Yes—an AI agent can use Bitcoin without ever holding your seed phrase. The safe design is to let the agent create addresses, invoices and unsigned transactions while a separate signing boundary controls every spend. A hardware signer, multisignature wallet or vault policy keeps private keys away from the agent. Give the agent only a small, replenishable spending balance for routine payments; route withdrawals, policy changes and unusual transactions to human approval.
Control is defined by the signing key. Wallet software can calculate fees, construct a transaction and broadcast it, but whoever can produce the valid signature can spend the coins. Your architecture should therefore make the agent useful without giving it unilateral signing authority.
What “control” means in an AI Bitcoin wallet
Bitcoin ownership is enforced by cryptographic signatures, not by the application that displays your balance. An agent may know addresses, transaction history and invoice details, yet still be unable to spend if it cannot access the private keys.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A hardware wallet keeps keys on a dedicated device. A networked wallet prepares the transaction and sends it to the device; the device displays the destination, amount, fee and change, then returns a signature only after approval. The signed transaction can go back to the networked wallet for broadcast. The seed never needs to enter the agent’s runtime, server, prompt, logs or database.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The same principle applies to multisignature and vault designs. The agent can prepare a spend, but the required key threshold, delay or recovery rule remains outside its control. If an agent is compromised, the attacker’s maximum loss is limited to whatever authority and balance you deliberately assigned.
A practical architecture: separate the agent from savings
1. Agent runtime
Run the model and its tools in an environment that has no seed phrase and no unrestricted signing API. It may query balances, derive receive addresses, create Lightning invoices, estimate fees and build unsigned Bitcoin transactions or PSBTs. Store credentials for read-only access separately from credentials that can initiate payments.
2. Spending wallet
Create a dedicated hot wallet or Lightning wallet for routine machine payments. Set an explicit balance ceiling and define allowed destinations, maximum amount, payment frequency and operating hours. Refill this wallet manually or through a policy-controlled transfer from treasury custody. Do not let the agent decide its own limit or refill path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Approval boundary
Withdrawals, new recipients, policy changes, unusually high fees and transfers above the routine limit should stop at a hardware signer or multisignature workflow. The secure signer screen—not the agent’s message, web dashboard or host computer—is the source of truth for what will be signed.
4. Treasury custody
Keep long-term holdings in hardware-backed single-signature storage, multisignature storage or a vault-style policy. Fund the spending wallet only with the liquidity it needs. Test restoration and emergency procedures with small amounts before moving material value.

5. Monitoring
Alert on balance changes, failed payments, repeated invoice attempts, new recipients, fee spikes and wallet-policy registration changes. Monitoring does not replace signing controls, but it shortens the time between a compromise and intervention.
When to use Lightning and when to use on-chain Bitcoin
Lightning is generally the practical default for frequent, low-value agent payments. Invoices and payments are exposed through APIs, so an agent can pay for an API call or service without waiting for on-chain confirmations. A bounded Lightning balance also makes the financial blast radius easy to define.
On-chain Bitcoin remains useful for larger settlement, treasury rebalancing and moving funds into or out of secured storage. Confirmation delays, changing fees and address verification make it less convenient for every small machine payment, but those same pauses provide useful review points for high-value transfers.
| Use case | Lightning | On-chain Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| Typical agent activity | Frequent, small invoices and immediate service payments | Occasional settlement, treasury transfers and rebalancing |
| What the agent can call | Invoice creation, invoice decoding and payment APIs | Address derivation, fee estimation, PSBT construction and broadcast |
| Operational requirements | Liquidity, channel management, backups and high availability for a self-hosted node | Fee management, confirmation monitoring and secure key backups |
| Custody trade-off | Self-hosting preserves custody; a hosted wallet reduces operations but adds provider and counterparty dependence | Hardware or multisignature custody can keep signing authority offline |
| Best policy boundary | Small capped balance with rate and amount limits | Hardware approval or multiple signers for withdrawals and policy changes |
A self-custodial Lightning node avoids handing funds to a hosted provider, but you must maintain uptime, channel liquidity, backups and recovery of channel state. A hosted service is simpler, yet you are trusting that provider with some combination of custody, availability and payment execution.
How to give an agent a controlled Lightning budget
- Create a separate wallet or account. Do not connect the agent to the wallet that stores savings. Use a wallet whose maximum balance is acceptable to lose if the agent and its host are compromised.
- Define policy outside the model. Enforce maximum amount per payment, cumulative amount per hour or day, approved invoice types, recipient or domain rules and an expiry window. Put these checks in deterministic code, not in a prompt the model can ignore.
- Require a fresh invoice. Before paying, decode the invoice immediately, verify the amount, destination identity, expiry and description, and reject invoices that changed after approval. Never let the agent reuse an old invoice merely because it appears in conversation history.
- Use a refill boundary. Move only a defined amount from treasury custody to the spending wallet. A refill should require a separate policy check or human approval, especially when it would restore the wallet to its ceiling.
- Log and alert. Record invoice hash, amount, timestamp, result and policy decision. Alert on repeated failures, unusual destinations, rapid retries and spending near the cap.
- Sweep excess liquidity. Periodically return funds above the operating reserve to hardware-backed treasury storage. A capped balance limits exposure even if monitoring fails.
How hardware approval prevents unilateral spending
Bitcoin developer documentation describes a straightforward flow: a networked wallet prepares transaction details, a hardware device shows them to the user, the user approves, and the device returns the signed transaction for broadcast. The agent can automate preparation, but it cannot cross the signing boundary by itself.

Approval is meaningful only when the signer can show the complete policy and transaction. BIP-388 states: “Regardless of the approach, the ability for the user to carefully verify all the details of the spending policies using the hardware signer’s screen is a prerequisite for security in adversarial environments.” Policy registration prevents a malicious client from substituting a different wallet policy later.

Treat a host computer, browser extension or agent-generated summary as untrusted display material. If the device cannot show the information needed to verify the spend, stop and use a workflow that can.
Why wallet-policy verification matters
A transaction can look ordinary while being built from a different derivation path, script policy or set of keys than you intended. BIP-129’s multisignature setup requirements similarly call for signers to display the first address and policy parameters—including the M-of-N threshold and derivation restrictions—for confirmation. Each signer should independently confirm those details during setup, not only when funds are later spent.
Record the approved descriptor or policy, signer fingerprints, derivation restrictions and recovery instructions. Compare a newly generated receive address against the registered policy before funding it. A policy-registration change is a high-priority alert because it can redirect future deposits or alter who is able to spend.
Multisignature and vault options
| Design | Agent authority | Human approval | Recovery and burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate hot or Lightning wallet | Can spend only the capped balance and permitted destinations | Required for refills or exceptions | Simple operations; the hot-wallet balance is the main exposure |
| Hardware-backed single signature | Builds unsigned transactions but cannot sign | One hardware approval per protected spend | Lower coordination burden; protect and back up the device and seed |
| M-of-N multisignature | Prepares transactions; cannot meet the signer threshold | Two or more independent signers, according to policy | Distributes key risk; requires signer coordination and descriptor backups |
| Vault-style policy | May propose a withdrawal, but a delay and recovery path constrain execution | Approval plus monitoring during the delay | Can interrupt a detected compromise; more complex tooling and recovery testing |
BIP-345’s OP_VAULT proposal describes time-delayed and recovery spending paths intended to reduce losses after key compromise. One example is a 2-of-3 multisignature arrangement using devices from different manufacturers, so a single device failure or compromise does not automatically grant control. Bitcoin.org guidance likewise treats multisignature as appropriate when only the user can spend without another party’s permission.

Choose the least complex design that meets your threat model. Multisig is not automatically safer if you lose the descriptors, forget signer locations or cannot coordinate enough keys. A vault delay is useful only if someone monitors the pending withdrawal and knows how to trigger recovery.
Guardrails that should not depend on an AI model
- Keep agent permissions narrower than the wallet owner’s permissions.
- Enforce amount, recipient, rate and time-window limits in code or an independent policy service.
- Require fresh invoice or transaction verification immediately before signing.
- Display and verify change addresses and fees on the hardware device.
- Separate payment liquidity from savings and sweep excess funds to treasury custody.
- Use allowlists for known services, while sending new recipients to manual review.
- Require a second person or signer for policy changes, large withdrawals and emergency refills.
- Maintain tested backups of seeds, descriptors, PSBTs and Lightning channel state where applicable.
- Keep the agent’s host isolated from seed backups and hardware-device recovery material.
Recovery and incident response
If the agent behaves suspiciously
Disable payment credentials and network access for the agent, stop refills, and preserve logs, unsigned transactions and invoice records. If funds remain in a hot or Lightning wallet, move them through a preplanned, independently verified path to protected custody. Do not approve a hurried transaction from an unfamiliar screen.
If a key or device may be compromised
Use the recovery procedure you tested before funding the wallet. For multisig, remove the suspected signer from future policies and spend with the remaining threshold if the policy permits. For a vault design, use the recovery path during the delay window. Rotate credentials and re-register the wallet policy only after verifying descriptors and addresses on trusted devices.
If a device is lost
A lost hardware device should not be an emergency if the seed backup, descriptors and signer threshold are intact. Restore on a replacement device, verify the first address and policy parameters, and perform a small test transaction before resuming normal operation.

“The agent needs the seed to automate payments.”
It does not. Let it create invoices or unsigned transactions and pass sensitive spends to a signer. If a service insists on unrestricted key access, treat that integration as a deliberate custody trade-off rather than a requirement of Bitcoin.

“The hardware screen shows a different address.”
Stop. Check the registered descriptor, network, derivation path and change output. Never approve a transaction that you cannot reconcile with the intended policy.
“Lightning payments fail even though the balance is sufficient.”
Investigate node uptime, channel liquidity, route availability, invoice expiry and backup state. A self-hosted node needs operational capacity, not just coins in an account. Keep an on-chain settlement path for rebalancing and recovery.
“The spending cap was reached, so the agent created a new wallet.”
This indicates a policy failure. Prevent automatic wallet creation and require the policy service to reject unknown accounts, new recipients and unapproved derivation paths. A cap that can be bypassed by changing accounts is not a real cap.
Minimum setup checklist
- Separate agent wallet from treasury funds.
- No seed phrase or private-key material in the agent environment.
- Deterministic amount, recipient, rate and time limits enforced outside the model.
- Hardware display verification for protected transactions and wallet policy.
- Multisig or vault recovery path for higher-value treasury holdings.
- Fresh invoice checks and transaction review immediately before signing.
- Monitoring for payments, refills, policy changes and failed attempts.
- Documented, tested restoration of seeds, descriptors, PSBTs and Lightning state.
The resulting division of labor is clear: the agent handles computation and communication; policy code limits what it may request; the signer controls what can actually spend; and treasury procedures determine how much value is exposed. That is how you obtain useful automated Bitcoin payments without turning an AI process into the owner of your funds.
