Online age checks do not all work the same way. A site may ask you to declare your age, estimate an age range, check a document or credential, or receive a digital proof that you meet an age threshold. What is collected—and what the website learns—depends on the method and its implementation. An identity document or selfie may be processed by a checker even when the website receives only a yes-or-no result.
What “age verification” means online
Age verification is often used as an umbrella term for several different forms of age assurance. They differ in what they establish and what information they may need. A declaration is not the same as an estimate; an estimate is not proof of an exact birth date; and checking an official document is not the only way a site can apply an age rule.
The European Commission’s guidance on the Digital Services Act and the OECD’s 2025 report distinguish common approaches, including self-declaration, age estimation and age verification. The distinction matters because the label on a website’s button may tell you little about what happens to your data.

|---|---|---|---|
| Self-declaration | You enter or confirm an age. | Only what you declare; the method relies on your answer. | An age or date of birth you type into the service. |
| Inference | A service uses signals already available to it to infer an age or age band. | An inference, not necessarily a confirmed age. | The signals depend on the service; do not assume a particular signal is used unless it is documented. |
| Age estimation | A system estimates an age or range, potentially from biometric information such as a face image. | An estimated age range, not an exact identity or confirmed birth date. | A selfie or other biometric information may be involved, depending on the system. |
| Document or credential verification | A checker compares information with an authoritative source, such as an identity document or credential. | Whether the evidence satisfies the required age rule; the method and data extracted vary. | A document image and details printed on it, or information from a credential. |
| Proof of age | A credential or token asserts that you meet a threshold. | Potentially only that you are over a specified age, without sharing your name or exact birth date with the site. | A threshold result and, depending on the design, a credential or identifier. |
These categories can overlap in a user journey. For instance, a proof-of-age system may first check a document or another credential, then give you a token that can later communicate only whether you meet a threshold. The privacy properties depend on the particular system, not just the name of the method.

What information can an age check collect or reveal?
Consider two separate data flows: what the age-check provider receives to perform a check, and what the website receives as the result. They may be the same organization, or separate parties. A document-based check could involve the provider receiving an image of an ID and details printed on it, while the website receives only a confirmation such as “over 18.” Another implementation might transmit more information. The method alone does not establish what either party sees.
Depending on the flow, information may include:
- A declared age or date of birth.
- A scan or image of an identity document, with personal details printed on it.
- A selfie or biometric information used for age estimation or comparison.
- A credential or credential identifier.
- A result such as whether you meet a particular threshold.
A threshold result can disclose less than an exact date of birth, but it is still information about you. Whether it can be linked to your identity or activity depends on the design and on the data held by the provider and the website. The reviewed regulator and public-sector materials do not establish one retention period or processing practice for commercial providers generally.
Also check whether the age check is tied to other activity. A provider and a website could have different records, and the existence of a check does not by itself show whether either party can link it to browsing activity. Look for the specific parties involved, what is shared between them, whether identifiers are used, and how long records remain available.
Does an age-check provider keep an ID or selfie?
There is no universal answer. Retention and deletion depend on the provider, the website’s implementation and the applicable law. Do not assume an uploaded document or selfie is deleted immediately just because a check finishes, and do not assume it is kept indefinitely without reading the relevant notice.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) advises entities covered by Australian privacy principles to explain what is collected, why, by whom, how long it is kept, and what alternatives or review processes are available. Its guidance says personal and sensitive inputs such as biometric information, templates and identity documents should be destroyed once the purposes for collection have been met. This is regulator guidance for entities within that Australian privacy framework; it is not a description of every service’s actual behavior or a universal rule for every country.
Before submitting information, look for a privacy notice for the exact age-check flow—not only the general privacy policy. Check whether the notice gives a deletion point or retention period for the specific inputs, identifies any other recipients, and explains whether information is used for another purpose. If those details are not stated, the notice does not establish what happens to your copy or how long it remains.
Can a website see your date of birth?
It may, but it does not have to. A site that asks you to type a birth date receives that value. In another design, a checker can examine evidence and return only a threshold result. The website’s data view is therefore a property of the implementation, not an automatic consequence of every age check.
The European Commission describes a privacy-preserving proof-of-age design in which a user is onboarded through a supported route such as a biometric passport or ID card, a national electronic identity (eID), a third-party app such as a banking app, or an in-person process. The Commission says only confirmation that the user is over a threshold is saved in the app—not the user’s name or birthday—and that the app later tells a platform whether the person is over the requested age. It also says communication with the initial proof provider ends after certification.

In the Commission’s stated blueprint, a proof presented to a service does not include ID information that traces the user, and the service’s check does not reveal information back to the issuer. These are claims about the Commission’s design, not guarantees about unrelated commercial tools. A site’s own notice should tell you whether it receives a date of birth, a document image or only an age result.
How to assess a specific website’s age check
Before starting, read the notice linked from the check screen and identify the organization asking for your information. If a separate provider is involved, look for its notice too. Use this checklist to evaluate what the particular flow says, rather than inferring its behavior from a generic label such as “age verification.”
- Identify the parties. Find the name of the website operator and the age-check provider, if there is one. Check which party receives each item of information.
- Find the precise input. Does the flow ask for a declared birth date, an identity document, a selfie, a credential, or something else? The notice should describe the data rather than merely call it an age check.
- Check the website’s result. Does the site receive a document image, an exact date of birth, an age range, a threshold result or another output? Do not treat the provider’s input and the site’s output as interchangeable.
- Read sharing and retention terms. Look for named recipients, retention periods or deletion events, and whether data is used for purposes beyond checking age. If the terms do not specify a detail, treat it as unstated rather than assuming a particular practice.
- Look for alternatives and review. Find out what to do if the check is inaccessible, fails, or returns an incorrect result. The service should explain any alternative route or process for challenging the outcome.
- Check the applicable jurisdiction. Privacy duties differ by country and can depend on the organization and service. Guidance from one regulator is not automatically the law governing a site elsewhere.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) recommends risk-based, proportionate use of age assurance and says it should not be a default condition for accessing the internet. That is regulator guidance, not a universal legal rule. The OAIC similarly states: “Age checks should not seek to reveal the identity of the individual and should only validate age for the purpose of accessing a specific service.” These principles help assess whether the data requested is proportionate to the particular access decision.

What can go wrong—and what to do
Regulators identify risks to consider, not outcomes that every age-check system necessarily causes. They include exposure of sensitive data in a breach, profiling or tracking, collection or retention beyond what is needed, discriminatory or disproportionate effects, and discouraging people from using a service or accessing content. An age check can also produce an incorrect result or be inaccessible to someone who cannot use the chosen method.

- The requested data seems excessive. Pause and compare the input with the stated purpose. Ask whether the service offers a less revealing route or explains why the information is necessary.
- The notice does not say who receives the data or how long it is kept. Do not infer an answer from the interface. Check the provider’s own notice, if identified, or contact the service for clarification before proceeding.
- The check fails or gives the wrong result. Use the stated review or appeal route and ask what evidence is required. If an alternative method is listed, consider whether it is more accessible or more proportionate for you.
- You cannot use the offered method. Check for an alternative verification route or a way to request assistance. The service’s notice should explain how to proceed when a check cannot be completed.
When evaluating accessibility or fairness, consider whether the method depends on a device, document or biometric input you cannot provide, and whether there is a meaningful alternative. An estimation system’s output should not be mistaken for a verified date of birth: it is an estimate, with a different type of result and a possible need for review if the service uses it to restrict access.

The European Commission says its EU age-verification solution became feature ready on 15 April 2026. “Feature ready” does not mean it is already available to every resident across the EU. The Commission’s current FAQ says availability across the EU is expected by the end of 2026 and depends on Member States being ready to deploy it. The solution can be customized by Member States and market players, so implementation and timing can vary.
Separately, in a policy publication dated 29 April 2026, the Commission encouraged Member States to make privacy-preserving age-verification tools available by 31 December 2026. The same publication reported that 24% of 14-to-17-year-olds in six EU countries said they saw pornographic content at least once per week. That figure is attributed to the European Commission and is not a global estimate.

The Commission’s threshold-only design illustrates how an age check can be structured to reduce what a service learns. It does not establish that a commercial site’s current check uses the same architecture, or that all EU residents can use the Commission’s solution today. For a particular service, its live flow and privacy notice remain the relevant sources for what it collects and shares.

How to tell whether an age-verification app is official
A familiar-looking app name or a link on a third-party page is not enough to establish official status. Confirm the app through the relevant public authority’s own website or official app-distribution listing, and verify that the publisher and destination match the authority’s instructions. For the EU solution, consult the European Commission’s current information and the relevant Member State’s deployment details; the Commission says national readiness affects availability.
Before installing or submitting information, check the app publisher, the authority responsible for the service, the data requested during setup, and the privacy notice describing storage and sharing. Be cautious if an app asks for information that is not explained in the official instructions, or if you cannot verify who operates it. The official status of one public-sector tool says nothing about a separate age-check app used by a website.
What to remember when a site asks you to prove your age
Ask two distinct questions: what must the checker receive to make its decision, and what will the website learn from that decision? Then verify who operates each part of the process, what data is retained or shared, and what recourse exists if the check is wrong or unusable. A carefully designed system can disclose only whether you meet a threshold, but the label “age verification” alone cannot tell you that it does.
