AI is likely to push some prices down over time by raising productivity, but it can also create inflationary pressure through investment, energy use, wealth effects and stronger demand. Its effect on jobs and pay is equally conditional: exposure means that AI can change tasks in an occupation, not that the occupation will disappear. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that almost 40% of global employment is exposed to AI and about 60% of jobs in advanced economies may be impacted. Those figures are scenario-based exposure estimates, not counts of jobs already lost.
Whether workers, consumers or owners of AI-related capital receive most of the gains depends on how quickly firms adopt the technology, whether AI complements or substitutes for particular tasks, how much workers can bargain for higher pay, and how widely productivity gains are shared.
What “AI exposure” actually means
An occupation is exposed when AI can perform, assist with or reorganize some of its tasks. Exposure does not forecast that the occupation will be eliminated. A lawyer may use AI to search documents while retaining responsibility for judgment; a nurse may spend less time on documentation; a software developer may produce code faster but still design systems and review results.

Automation is narrower: it occurs when a firm reduces the amount of human labor needed for a task. Augmentation occurs when AI raises a worker’s output and the worker remains necessary. The same occupation can contain both kinds of tasks, so outcomes can differ among people with the same job title.

This distinction explains why a high exposure estimate can coexist with little change in total employment. Some tasks are automated, new tasks and products are created, and demand may expand when prices fall or quality improves.
How AI can raise or lower inflation
The central comparison is the growth of productive supply against the growth of demand and costs. If AI lets firms produce more goods and services with the same resources, supply can grow faster than spending and reduce inflation pressure. If investment, wealth, energy use or demand grows faster than capacity, prices can rise instead.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook wrote on October 1, 2024 that AI productivity improvements “could help constrain unit labor costs and inflation in the long run.” She also emphasized on September 26, 2024 that the ultimate magnitude, affected workers and timing remained unknown. A Federal Reserve assessment from September 2026 therefore described near-term disinflation as modest and uncertain rather than assigning a single percentage effect.

The direction can differ by country, industry and phase of adoption. A period of heavy infrastructure investment may be inflationary even if later productivity gains become disinflationary.

What the employment estimates say
The IMF’s 2024 analysis estimates that almost 40% of global employment is exposed to AI. In advanced economies, about 60% of jobs may be impacted. Roughly half of exposed jobs in those economies could benefit from integration with AI, while the other half could face lower labor demand, lower wages or reduced hiring. These are modeled exposure categories, not observed job-loss totals.

Theoretical research expects broad occupational effects, but the IMF’s 2024 literature review found empirical evidence on aggregate employment and productivity still inconclusive. Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr’s February 2026 assessment likewise found little evidence that AI had yet produced a substantial aggregate employment or unemployment effect. He noted relative declines for early-career workers in highly exposed occupations, including software development and customer service. A decline for a particular age group or occupation is not evidence that total employment has fallen.
Why exposure is higher in some economies
Advanced economies employ more people in clerical, analytical and professional tasks that current AI systems can assist with. Lower-income economies may have less immediate exposure because employment is concentrated in physical or less codifiable work, but they can also face slower productivity gains if they lack reliable connectivity, capital, skills or institutions for adoption. Exposure and the ability to benefit are therefore separate questions.
How AI changes wages
AI affects pay through the value of the tasks a worker performs and through bargaining over the resulting gains. A worker whose judgment, customer relationships or technical expertise becomes more productive may produce more revenue and gain leverage for higher wages. A worker whose routine tasks are automated may see fewer available hours, weaker hiring or downward wage pressure.

Productivity does not automatically become wage growth. The distribution depends on who owns models, data, computing capacity and complementary capital; how concentrated markets are; and whether workers can move to expanding tasks or negotiate a share of gains. If capital returns rise faster than labor income, labor’s share can fall even while average output and income increase.
The IMF warns that labor-income inequality may increase when AI strongly complements high-income workers and raises returns to capital. OECD analysis likewise treats substitution, complementarity, labor share, worker mobility and market concentration as central to the wage question. An economy can record higher average income while many workers experience stagnant pay or difficult transitions.
Which workers are most exposed?
Exposure varies by task rather than by a simple “AI-proof” or “AI-vulnerable” label. Routine, codifiable activities are generally easier to automate. Work requiring physical presence, interpersonal trust, accountability, or complex real-world coordination may be more resistant to full automation, although AI can still change its supporting tasks.

IMF analysis finds women and college-educated workers more exposed on average. Greater exposure is not necessarily a disadvantage: these workers may also be better positioned to use AI, move into complementary tasks and capture productivity gains. Outcomes depend on access to training, organizational support and bargaining power.

Early-career workers can face a distinctive risk. Entry-level jobs often include routine tasks through which people learn an occupation. If those tasks are automated or hiring slows, new workers may have fewer opportunities to gain experience even when senior roles remain. Barr’s February 2026 observation about software development and customer service illustrates this transition risk without proving a permanent decline in those professions.

Short run: investment and adjustment
Firms first spend on models, data, hardware, electricity, integration and training. That spending can lift demand before measured productivity improves. Organizations also need to redesign workflows, set quality controls and decide which decisions require human review. Employment effects may therefore appear unevenly across firms and regions.
Medium run: reorganization and worker movement
As systems become reliable, firms may reduce some tasks, expand output, create new services or reassign workers. The speed of these changes depends on regulation, data quality, skills, management capacity and the cost of replacing existing systems. Workers who can move into complementary duties may benefit; others may need retraining or geographic and occupational mobility.

If productivity gains are sufficiently large, income levels could surge for most workers, as IMF authors noted in 2024. That outcome requires broad diffusion and sharing of gains. OECD expects stronger gains in knowledge-intensive services and advanced economies, while diffusion constraints can limit benefits elsewhere. Long-run results remain unsettled because adoption speed, market structure and policy choices are not fixed.

A five-part framework for judging any AI forecast

| Average or distribution? | How do results differ by occupation, education, age, gender, country and firm size? |
This framework prevents common errors such as treating an exposure percentage as a job-loss forecast or treating higher productivity as proof of higher wages. Any serious projection should state its geography, occupations, time period and model assumptions.
What to watch in economic data
- Productivity and unit labor costs: sustained productivity gains alongside slower unit labor-cost growth would support a disinflationary supply channel.
- Hiring and hours by occupation and age: these can reveal transition effects earlier than aggregate unemployment, especially for entry-level workers.
- Wage growth across the distribution: compare high- and low-exposure occupations rather than relying only on the average wage.
- Labor’s share and profit margins: rising output with a falling labor share would indicate that capital owners are capturing more of the gains.
- Investment and energy prices: strong data-center and infrastructure spending can offset productivity-related price relief in the near term.
- Adoption outside large firms and rich countries: broad diffusion determines whether gains are widely shared or concentrated.
What AI cannot yet be said to have done
Current evidence does not support a settled long-run percentage for AI’s combined effect on inflation, wages or employment. It also cannot establish that a particular occupation will disappear, that every exposed worker will lose pay, or that productivity gains will automatically reach households. Aggregate employment and wage-growth effects have so far been limited or difficult to detect in the available evidence, even as some groups may already be experiencing weaker opportunities.
The most defensible conclusion is conditional. AI can lower inflation when supply and productivity expand faster than demand and input costs. It can raise wages for workers whose tasks it complements and reduce pay or hiring where it substitutes for labor. It can increase inequality if capital ownership and high-skill advantages dominate, or reduce it if new tasks, competition and policy spread the gains. The eventual balance will be determined by adoption, worker mobility, market power and how the resulting income is shared.
