AI-assisted scientific discovery and a traditional literature review are not competing versions of the same task. Discovery can span literature research, data analysis, hypothesis formation and experimental work; a literature review is a method for finding and synthesizing prior research. AI can support parts of a review, but using an AI tool does not by itself make a review systematic, reliable or complete.
They cover different parts of the research process
The key distinction is scope. AI-assisted scientific discovery is a broad label for using AI across research activities. A 2026 review describes a six-module research paradigm encompassing literature research, data analysis, hypothesis formulation, experimental execution, report generation and autonomous evolution. That description presents a possible lifecycle framework; it does not establish that a single system can perform every module reliably or independently.
A literature review has a narrower purpose: organize the search for relevant published work, extract information from it and present a synthesis. A systematic literature review is a method for carrying out those activities in an organized way. It is not simply a search box, an AI feature or a particular software product. Its quality depends on the process and evidence, not on whether a tool is labeled AI-powered.

What AI can contribute to a literature review
AI-assisted review tools are a heterogeneous category, not one standardized workflow. A 2023 survey in Computing, Artificial intelligence to automate the systematic review of scientific literature, described 34 primary studies across different review tasks, algorithms, tools and ways humans participate. That variety matters: results or capabilities associated with one task or tool should not be generalized to every review, discipline or evidence base.
Study selection, extraction and composition
One empirical comparison surfaced in the literature examined AI tools against PRISMA-based reviews in glaucoma. Its comparison covered study selection, data extraction and study composition. Those are distinct stages: selecting studies concerns which publications enter a review; extraction concerns what information is taken from them; composition concerns how findings are assembled into the review. The available record does not provide enough outcome detail to establish comparative accuracy, recall, time savings or error rates.
These stages also have different consequences when something goes wrong. A missed or incorrectly excluded study can change which evidence is represented. An extraction error can misstate an included paper’s findings or characteristics. Weakly supported composition can make a synthesis appear more certain than its underlying sources justify. Therefore, a tool’s performance at one stage cannot stand in for the quality of the entire review.

Automation does not settle the review question
Automation may assist with parts of finding, screening, extracting or organizing research, but it does not determine whether the review question is well framed, whether the selected evidence is appropriate, or whether the interpretation is warranted. Those are judgments about scope and evidence. A tool can make a task easier to carry out without proving that the task was carried out correctly.
That distinction is especially important for systematic reviews. The method requires an organized process for finding relevant papers, extracting information and presenting findings. AI may participate in steps within that process, but the review still needs a defensible account of what was done and how its conclusions follow from the evidence. Automation is a means; it is not a quality guarantee.
How the approaches compare in practice
The table compares broad workflow characteristics, not measured performance. There is no single AI system or single traditional-review workflow represented by these categories. The 2024 tool review and the 2023 survey describe a varied landscape, while the available glaucoma comparison does not provide enough outcome estimates for a universal winner.

Why feature counts do not prove that AI improves reviews
In a 2024 article in Artificial Intelligence Review, Francisco Bolaños, Angelo Salatino, Francesco Osborne and colleagues assessed 21 leading systematic-literature-review tools using a framework of 23 traditional features and 11 AI features. These are counts describing the review’s scope and assessment framework. They are not a measure of how well each feature works, proof that every product implements each feature, or evidence that AI features improve review outcomes.
Feature inventories answer a different question from performance evaluations. A tool may offer a feature, but that fact alone does not show that it reduces missed studies, improves extraction accuracy, makes a synthesis more faithful or saves a measurable amount of time. To make such a claim, a comparison needs to identify the tool, task, discipline, dataset, comparator and measured outcome. The available findings do not provide those details across the field.
How to choose an approach for a research question
Start with the work you need to complete, not with the broad label “AI-assisted.” If the main goal is to synthesize prior studies, the relevant choice is how to conduct the review and whether a tool can assist a defined task within that process. If the goal also includes analyzing scientific data, generating hypotheses or supporting experiments, the work extends beyond literature review and belongs to the broader discovery landscape.

- Define the output. Decide whether the intended result is a synthesis of published evidence or a broader research activity that also involves data analysis, hypotheses or experimental work.
- Break the work into stages. For a review, identify the relevant activities, such as finding papers, selecting studies, extracting information and composing findings. For discovery beyond reviewing, specify the additional research stages involved.
- Assign a testable role to any AI tool. State which task it will assist rather than treating “AI” as a method. Keep the proposed contribution narrow enough that its output can be checked against the evidence and the intended task.
- Set an evaluation before relying on results. Identify what would count as a correct or useful result for that stage. Do not infer end-to-end review quality from a tool’s performance on one component.
- Retain a verifiable account of the work. Make the process and the basis for conclusions transparent enough for readers or collaborators to understand how evidence was handled. This is particularly important when AI contributes to a scientific claim.
- Use the findings to decide the tool’s role. If the tool’s contribution cannot be evaluated adequately for the task, do not treat its output as a substitute for a defensible review or scientific judgment.
This is a decision framework, not a claim that every review follows identical steps or that a particular tool has been validated. The appropriate evaluation depends on the research question and task. A screening aid, an extraction aid and a system proposing scientific hypotheses need not be judged by the same criteria.

“Which is better?” has no well-defined answer until “better” is tied to a task and outcome. Comparing AI-assisted scientific discovery as a whole with traditional literature reviewing mixes activities with different goals. A fair test would compare like with like: for example, a specified tool’s study-selection results against a specified review process, using a defined body of evidence and an explicit measure of performance.

A result for one stage does not establish performance at the others.
- Tool and comparator: Name the AI system and the conventional method or human process it is compared with. “AI” and “traditional” are too broad to identify a reproducible comparison.
- Discipline and evidence set: Specify the scientific field and material evaluated. The available survey describes varied tasks and tools, not a universal benchmark applicable to every field.
- Outcome: Report the particular measure, such as accuracy, recall, time or error rate, only when the study actually provides it. The surfaced 2025 glaucoma comparison does not provide enough detail here to support claims on those measures.
- Verification: Explain how results and conclusions were checked. Reviews of AI-supported literature work and AI-driven discovery both identify evaluation or verification as important concerns.
- Workflow fit: Consider whether a tool integrates usefully into the research process. The 2024 review identifies usability and integration among the challenges, separate from whether an algorithm can perform a narrow task.
This framework prevents a frequent category error: treating breadth of potential application as proof of effectiveness. A discovery system may cover more stages than a review method, but greater scope is not itself evidence of better results. Conversely, a traditional review is not automatically stronger merely because it is not described as AI-assisted. The relevant question is whether the particular approach produces trustworthy, appropriately verified work for the task at hand.

What the current evidence can and cannot establish
The publications summarized here establish that AI support for literature reviews spans multiple tasks and approaches, and that researchers have assessed tool features as well as surveyed primary studies. They also identify integration, usability, standardized evaluation and transparent verification as important challenges. Together, these findings support a careful, stage-by-stage comparison rather than a verdict about AI versus human research in general.
They do not establish that AI-assisted discovery is universally faster, more complete or more accurate than traditional literature reviews. The 2025 glaucoma comparison is a specific comparison in a specific clinical area, but the available record lacks the detailed outcomes needed to infer those advantages or disadvantages. Nor is there a head-to-head comparison covering all forms of discovery and all review methods. Any broader superiority claim would exceed what these findings show.
For readers deciding how to approach a project, the practical distinction is straightforward: use “scientific discovery” for the wider research lifecycle and “literature review” for the organized work of finding and synthesizing prior studies. AI can be part of either, but its contribution needs to be defined and evaluated at the stage where it is used.
