The decades-old mystery was avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM), a fatal neurological disease caused by a toxin called aetokthonotoxin (AETX). A 2021 study identified AETX as a neurotoxin produced by the cyanobacterium Aetokthonos hydrillicola, which grows on submerged plants such as invasive hydrilla. Exposure can move through the food web from contaminated vegetation to animals that eat it and then to predators, including eagles.
What killed the bald eagles?
The disease was AVM, first diagnosed in bald eagles in Arkansas in 1994. The cause was identified decades later: AETX, a pentabrominated biindole alkaloid produced by A. hydrillicola. The authors of the 2021 Science study concluded that the toxin causes AVM.
That distinction matters: AVM is the disease, AETX is its causal agent, and hydrilla is a plant on which the toxin-producing cyanobacterium can grow. Hydrilla itself is not the toxin.
How the toxin reaches eagles
A. hydrillicola grows on submerged aquatic vegetation, including hydrilla. When animals eat contaminated vegetation, they can be exposed to the toxin; predators may then encounter it by eating affected prey. This food-chain pathway helps explain how a toxin associated with plant leaves can affect birds higher in the ecosystem.

The 2021 field findings included A. hydrillicola colonization on hydrilla in more than half of surveyed watersheds. That finding documents the organism’s presence in the survey; it does not mean every colonized watershed had confirmed wildlife deaths.
Why hydrilla alone does not explain the disease
Toxin production depends on environmental conditions as well as the presence of the cyanobacterium. Bromide availability is a key factor that promotes AETX production. The disease is therefore better understood as an interaction among the cyanobacterium, the aquatic plant setting, and bromide—not as an automatic consequence of finding hydrilla in a waterway.

The 2021 study established AETX’s causal role in AVM, but questions remain about the source of bromide in affected waters and the toxin’s detailed mechanism. Identifying the cause does not by itself establish the extent of exposure or risk to other animal groups.

Earlier work had linked AVM-positive water bodies with submerged aquatic plants and an epiphytic cyanobacterium, but identifying the actual toxin required finding a compound produced by environmental colonies on plant leaves. Initial attempts to culture the cyanobacterium did not yield the toxin. Researchers later used mass-spectrometry imaging on environmental samples and detected a brominated compound associated with the colonies.

The team then investigated bromide’s role in toxin formation. In their 2021 paper, Steffen Breinlinger and colleagues reported AETX’s identity, its biosynthetic gene cluster, and its biological activity, supporting their conclusion that it causes AVM.

A 2021 Chemistry World report put the number of bald eagles recovered and properly diagnosed with AVM since its discovery at at least 130. The report said actual fatalities were likely higher. This is a historical figure from 2021, not a current cumulative toll: the available sources do not establish an updated total through 2026.

Nor does the discovery explain every bald eagle death. The evidence concerns AVM in particular affected reservoirs and diagnosed cases; a bird’s death cannot be attributed to AVM simply because hydrilla or the cyanobacterium occurs in its watershed.
