AI camera traps do not have a universal “poacher detection accuracy” rate. Most systems identify visual categories such as person, animal or vehicle. They cannot reliably determine a person’s intent, identity or whether an act meets the legal definition of poaching. In practice, an AI alert is a triage signal: it helps staff find important images quickly, but a trained person must review the evidence and verify the situation before enforcement action.
The strongest published benchmark found 93.8% person-detection accuracy at a 95% confidence threshold, with person precision as high as 99.6%. However, performance across individual sites ranged from 52% to 100%. That spread is the central fact for anyone planning an anti-poaching deployment: a model that performs well in one reserve, habitat or camera setup may miss people or generate more false alarms elsewhere.
What an AI camera trap can—and cannot—detect
A camera trap combines a motion or time trigger, an image sensor and software that analyzes captured frames. An object detector may label a region of an image as a person, animal or vehicle. A second classifier or a rule set can then rank events for attention. Cellular models can transmit selected images or alerts to a control room, while offline systems may store results for later review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThose labels describe what is visible, not why it is happening. A person carrying a rifle, a ranger on patrol, a tourist, a researcher and a local resident may all receive the same “person” label. The software generally cannot establish trespass, intent to hunt, possession of illegal equipment, identity or the legality of the activity. “Poacher” is therefore an operational and legal conclusion that requires context beyond a single frame.

Detection, classification and identification are different tasks
- Detection: Is a person, animal or vehicle visible in the image?
- Classification: What broad type or species does the visible subject resemble?
- Identification: Can investigators distinguish a particular person, vehicle or individual animal?
- Intent assessment: Does the activity constitute poaching under applicable law?
Accuracy generally declines as a system moves down that list. A strong person detector is not evidence of a validated poacher classifier.
What published measurements show
The following figures come from studies with different objectives and datasets. They should not be combined into one overall score.
| Study or system | Task and conditions | Reported result | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mitterwallner et al. (2024) | Person detection with MegaDetector across 352,426 images from multiple locations, evaluated at a 95% confidence threshold | 93.8% person-detection accuracy; person precision up to 99.6% | Evidence that broad person detection can be strong, not a poacher-intent accuracy rate |
| Mitterwallner et al. (2024) | Same evaluation, comparing study locations | Site-level person accuracy ranged from 52% to 100% | Performance can change dramatically with habitat, camera placement and local image characteristics |
| Leorna and Brinkman (2022) | Wildlife presence detection in motion-triggered versus time-lapse images | At least 94.6% accuracy for motion-triggered images; 61.6% or lower for time-lapse images | Trigger method and image quality materially affect detection performance |
| Tabak et al., USGS MLWIC2 (2019) | Primary species model and out-of-sample datasets | 96.8% primary-model accuracy; 36%–91% on out-of-sample datasets | A model can look excellent on familiar data yet transfer poorly to new locations |
| Smith et al. (2024) | Echidna image detection | All 155 true echidna images detected, but 500 false positives were generated | High recall can coexist with an impractical false-alert workload |
How to read the 93.8% figure
The 93.8% result is tied to a 95% confidence threshold and to the study’s person-detection task. It is not a guarantee that 93.8 out of every 100 attempted poachers will be found. At that threshold, the study reported person precision as high as 99.6%, meaning that a very large share of alerts labeled as people were correct under the tested conditions. The authors also found the best site only tells part of the story: another location in the same evaluation performed far worse.
Why no single “poacher accuracy” exists
Published camera-trap research usually labels images for visible objects or species. A defensible poacher metric would require a clearly defined event, representative positive and negative examples, consistent legal criteria, and independent testing across the intended geography and season. The cited studies do not provide that universal benchmark. A vendor claim that omits those details cannot be translated into an enforcement-grade probability.

Thresholds change the balance between missed people and false alarms
Most detectors produce a confidence score. Setting a lower threshold allows more borderline person images through. This usually increases recall—the share of actual people detected—but also increases false positives. Raising the threshold does the opposite: fewer alerts are wrong, but some real people are discarded.
In the Mitterwallner et al. (2024) evaluation, person recall was highest at a 50% threshold, while person precision reached 99.6% at 95%. The appropriate setting depends on the mission. A conservation survey that cannot afford a large review queue may favor higher precision. A time-critical patrol operation may accept more false alarms to reduce the chance of missing a person.
Do not select a threshold from a brochure alone. Test several settings on images from the actual deployment area, measure alerts per camera-day and review time, and decide what level of missed detection the ranger team can tolerate.
Why camera-trap accuracy varies so widely
Habitat and camera placement
Dense vegetation, steep terrain, shadows and cluttered backgrounds make people harder to separate from branches and other objects. A camera aimed across a trail may show a person’s full body; a camera aimed along the trail may capture only a face, shoulder or backpack. Mounting height, angle and distance change the number of pixels available for classification.

Subject size, occlusion and blur
Small, distant, partly hidden and motion-blurred subjects are difficult for both people and algorithms. A person behind foliage may occupy only a few pixels. Fast movement can smear details, while an image captured at the edge of a trigger zone may contain only part of the subject. These cases should be included in validation rather than removed as inconvenient examples.
Motion-triggered versus time-lapse capture
Leorna and Brinkman (2022) reported at least 94.6% wildlife-presence accuracy in motion-triggered images, compared with 61.6% or lower in time-lapse images. Motion triggers tend to capture active subjects at useful distances, whereas scheduled images can contain empty scenes, partial subjects or changing light. The figures concern wildlife presence, not poacher detection, but they demonstrate why capture design affects model results.
Night and infrared scenes
Night images can be monochrome, high-contrast or illuminated unevenly. Glare, infrared reflection, rain and movement can erase the visual cues a detector relies on. A system that performs well in daylight should not be assumed to perform equally well at night. Request separate daytime and nighttime recall, precision and false-alert measurements, preferably for the same camera model, illumination mode and habitat.

Geographic transfer
The MLWIC2 results reported by Tabak et al. (2019) illustrate the transfer problem: the primary species model reached 96.8% accuracy, but out-of-sample datasets ranged from 36% to 91%. New vegetation, animal populations, camera housings and weather can alter image appearance. Local validation and periodic rechecking are essential after relocation or seasonal change.

False positives from ordinary scene changes
Moving vegetation, branches, cones, maintenance activity and blurry objects can trigger incorrect detections. In the Smith et al. (2024) echidna study, all 155 true echidna images were detected, yet the system produced 500 false positives. That is a useful warning: a detector can miss very few real subjects and still overwhelm a ranger team with unnecessary alerts.
Can an AI trail camera tell a poacher from a hiker?
Not from a generic person label alone. Distinguishing suspicious activity requires additional evidence such as repeated movement patterns, entry into restricted areas, vehicle context, time, direction of travel, equipment visible across multiple frames and reports from staff. Even then, an automated rule should prioritize an event for review rather than declare guilt.
A practical design uses layers:
- Object detection: filter frames for people and vehicles.
- Event prioritization: apply location, time, movement or equipment rules to rank potentially important events.
- Human review: inspect the full sequence, not just the thumbnail, and compare with authorized patrol or research activity.
- Operational verification: confirm location, safety, identity and legal authority before dispatch or enforcement.
The BioScience review documents a TrailGuard AI camera detecting a gang of poachers. That case demonstrates operational potential, but it does not report validated sensitivity, specificity or a false-alarm rate for poacher detection. It should not be converted into a percentage claim.

| Measure | Why it matters | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Person recall | Shows how many actual people are found | What proportion of labeled people were detected, and how was the denominator defined? |
| Person precision | Shows how many person alerts are correct | How many alerts were false, and at what confidence threshold? |
| False alerts per camera-day | Translates model behavior into staff workload | How many non-person alerts should a reviewer expect in this habitat? |
| Night and difficult-scene performance | Reveals weaknesses hidden by clear daylight images | Are distant, occluded, blurred and infrared images reported separately? |
| Geographic transfer | Indicates whether results generalize | Was testing independent and conducted in comparable terrain and seasons? |
| Alert latency | Determines whether a response is timely | What is the elapsed time from capture to notification under normal connectivity? |
| Power and connectivity endurance | Controls gaps in surveillance | How does performance change when signal is weak or batteries decline? |
| Privacy and access controls | Protects people captured incidentally | How are images stored, transmitted, retained and audited? |
| Human-review workflow | Prevents automated labels becoming unsupported accusations | Can staff review sequences, add notes and record disposition? |
Deploying a system for anti-poaching work
1. Define the event before buying hardware
Write down what should generate an alert: any person, a person inside a restricted zone, a vehicle at a closed gate, or a pattern requiring supervisor review. Specify the response time, the people authorized to receive images and the evidence needed before dispatch. A vague objective produces an unmeasurable system.
2. Establish a local baseline
Run cameras in the intended locations and label a representative sample of day, night, weather, empty-scene, staff and visitor images. Include known difficult cases. Measure recall, precision, false alerts per camera-day and review time at multiple thresholds.
3. Choose camera and communications settings together
Hardware affects trigger timing, image resolution, night illumination, battery life and cellular transmission. The cited field work used Reconyx HyperFire2 and Cuddeback C2/CuddebackG cameras, but results from those setups should not be assumed for a different camera, lens or network. Confirm that the camera can capture enough detail at the expected distance and can transmit the frames quickly enough for the response plan.
4. Keep a human in the loop
Route alerts to trained reviewers who can inspect adjacent frames, check authorized activity and mark outcomes such as confirmed person, animal, staff, false alarm or unresolved. Use those labels to tune thresholds and identify locations that need repositioning.
5. Audit after deployment
Recalculate performance after seasonal vegetation changes, camera moves, firmware or model updates and major weather events. Track missed detections discovered during patrols as well as alerts that were correct. A system’s first field score is not permanent.
Common failure modes and practical responses
| Symptom | Likely cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Many alerts from empty frames | Wind-driven vegetation, loose mounts or a low threshold | Stabilize the camera, clear the trigger zone where permitted, and raise or retune the threshold after measuring recall. |
| People missed at night | Insufficient illumination, blur or subjects outside the useful range | Test night images separately; adjust placement, illumination and trigger timing rather than assuming a software fix. |
| High accuracy during setup, poor results in a new reserve | Geographic or hardware domain shift | Run an independent local validation set and recalibrate before relying on alerts. |
| Rangers stop trusting alerts | False-alert workload exceeds review capacity | Measure false alerts per camera-day, prioritize by risk and create a feedback process for threshold changes. |
| An alert is treated as proof of poaching | Confusing detection with intent or legal status | Require sequence review, corroborating information and authorized human verification before action. |
What level of trust is reasonable?
Use AI camera traps to reduce the time spent searching large image collections and to surface events that deserve attention. Trust a validated person alert as a prompt to look, not as a finding that a poaching offense occurred. The appropriate confidence threshold is a mission decision: higher precision reduces wasted reviews, while higher recall reduces the chance of overlooking a person. Neither choice removes the need for local testing, night-time evaluation, maintenance and human confirmation.
