Agentic AI can help a security operations center (SOC) keep up with alerts by prioritizing routine signals, gathering context, and assisting investigations—but it should not be treated as a substitute for analyst judgment. The useful question is not whether an agent can make alerts disappear; it is whether it can reduce low-value work while preserving evidence, human oversight, and reliable escalation.

Why alert volume becomes an investigation problem

A SOC has to decide which signals deserve attention, then investigate them with finite analyst time. The bottleneck is not simply the number of alerts: it is the effort required to determine which are meaningful, gather relevant context, and act before a genuine threat causes harm.

SANS Institute’s 2026 AI-Human Collaboration in Modern SOCs uses a hypothetical organization receiving 4,500 alerts per day to illustrate the scale of the task. At 10 minutes per alert, that workload would take nearly 94 full-time analysts working without breaks. This is a workload illustration, not a staffing recommendation. The same report says analysts spend 80% to 90% of their time chasing false positives from traditional SIEM and SOAR tools; that is a report finding, and the page summary does not fully expose its methodology. The SANS 2026 First Look also summarizes findings from the SANS 2025 SOC Survey: two-thirds of SOC teams cannot keep pace with alert volume, and nearly half of alerts go uninvestigated. These are survey findings as reported by SANS, not universal rates for every security team. SANS Institute, 2026

These figures describe a capacity and prioritization challenge. They do not establish that an AI system can safely resolve every alert, or that deploying one will automatically reduce workload. To evaluate the role of agentic capabilities, it helps to separate three ways technology can support alert handling.

What “filtering through the noise” can mean

Filtering does not have to mean deleting or suppressing alerts. It can mean doing routine work at scale, giving an analyst better information, or helping a person work through a complicated investigation. A 2025 ACM Computing Surveys review groups alert-fatigue mitigation into three broad modes: automation, augmentation, and human-AI collaboration. They are useful categories for assessing a workflow, not a claim that every product provides all three. ACM Computing Surveys, 2025

Mode Role in the workflow What to assess
Automation Handles defined, routine work at scale, such as applying a consistent first-pass process to alerts. Which tasks can run without review, what conditions stop the automation, and how exceptions reach an analyst.
Augmentation Adds information to a human decision, for example by assembling relevant context for an alert. Whether the information is relevant and traceable, and whether the analyst can inspect the evidence behind it.
Human-AI collaboration Supports people working through complex or novel cases rather than replacing their investigation. How the system hands off work, communicates uncertainty, and allows an analyst to correct or override its output.

These modes can coexist in a SOC, but they are not interchangeable. A system that sorts a queue is not necessarily capable of conducting a sound investigation; an investigation assistant is not automatically authorized to take response actions. Assess each claimed function separately.

Where agentic capabilities may fit in a SOC

For a practical evaluation, think of agentic capability as the ability to carry out a bounded sequence of workflow tasks toward an investigative goal, rather than just producing a one-off answer. That framing is a way to analyze the work, not a certification or a guarantee about a particular product.

Prioritize alerts without hiding them

A first-pass system may help order alerts so analysts can focus on those that appear more urgent. Ask whether it explains the factors behind its prioritization and preserves the original alert for review. A lower queue position or an automated closure should not be mistaken for proof that an alert is harmless.

Gather context for investigation

An assistant may be useful if it can bring together information relevant to a case, such as the telemetry and identity or environment context needed for the task. Whether a system can access that information is an evaluation question, not an established capability across products. Check what sources it can use, how current that context is, and whether analysts can see where findings came from.

Support analyst decisions and handoffs

For complex or unfamiliar alerts, assistance can be more valuable than autonomous resolution. Consider whether the system can present its findings in a form an analyst can verify, identify when it lacks adequate context, and route an uncertain or high-impact case to a person. Human review should be tied to the action and its consequences, not added as a vague assurance that a person is “in the loop.”

Keep response actions distinct from investigation support

Screening, context gathering, and recommending a next step are different from changing a system or taking another consequential response action. Make the boundary explicit in the workflow: identify which actions are permitted, which require approval, and who can stop or reverse them. The cited sources support evaluating human review and governance; they do not establish that any specific agent is safe or effective at autonomous response.

How to evaluate an agent for alert work

There is no standardized product scorecard established by the sources cited here. Use the following questions to assess fit for a particular workflow, and compare evidence from vendors, surveys, and independent evaluations on their own terms.

  • Workflow scope: Is the system meant to screen alerts, gather context, assist an investigation, or take response actions? What is explicitly outside its scope?
  • Data and context: Can it access the telemetry and identity or environment information needed for the task? Can an analyst identify which information informed a result?
  • Human control: At what points can a person review, approve, escalate, override, or stop the process? Are those points appropriate to the impact of the action?
  • Uncertainty and escalation: What happens when information is missing, sources conflict, or the case is novel? Does the workflow route such cases for human attention?
  • Security and governance: How is the agent itself governed and secured, and what established cybersecurity practices need adapting for its use?
  • Operational evidence: What outcome is measured—such as investigation quality or time spent—and who measured it? Is the evidence a vendor claim, a survey result, or an independent evaluation?

Set a baseline for the chosen workflow before judging whether an agent helps. Measure the same task and time period before and after introduction, and examine quality as well as speed: faster handling is not a useful improvement if important signals are missed or analysts cannot verify the result. Treat this as a local evaluation plan, not a published standard.

Be careful with headline statistics about AI adoption or enthusiasm. The Cloud Security Alliance’s 2025 SOC agent benchmark reports that 94% of participants viewed AI in cybersecurity more positively after hands-on evaluation. That measures a change in participant perception; it is not an accuracy rate, proof of effectiveness, or evidence that a deployment reduced alert workload. Cloud Security Alliance, 2025

Similarly, the SANS 2026 SOC Report page describes a benchmark involving 444 practitioners and 69 cyber leaders. It reports that 74% of cyber leaders apply threat intelligence to security operations and threat hunting, while 26% use it in budget and spending decisions. Those figures provide context about reported threat-intelligence practices; they do not demonstrate that agents reduce alert noise. SANS Institute, 2026

Why agent security belongs in the evaluation

An agent involved in security operations is itself part of the security and governance problem. NIST’s 2026 analysis of responses to its request for information says respondents broadly agreed that fundamental cybersecurity practices remain relevant but need adaptation for agents. This supports examining agent security deliberately; it does not, by itself, establish a detailed control checklist. NIST, 2026

On April 30, 2026, the NSA announced that it joined the Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre and other organizations in releasing guidance titled Careful Adoption of Agentic AI Services. The announcement makes the guidance a relevant primary reference for organizations considering agentic AI, but readers should consult its full text for specific safeguards rather than infer controls from the announcement alone. NSA, April 30, 2026

In practice, include the agent’s own governance and security in the same review as its alert-handling role. Define who is accountable for its use, how its access and actions are bounded, and how its output is reviewed. The exact controls should be based on the organization’s requirements and the full applicable guidance, not assumed from a broad claim that an AI agent can work autonomously.

Use agents to protect analyst attention, not to erase accountability

The strongest case for agentic capabilities is a bounded one: help a SOC prioritize signals, assemble useful context, and assist people with investigation so scarce analyst attention goes to the cases that need it. Whether that works depends on the workflow, available data, human control, agent security, and measured outcomes. Alert reduction alone is not enough; the organization must still be able to understand and account for consequential decisions.
