A wearable AI agent can handle some tasks on the device, but “without your phone” usually means you can interact hands-free—not that the wearable was set up without a phone, has its own internet connection, or can run every AI feature offline. The system may combine the wearable’s sensors and software with a paired phone, a network connection, cloud AI, and connected services. Which parts work independently depends on the device and feature.

What makes a wearable an AI agent?

A wearable agent is not simply an AI model hidden in glasses or a watch. It is a system that gathers context, processes a request, and returns an action or response. Depending on the task, those stages can happen on the wearable, through a phone, or in the cloud.

  • Inputs: A microphone can capture speech; a camera can provide visual context; motion sensors can register movement; touch or gestures can serve as commands.
  • Processing: Device software can handle some actions locally. More demanding AI work may require a cloud model or connected service.
  • Outputs: The wearable may respond through audio, notifications, short text, or an in-lens display.

Meta’s Device Access Toolkit documentation describes camera, speech and audio, motion, display, and gesture capabilities for compatible glasses. Those capabilities do not establish that every wearable continuously records or perceives its surroundings; behavior depends on the device and mode.

What does “without your phone” actually mean?

There are three different kinds of independence, and a device may have one without the others.

  • Hands-free interaction: You can speak, gesture, or glance at information without taking out your phone.
  • Phone-independent operation: The wearable can perform a particular task without relying on the phone at that moment. It may still have needed a phone for setup, permissions, or a capability such as location.
  • Offline operation: The wearable can perform a task without an internet connection. This may cover cached content or simple local functions, but not necessarily fresh information or cloud AI.

Meta’s Ray-Ban Display Web Apps illustrate why the distinction matters. Meta says these apps run directly on the glasses without the companion app, but its glasses require the Meta AI app for pairing. The Web Apps can use glasses Wi-Fi or a phone tether for API calls, cache some work for offline use, and receive location from the paired phone with permission. A standalone app runtime therefore does not mean every feature is phone-free or offline.

Where does the processing happen?

On the wearable

Local processing can support basic, latency-sensitive, or device-control actions without sending every task to a cloud model. Meta Engineering says actions such as placing a call or answering a text can happen entirely on-device. Meta also says its Neural Band translates wrist-muscle activity into digital commands locally. That is an example of local gesture classification, not evidence that the AI model behind every glasses feature is also local.

Through a paired phone

A phone can pair the wearable, grant permissions, connect it to apps, or supply a capability such as location. This is distinct from where the AI model runs: a wearable can process one task locally while relying on the phone for another part of its operation.

In the cloud

Meta says some advanced features require models too large to fit in its glasses and therefore run in the cloud. Cloud-backed functions need a working connection to the service, through device Wi-Fi, a phone tether, or another available connection. Meta describes its Private Processing design as running AI models inside confidential virtual machines. That is Meta’s account of its architecture, not an independent audit, and it does not establish that every AI request uses that design.

What can a wearable AI agent do when it has no connection?

Offline behavior is feature-specific. A wearable app may show cached content or handle a local command while a request for new information, a live API result, or cloud inference is unavailable. Meta’s Web Apps documentation supports both API calls over Wi-Fi or phone tether and service-worker/Cache API support for offline behavior; it does not mean cloud AI or fresh online data remain available without a connection.

Before relying on an offline feature, check whether it needs a network, a paired phone, or location permission. Also check what the app caches: a saved screen or previously downloaded item is not the same as a live answer.

How an AI wearable takes input and responds

Wearables can combine several input and output methods. Voice is useful when hands are occupied; touch or gestures can issue a discreet command; a camera may supply visual context when the feature calls for it. Responses may arrive as spoken audio, a notification, brief text, or a display.

Meta’s Neural Band uses electromyography (EMG): it classifies wrist muscle activity into digital commands, with Meta saying that this translation happens locally. Meta reported nearly 200,000 research participants in its surface-EMG work in 2025; that is a company-reported research figure, not a measure of product accuracy or a comparison with other devices.

What Meta says its Ray-Ban Display system can do

Meta’s September 17, 2025 product announcement describes Ray-Ban Display glasses showing messages, photo previews, translations, and Meta AI help without requiring the wearer to pull out a phone. The company says the display is “isn’t on all the time — it’s designed for short interactions that you’re always in control of.” That is product-positioning language; it should not be read as a general description of every wearable display.

Meta published these figures for the products in that announcement. They are company specifications, not independent battery tests:

Product or claim Published figure Qualification
Ray-Ban Display battery Up to 6 hours Meta’s 2025 mixed-use battery-life specification.
Ray-Ban Display with charging case Up to 30 hours total Meta’s 2025 specification, including the charging case.
Neural Band battery Up to 18 hours Meta’s 2025 specification.
Neural Band water rating IPX7 As stated by Meta in 2025.

What happens if the network or service disappears?

A wearable that relies on a vendor’s cloud service can lose core features if that service becomes unavailable or shuts down. A Humane Ai Pin support FAQ search-result excerpt says cloud-dependent voice interactions and AI responses were not included after February 28, 2025, while offline functions such as checking battery level remained. The official page could not be opened to verify that text, so treat the excerpt as an illustration of the risk, not independently confirmed documentation.

When assessing a device, look for a feature-by-feature account of what runs on the wearable, what needs a phone or network, what remains available offline, and what depends on the vendor’s service. Also check whether pairing, location permissions, battery life, or an accessory changes the answer.

How to judge a wearable’s phone independence

  • Pairing: Is a companion app required for initial setup or ongoing use?
  • Processing: Which actions run on-device, and which require cloud AI?
  • Connection: Can the wearable use Wi-Fi or cellular service directly, or does it need a phone tether?
  • Offline behavior: What works without a connection, and is it cached content or fresh processing?
  • Permissions and context: Does a feature need phone-provided location, app access, or another permission?
  • Service continuity: Which functions stop working if the vendor’s cloud service ends?
  • Privacy controls: What does the vendor say is processed locally, and what is sent elsewhere? Treat vendor statements as claims about its design, not blanket proof of privacy.
