Broker stock-price targets are useful, but they are not dependable point predictions. Across the studies available, roughly half of targets get the broad direction or reach their target under a generous “touched at any time” test. Errors are often large, targets tend to be optimistic, and accuracy deteriorates as the forecast ages. Treat a target as a dated scenario built on assumptions—not as a promise about where a share price will trade.
The practical way to judge one is to identify its horizon and definition of success, then check directional accuracy, target-hit rate, absolute error, signed bias, revisions and performance against a benchmark. Those are different tests and can produce very different answers.
What a broker stock-price target actually is
A price target is an analyst’s estimate of what a company’s share price could be at a stated future date, commonly 6 or 12 months ahead. The number normally comes from a valuation model such as discounted cash flow, comparable-company multiples, an asset-based valuation or a combination of methods. The report may also include earnings forecasts, a recommendation such as buy, hold or sell, and a list of assumptions.

It depends on revenue growth, margins, interest rates, foreign-exchange rates, commodity prices, competitive conditions and the valuation multiple investors assign to the business. If any of those inputs change, the analyst can revise the target without the original estimate having been mathematically “wrong” under its initial assumptions.

A target also has a timestamp. A target issued after a major earnings release is not directly comparable with one issued months earlier, even if both say “12-month target.” The starting share price, the expected catalyst and the remaining forecast period are different.
“Accurate” has five different meanings
Before quoting an accuracy percentage, define the test. A target can appear successful under one measure and poor under another.
| Measure | What it asks | What it can hide |
|---|---|---|
| Directional accuracy | Did the share price finish above or below its starting price as forecast? | A correct up/down call can still miss the final price by a large amount. |
| Target-hit rate | Did the share price touch or exceed the target during a stated window? | A brief intraday touch may count even if the stock finishes far below the target. |
| Absolute percentage error | How far was the realized price from the target, ignoring whether the miss was above or below? | It does not show whether optimism or pessimism caused the miss. |
| Signed bias | Were targets systematically above or below the eventual price? | Opposite errors can cancel in an average, making a forecast look better than it is. |
| Investment performance | Did acting on the target beat a relevant benchmark after risk, costs and dividends? | A target may be directionally useful without producing excess returns, or vice versa. |
For example, an analyst could correctly predict that a stock would rise, yet set a target 40% above the eventual price. That is a directional success but a poor price estimate. Conversely, a target that misses the direction by a small amount may be close in percentage terms but still lose money for an investor who traded on it.

What published studies found
The available evidence does not establish one current accuracy rate for every broker, country or market. It spans different periods, samples and definitions. The figures below are therefore benchmarks, not a universal score for today’s Wall Street research.
2024 study of Taiwanese stocks
Lee, Hsieh and Miao (2024) examined broker target forecasts for Taiwanese stocks. Their indexed abstract reports that only 54% correctly predicted the future direction of the price movement. At a one-year horizon, the study reports a 39.1% mean absolute error, meaning the average distance between the forecast and the realized price was large relative to the price level.
The same abstract reports a 24.8% absolute pricing error, a 9.4% upward bias and a 21% over-prediction of actual price changes. In plain language, targets were generally too high and exaggerated how much prices would move. The study also finds that accuracy decays before the nominal 12-month expiry and that brokerage experience with the industry and the individual stock is associated with better targets.

These numbers should not be converted into a claim that 54% of all analysts are right. The sample concerns Taiwanese equities, and the 39.1% figure is a one-year mean absolute error, not a 39.1% probability of failure.
Brav and Lehavy’s target-hit test
Brav and Lehavy (2005) used analyst reports from an earlier period and defined a target as successful when the stock reached or exceeded the projected price at any time during the following 12 months. Under that generous definition, approximately 54% of targets were achieved or exceeded. For the remainder, the stock reached an average of 84% of the target within the year.
This result cannot be compared directly with a closing-price test. A stock that briefly trades at the target and then falls back still counts as a success. The study is valuable because it shows how much the answer changes when “success” means any touch rather than the price at the forecast date.
Womack’s U.S. brokerage evidence
Kent L. Womack’s 1996 study examined the information content of recommendations from major U.S. brokerages. It found a +2.4% mean post-event drift after buy recommendations, described as modest and short-lived, and a −9.1% drift after sell recommendations that was larger and extended for six months.
This is evidence about market reaction to recommendations, not a direct score for the numerical accuracy of price targets. It suggests that sell signals in that sample carried more persistent information than buy signals, but it does not mean every sell target will be reached.

Because the study uses its own accuracy threshold and a Polish-market sample, its 11% figure is not a contradiction of the approximately 54% target-hit result above. It is a reminder that the threshold, horizon and market determine the statistic.
Why a target can be “right” and still be unhelpful
A target can be touched only briefly
Intraday prices can spike through a target because of an earnings surprise, takeover speculation or a broad market rally. A touch-based score credits that event even if the stock closes below the target and never returns. For a long-term investor, the closing price at the stated date may matter more than a temporary high.
The starting price may be stale
If a broker leaves a target unchanged while the share price moves sharply, the percentage upside or downside displayed on a website can become misleading. Always record the target’s issue date, the share price used at that time and the date on which the target is supposed to be evaluated.
Targets can move with the market
An analyst may raise a target because sector multiples expanded, even when the company’s operating forecast changed little. That revision can be rational, but it means the target is partly a forecast of market valuation rather than only of company performance.
A correct direction can still produce a poor trade
Suppose a stock rises 5% while the target implies a 30% gain. The direction was correct, but an investor who bought at the report’s publication may have earned little after the spread, commission, tax and opportunity cost. Investment performance must be measured separately.
How to audit a broker target step by step
You can build a useful history without treating a public consensus page as a complete database. The key is to preserve the information that disappears when targets are revised.

- Capture the original report date. Record when the analyst issued the target, the recommendation, the reference share price and the stated horizon.
- Write down the valuation method. Note whether the report uses discounted cash flow, a price-to-earnings multiple, enterprise-value-to-sales, sum-of-the-parts analysis or another method.
- List the assumptions. Extract forecast revenue, earnings, margins, capital expenditure, discount rate, terminal growth and any sector or commodity assumptions that are stated.
- Preserve every revision. Record each new target, the date of the change and whether the analyst changed the earnings model, the valuation multiple or both. Do not replace the original number with the latest one.
- Choose the evaluation rule before looking at the result. Decide whether success means touching the target, closing at or above it on the horizon date, finishing within a percentage band, or beating a benchmark after dividends.
- Calculate the outcome. Store the realized price at the horizon and the highest and lowest price during the window. Include cash dividends if you are measuring investor return rather than price alone.
- Compare with a benchmark. Use a broad market or sector index matched to the stock’s region and currency. A target that appears successful only because the entire market rallied provides limited evidence of analyst skill.
- Keep failed and withdrawn targets. Removing reports that were suspended, withdrawn or never updated creates survivor bias. Explain why a target disappeared instead of deleting it.
Useful calculations
For a target of T and a realized price P at the chosen horizon, the absolute percentage error is:
|P − T| ÷ T × 100
Signed bias can be expressed as:
(T − P) ÷ P × 100
A positive result means the target was above the realized price, which is an optimistic bias. For a directional test, compare the sign of P − P₀ with the analyst’s predicted direction, where P₀ is the price when the target was issued.
How to compare brokers fairly
A broker with the highest apparent hit rate may simply use a shorter horizon, a wider tolerance or a touch-based definition. Compare like with like across six dimensions.
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Age and horizon | Were targets issued in the same period, and are they all evaluated at 6, 12 or another number of months? |
| Hit definition | Does success require an intraday touch, a closing price, or a specified error band? |
| Error and bias | What are the mean absolute error, median error and signed bias? Are a few extreme misses distorting the average? |
| Direction | How often did the forecast correctly call an increase or decrease, independent of the size of the move? |
| Revisions and consensus distance | How often does the analyst revise, and how far is the initial target from the contemporaneous broker consensus? |
| Experience | Does the analyst or team have a documented history covering that industry and company, and is the history measured over enough observations? |
Use medians as well as means. A single takeover or market crash can make a mean error look extreme. Report the number of observations, because a 70% hit rate from ten reports is less informative than a 60% rate from several hundred comparable reports.

Discount rate and terminal value
In a discounted-cash-flow model, modest changes to the discount rate or terminal growth rate can create large changes in the present value. Ask which input drives most of the target and whether the report provides a sensitivity table.
Balance-sheet and dilution risks
Debt refinancing, share issuance, employee options and acquisitions can change the value attributable to each share. A target based on enterprise value may not reflect per-share dilution unless the model explicitly includes it.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
- Reading the target as a guarantee: Replace “the stock will reach” with “the stock could reach if the stated assumptions hold.”
- Mixing horizons: Do not compare a 12-month target with a 3-month trading call without labeling the difference.
- Counting only visible targets: Include discontinued coverage and unchanged targets, or explain the missing observations.
- Using a consensus as independent evidence: Several brokers may rely on the same company guidance and sector assumptions. Agreement does not necessarily mean independent confirmation.
- Ignoring revisions: A target that was repeatedly cut before the evaluation date should be analyzed as a sequence, not only by its final number.
- Comparing currencies or corporate actions incorrectly: Adjust historical prices and targets for splits, consolidations and currency changes before calculating errors.
- Confusing price return with total return: Add dividends when judging what an investor earned, and state whether the benchmark is also total-return adjusted.
- Overweighting a famous analyst: Reputation is not a substitute for a transparent, sufficiently large track record in the specific sector.
A practical decision framework for investors
Use a target as one input in a staged decision rather than as the reason to buy or sell by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Start with the business case. Decide whether the company’s revenue, cash flow, balance sheet and competitive position fit your thesis without the target.
- Translate the target into an expected return. Calculate the percentage upside or downside from the current price, then subtract realistic trading costs and account for dividends.
- Test the assumptions. Build a bear, base and bull case. If the target is reachable only in the bull case, treat it as an optimistic scenario.
- Check time and catalysts. Identify earnings dates, debt maturities, product launches and regulatory decisions that could change the forecast before the horizon.
- Seek disconfirming evidence. Read analysts with different views and compare the target with sector valuation and the benchmark’s expected return.
- Define an exit rule. Decide in advance what would invalidate the thesis, rather than waiting for a target revision to make the decision for you.
Worked example: why the metric changes the answer
Assume a broker issues a 12-month target of $120 when the stock trades at $100. During the year, the stock briefly reaches $121 but finishes at $108.
- Under a touch-based target-hit test, the forecast is a success.
- At the horizon date, the stock is 10% below the target, so the absolute percentage error is 10%.
- The stock rose 8% from the starting price, so a directional “up” call is correct.
- If the relevant benchmark rose 12%, the position underperformed by 4 percentage points before costs.
None of these statements cancels the others. They answer different questions, which is why a single “analyst accuracy” number is inadequate.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
The studies support several cautious conclusions:
- Broad directional calls can be only modestly better than a coin flip; the Taiwanese sample’s 54% directional accuracy is an example.
- Numerical misses can be large; the same study’s 39.1% one-year mean absolute error demonstrates that direction and distance are separate issues.
- Optimism is measurable; the reported 9.4% upward bias and 21% over-prediction of realized changes are not neutral errors.
- A generous target-hit definition can produce an approximately 54% success rate, while a stricter deviation threshold can produce a much lower rate, as in the Warsaw study.
- Recommendation-related price drift may be short-lived for buys and more persistent for sells in a particular U.S. sample, but that is not a universal target-accuracy rule.
- Older samples and non-U.S. markets may not describe current U.S. trading conditions. Structural changes in market data, passive investing, regulation and electronic execution can alter results.
No cited study establishes a definitive accuracy percentage for every broker and market today. The honest answer to “How often do analysts get their targets right?” is therefore: it depends on the market, period, analyst, horizon and definition of right. In many documented samples, roughly half succeed on a broad directional or touch-based measure, while the typical price miss is materially larger than investors expect.
