AI agents can help with month-end close by monitoring task and transaction status, matching records, identifying exceptions and variances, and preparing draft work for finance staff to review. They should not be treated as unsupervised accountants: define what an agent may read or change, which actions need approval, and how its work will be recorded. Keep people accountable for exceptions, significant accounting judgments, and control decisions.
There is no independent, comparable evidence in the sources cited here that AI agents consistently shorten close cycles or improve accuracy across organizations. Treat product capabilities as vendor or professional-services claims, and evaluate results in your own systems and control environment.
What an AI agent can do during close
Month-end close is a coordinated set of accounting tasks: teams need to complete recurring work, reconcile accounts, investigate differences, prepare entries and supporting analysis, and confirm that reviews and approvals are finished. An AI agent can assist with parts of that work by monitoring information across systems and preparing or routing tasks. The exact scope depends on the product and the permissions an organization grants it.

It is useful to separate assistance from authority. An agent might identify a mismatch and assemble the records a reviewer needs without being allowed to resolve the mismatch or post an entry. Another system may allow an organization to configure more autonomy for selected actions. Those are different control models, not evidence that all close agents behave alike.

KPMG describes an exception-oriented approach in which agents monitor transactions, flag accounting exceptions, and prepare draft entries rather than waiting for all work to begin in a period-end sprint. This is a description of KPMG’s approach, not a universal guarantee about close software. [KPMG’s account of its close approach]
Where agents fit in the close workflow
1. Monitor tasks and transaction activity
A close agent or associated automation layer can surface task status and transaction activity so a team can see what is complete, what is pending, and where work may need attention. Sage describes task tracking, notifications, and real-time progress visibility for its close automation offering. These features can make status easier to monitor; they do not, by themselves, establish that the underlying accounting work is correct or complete. [Sage Intacct Close Automation]
2. Match records and support reconciliations
Matching is a practical candidate for automation when the inputs, matching rules, and expected treatment of exceptions are well defined. KPMG describes transaction matching; SAP describes transactional-level matching and reconciliation; Sage describes reconciliation reports and guided investigation. When records do not match, the useful next step is not to force a match. The workflow should preserve the difference, make the relevant records available, and route the case for investigation under the organization’s policy. A reviewer needs enough context to decide whether the mismatch is a timing item, a data problem, an expected reconciling item, or an issue that requires correction.

3. Surface variances and potential anomalies
Variance analysis can help a reviewer focus on items that depart from an expected pattern or threshold. Sage says its offering includes automated variance analysis, while KPMG describes escalating exceptions and variances. Such alerts are prompts to investigate, not accounting conclusions: thresholds and escalation rules need to be appropriate to the account, entity, and policy being applied. [Sage] [KPMG]
4. Prepare draft entries and supporting work
An agent may assemble a proposed entry, report, or analysis for a person to inspect. KPMG describes preparation of draft entries. SAP says organizations can control the Financial Closing Assistant’s level of autonomy, including for journal posting, clearing, and analysis. That configurability should not be read as a recommendation to enable posting: define permitted actions and approvals for each workflow before granting access. [KPMG] [SAP]
5. Escalate exceptions and obtain approval
Policy exceptions, unusual variances, and complex judgments should reach a designated finance professional with the records and rationale needed for review. KPMG describes human validation, thresholds, and segregation of duties in its exception-first approach. Sage says its Close agent does not post entries or make changes without approval. These are different descriptions of particular offerings; they do not establish a default autonomy model for other products. [KPMG] [Sage]
6. Retain evidence of what happened
A close is not controlled just because an agent returned a structured response. Preserve enough information for a reviewer to reconstruct what the agent saw, what it proposed or did, and who approved or rejected the result. KPMG’s 2026 board oversight paper calls for AI actions to be recorded, traceable, explainable, and available for review, along with documented testing and clear accountability. How agents work with ERP and finance systems
An agent does not replace the systems that hold accounting records or define the organization’s close process. In an implementation, the key questions are which systems it can access, what data it can read, whether it can change records, and which application remains the system of record. A tool layered over existing systems, an ERP-associated assistant, and specialist workflow software can have different integration and authority boundaries.
Before connecting an agent, map its access to each relevant system and record. Distinguish read access from write access, and distinguish preparing a proposed action from executing it. Make clear where approval occurs and where evidence of that approval is retained. A connection that can retrieve data is not automatically a safe or complete integration for posting, clearing, or changing accounting records.
KPMG says its close command-center approach layers over existing ERPs and describes more than 200 pre-built cloud connectors. That is a KPMG-published description; organizations should verify connector coverage, permissions, and implementation requirements for their own systems. Implementation approaches to compare
Three patterns appear in the product and service descriptions below. They are categories for evaluation, not a neutral ranking or a head-to-head test. The sources do not establish comparative performance, verified pricing, or which option is best for a particular organization.

Finacode describes multi-ERP workflows and publishes its own assurance statements. Its website displays figures such as “230+” chains reconciled and “1,000+” data sources, and says SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type I are attested, with Type II in progress. These are vendor-published product and assurance statements, not independent close-outcome measures; verify their current status and scope directly. [Finacode]
For any approach, ask the provider to demonstrate the actual workflow with representative data and exceptions, not only a successful standard case. Confirm how access is provisioned and revoked, what is logged, how failures are surfaced, and whether the organization can retain the supporting records it needs. Check availability and terms with the provider: the cited descriptions do not establish current pricing, geography, licensing, or deployment details for every organization.

Start with a narrow, repeatable task whose inputs, expected outputs, and escalation rules can be documented. Do not begin by granting broad authority across the close. Write down the boundaries for the workflow and assign an accountable owner before enabling it.
- Define access: List the systems, records, and data the agent may read, and separately list any changes it is permitted to make.
- Set approval rules: Identify actions that require a named approver, including any posting or clearing authority, and establish how approval is captured.
- Set thresholds and escalation paths: Specify which mismatches, variances, or policy exceptions must be routed to a person and who receives each type of case.
- Preserve segregation of duties: Do not let the agent’s access or workflow collapse roles that policy requires to remain separate. Keep a person accountable for approval and control ownership.
- Keep reviewable evidence: Retain the input records, proposed action, decision, approval, and action log in a form that allows a reviewer to reconstruct the sequence.
- Test and document: Record how the workflow was tested, including how it handles exceptions and failures, and identify who is responsible for monitoring it.
KPMG’s 2026 board oversight paper says internal control over financial reporting (ICFR) should reflect AI use when it affects accounting judgment, transaction processing, or disclosure preparation. It also emphasizes traceable actions, documented testing, and clear accountability. It cautions that structured communication between agents alone is not a control. An organization should therefore assess the agent as part of the relevant accounting process and controls, rather than relying on a vendor’s description of the technology. How to run a useful pilot
A pilot should test whether the workflow fits the organization’s process and controls, not assume a productivity result in advance. Keep a human-reviewed baseline and compare the same type of work before and during the pilot. Agree on measures and definitions before starting so the team can distinguish volume, quality, review effort, and control outcomes.
- Choose one bounded workflow. Select recurring work with identifiable inputs, a documented expected result, and clear conditions for escalation.
- Document the current process. Record who performs and reviews the work, what evidence is retained, and how exceptions are handled.
- Configure limited permissions. Begin with the least authority needed to prepare or route the work. Add write or execution rights only if the control design, approvals, and testing support them.
- Test ordinary cases and exceptions. Include mismatches, missing information, and cases that should be escalated, not only routine examples.
- Compare against the baseline. Track reconciliations prepared, exception precision, rework, review time, posting errors, control exceptions, and close milestones using consistent definitions.
- Review before expanding. Have process owners and control owners decide whether the results and evidence support continued use, a change in scope, or stopping the workflow.
These measures are a practical way to evaluate a local pilot, not results established for any named product. A change in review time or close milestones during a pilot does not, by itself, prove that an agent caused the change; workload, data quality, policy, and other process changes can also matter.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The cited materials describe capabilities and implementation approaches, but they do not provide a neutral, directly comparable benchmark for close-agent performance. They do not establish a general reduction in close duration, improved accuracy, or guaranteed autonomous journal posting. Product features and assurance statements may change, so confirm current details and assess them against the organization’s own records, policies, and control requirements.

That distinction matters when deciding whether to deploy an agent. A product page can show what a provider says its software can do; only an organization-specific evaluation can establish whether a given workflow performs acceptably with that organization’s data and review controls. Keep claims about observed results tied to the specific pilot, time period, workflow, and measurement method that produced them.
