Short answer: an AI chatbot may receive everything a child types, says, uploads or allows the app to infer, then retain, analyse, share or use some of it according to the service’s policy and the law in the child’s location. No single privacy rule or default applies to every chatbot. Parents should verify the specific service’s age rules, data uses, retention period, sharing, security and deletion controls before allowing use.
What data can an AI chatbot receive from a child?
A chatbot conversation is not limited to the visible text in a chat window. Depending on the product and settings, the service can process:
- Account information: name, email address, date of birth, account identifiers and parent or school details.
- Conversation content: typed prompts, the chatbot’s replies, corrections, files, photographs and screenshots.
- Audio and video: voice recordings or camera images when a child uses speech, image or video features.
- Device and usage data: IP address, browser or device identifiers, timestamps, diagnostics and interaction history.
- Location: precise or approximate location if the app requests it or derives it from the device or network.
- Inferred information: likely age, interests, preferences, emotional state or other profiles generated from activity.
A child can also volunteer sensitive information without being asked. That may include a school name, home address, medical concern, family problem, password, photograph or details about a friend. Once included in a prompt, the information can be copied into conversation history, safety logs, support systems or a personalisation feature, depending on the provider.
What happens to chats after the chatbot replies?
Most services perform several separate operations, and their privacy policy should describe each one. The chatbot first processes the prompt to generate an answer. The same content may then be used to provide conversation history, remember preferences, detect abuse, debug the service, respond to a support request, improve models, or measure engagement. A provider may use contractors or cloud infrastructure to perform some of those functions.

These purposes are not interchangeable. A service can say that it does not use chats to train a general model while still retaining them for security or keeping a separate memory profile. Turning off “chat history” may stop a visible transcript without deleting account records, safety logs or saved memories. Parents should ask what deletion covers, including backups and information already used to create an inference.
Can a chatbot use a child’s chats to train its AI?
Sometimes, but there is no universal answer. The policy may distinguish between consumer conversations, optional model-improvement settings, human review, safety monitoring and business or education accounts. Check the current policy and settings for the exact account type. Look for a plain statement about whether prompts and uploads are used to improve models, whether the setting is on by default, and how an opt-out applies to earlier conversations.
Can parents see or delete a child’s conversations?
That depends on the service, the account structure and local law. Some products provide a parent dashboard, while others provide only an account-holder request process. A deletion control may remove the visible history but not instantly erase backups or information that has already been de-identified or incorporated into system statistics. The provider should explain the scope and timing of deletion.

The same survey reported that users sought advice about physical health (33%), feelings or challenges (22%), and mental health or wellbeing (20%). These figures describe the surveyed population; they do not measure every child or prove that every provider collects the same information. They do show why privacy and safety cannot be separated: a child seeking emotional or health advice may reveal information that is especially sensitive.
What United States law requires under COPPA
The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to operators of commercial websites and online services directed to children under 13, and to operators with actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information from a child under 13. It is not a blanket rule for every service used by a teenager, and a service’s audience, knowledge and design matter.
For a covered service, the Federal Trade Commission says the operator generally must give parents direct notice and obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using or disclosing a child’s personal information, subject to the rule’s provisions and exceptions. The FTC states: “COPPA requires that you give parents ‘direct notice’ of your information practices before collecting information from their kids.”

Retention, security and deletion
COPPA does not allow indefinite retention simply because storage is convenient. The FTC says, “You cannot retain personal information collected from a child indefinitely.” A covered operator needs a written retention and deletion policy tied to the purpose for which the information was collected, plus reasonable security measures. Ask the provider for the actual retention period and whether deletion reaches stored memories, support records and backups.
The February 2026 age-verification statement
In February 2026, the FTC described a limited enforcement policy for certain age-verification data collected by general-audience and mixed-audience services. The conditions include using the information only to determine age, giving notice, applying reasonable safeguards, restricting disclosure and deleting the data promptly. This narrow statement is not a general exemption from COPPA and does not permit a service to keep age-check information indefinitely or use it for unrelated profiling.
What the UK Children’s Code expects
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) Children’s Code is a statutory code of practice explaining how data-protection law applies to online services likely to be accessed by children. It contains 15 standards. It is not a new law that bans every design choice, but regulators and organisations must take its expectations seriously when designing or assessing services.

- Data minimisation: collect and retain only the personal data needed for the stated purpose.
- Restricted sharing: children’s data should not usually be shared, and any sharing should have a clear justification.
- Geolocation off by default: location should not be active unless the service can justify it and explain it clearly.
- No manipulative nudges: design should not pressure children to reveal unnecessary information or weaken privacy settings.
For a chatbot, these principles affect optional memory, voice recording, location requests, advertising identifiers and prompts that encourage a child to disclose more than is needed.

What European Union guidance and proposals say
European Commission guidance under the Digital Services Act says platforms accessible to minors should assess risks created by AI features. It recommends that such features are not activated automatically, are easy to turn off and are not promoted or nudged to children. A visible, child-friendly warning should explain that the interaction is with an AI system rather than a person and that its answers can be inaccurate or misleading.
The Commission’s KIDS Act FAQ describes a proposal, not enacted law. The proposal would add requirements for services including chatbot and companion features. Described measures include limiting designs that simulate human relationships in ways likely to create emotional dependency, preventing earlier conversations from carrying forward by default, requiring pre-launch risk testing and post-launch monitoring, and requiring parental-control tools for children under 13. Treat these as proposed obligations until the legislative process makes them law.
A parent’s privacy check before allowing use
Use the service’s current privacy policy, age information and in-app controls together. Marketing pages rarely answer every question.
- Confirm the age route. Record the stated minimum age, how age is checked, whether the service is child-directed or general-audience, and whether a parent notice or verifiable-consent flow is required in your country.
- List every input. Check whether the service receives prompts, voice, images, files, contacts, location, device identifiers or inferred information. Disable optional permissions that are not needed.
- Trace each purpose. Find separate explanations for generating replies, personalisation or memory, model improvement, moderation, analytics, advertising and customer support.
- Inspect sharing. Identify categories of service providers and other third parties, why information is shared, and what safeguards are described.
- Check retention. Find the default history and memory behaviour, the stated retention duration and whether inactive accounts are eventually deleted.
- Test deletion and access. Locate the parent or user process to review, export or delete information. Ask whether deletion covers saved memories, attachments, backups and prior support tickets.
- Set protective defaults. Turn off chat history, memory, personalisation, location and optional AI features when they are not necessary. Keep features off unless the child understands the trade-off.
- Read the child-facing explanation. The warning should be understandable to the child, state that the system is not human, and explain that answers may be wrong.
- Agree on disclosure rules. Tell the child never to enter passwords, exact addresses, school schedules, financial details, private medical records or another person’s confidential information.
- Review periodically. Policies, model-training settings, age limits and controls can change. Recheck them after major app updates or at least when the child’s account or device changes.

- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Age and consent | What minimum age is stated? How is age checked? Is parent notice or verifiable consent provided? |
| Collection and purpose | Which categories are collected? Are conversations used for model improvement, personalisation, advertising, moderation or another purpose? |
| Retention and control | Is history or memory on by default? How long is data kept? Can a parent review and delete it? |
| Sharing and security | Which third-party categories receive data, for what purposes, and what safeguards are stated? |
| Child-facing design | Are privacy settings protective by default? Are AI limitations explained? Can the child turn features off easily? |
If a policy uses vague wording such as “may use information to improve services,” treat that as unresolved until the provider explains whether prompts are included, whether human reviewers can see them and whether an opt-out exists.
Privacy is only one child-safety issue
Personal-data controls do not prevent every harmful interaction. A chatbot can produce unsafe advice, encourage emotional dependence or expose a child to inappropriate material even when the provider follows its retention policy. The eSafety survey’s 20% report of potentially inappropriate or harmful interactions illustrates why supervision, reporting tools and age-appropriate design matter alongside deletion and consent.
UNICEF’s June 2026 policy brief compared regulatory approaches in six jurisdictions as of May 2026 and identified child-rights risks in chatbot and companion products. Its business recommendations reflect international best practice, not a compliance checklist for a particular country. In September 2025, the FTC opened a Section 6(b) inquiry into seven consumer-facing chatbot companies, seeking information about testing and monitoring for effects on children, restrictions, data practices, conversation processing, sharing and engagement monetisation. An inquiry is a request for information, not a finding that a company violated the law.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPractical answers to common parent questions
Is it safe for my child to share personal information?
The safest rule is to avoid sharing information that would cause harm if copied, reviewed or exposed. Use fictional examples for homework and role-play. If a child has already disclosed sensitive information, delete the conversation if possible, change any exposed credentials, review connected accounts and use the provider’s parent or privacy request process.
Does turning off chat history make the conversation private?
Not necessarily. It may remove the visible transcript or stop a history feature while the service still keeps short-term logs for security, abuse prevention or technical operations. Read the policy’s retention and deletion sections and ask what happens to backups and memories.
Do parental controls guarantee compliance?
No. Controls can reduce exposure but cannot replace the provider’s legal duties or a child’s judgment. Combine age-appropriate settings with clear household rules, periodic policy checks and a way for the child to report a disturbing response.
