Accessibility settings can make a confusing game easier to follow by making information clearer, adding another way to receive the same cue, improving navigation, and giving you more control over timing or challenge. They do not automatically explain every mechanic, and the available options differ by game, platform, edition, and difficulty mode.
The most effective approach is to identify what is actually blocking your understanding—small text, a missed sound, an unclear objective, getting lost, a difficult input, or action that moves too quickly—then enable the setting aimed at that specific barrier. Try one change at a time so you can tell what helped.
Why a game can feel confusing
Confusion is not always caused by a complicated story or an unfamiliar genre. A player may understand the goal but miss the information needed to act on it. Instructions can be too small to read, icons can blend into the scenery, a sound cue can be inaudible, a menu can have unpredictable focus behavior, or an objective can disappear before the player remembers it. Fast timers and demanding combinations of buttons create a different kind of comprehension problem: the player may know what to do but cannot process or perform it in time.

Accessibility design treats these as information and interaction barriers, not as a lack of ability. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines cover text display, contrast, captions, additional cue channels, object clarity, navigation, focus, context, time limits, motion, and difficulty. The guidelines page was last updated on August 14, 2026, so labels and recommendations can evolve as games and platforms change.

Accessibility settings are therefore best understood as a set of alternate routes to the same information. Enlarged text improves visual legibility; narration supplies spoken output; captions make important audio visible; a compass or story-path aid reduces the memory and spatial work needed to find the next area; and a speed modifier gives the player longer to interpret an event.
First identify the barrier
Before changing several options, describe the moment at which understanding breaks down. The answer determines which category to open.
- Reading problem: You cannot comfortably read tutorials, subtitles, prompts, or item descriptions.
- Missed audio: You hear dialogue but miss footsteps, attacks, environmental signals, or other non-speech sounds.
- Menu problem: You cannot tell which item is selected or cannot reach the accessibility options reliably.
- Navigation problem: You lose the route, forget the objective, or cannot locate an enemy, pickup, or interaction point.
- Input or traversal problem: A button combination, ledge, movement sequence, or puzzle blocks progress.
- Pacing problem: A timer, combat sequence, or rapidly changing scene moves faster than you can understand.
- Visual overload: Too many effects, markers, or interface elements compete for attention.
Open the game’s Accessibility, Settings, or Options menu before starting, from a pause screen, or at the first-launch setup. Menu names and locations vary, and some settings are available only in a particular mode or edition.

Make instructions, prompts, and icons readable
Increase text and subtitle size
Look separately for UI text size, subtitle size, caption size, and sometimes menu text. A game may enlarge one without enlarging the others. Larger text helps with tutorials, objective descriptions, item statistics, and button prompts, while larger subtitles help when dialogue is delivered during movement or combat.
God of War Ragnarök documents separate scaling for UI text and subtitles or captions. That separation is useful: you can enlarge only the information that is hard to read instead of making every menu occupy more of the screen.

Improve contrast and color distinction
Contrast options can separate text, interactable objects, enemies, and critical markers from their backgrounds. Color-correction modes can help when an important state is communicated mainly through color. God of War Ragnarök lists color-correction options for critical in-world UI and offers four icon-size choices, showing why it is worth checking for more than a single “high contrast” switch.
High contrast is not universally easier. Microsoft specifically cautions that high-contrast interfaces can be difficult for some players with cognitive disabilities or reading difficulty. If a stark treatment makes the screen harder to parse, try a milder contrast, a different color scheme, larger icons, or fewer interface elements instead.

Choose settings that make an interaction marker persistent, enlarge its icon, or distinguish it from decorative art when those controls exist. Do not assume every game includes them. A verified option in one title is evidence of what that title offers, not a standard feature across the industry.
Add another channel for information you miss
Use captions for non-speech audio
Captions can do more than transcribe dialogue. When a game labels non-speech audio, they may identify an approaching enemy, an alarm, a door opening, a machine activating, or a sound that indicates a traversal opportunity. Check whether the caption menu includes non-speech descriptions, speaker names, directional indicators, or background audio.
God of War Ragnarök documents captions for non-speech audio as well as scalable subtitle and caption text. Coverage remains game-specific: captions may not describe every sound, and a caption cannot always convey the exact distance or urgency of an event.

Turn on audio cues or directional information
Audio-cue settings can add a sound or spoken signal to an action that would otherwise be communicated visually. In God of War Ragnarök, documented audio cues correspond to some combat and traversal actions. These cues can be useful when effects obscure a prompt or when looking away from the interface is unavoidable.
Use headphones, speakers, or a cue volume that keeps the signal distinct from music and dialogue. If a cue becomes repetitive or distracting, reduce its volume or disable it while retaining captions. The goal is redundancy, not maximum volume.
Try screen narration for menus
Screen narration reads selected menu content aloud. It is particularly useful when focus is difficult to see or when visual text remains tiring even after enlargement. God of War Ragnarök documents narration for selected menus; that wording matters because narration may not cover every screen or spoken gameplay event.
Make menus easier to operate
A player can be excluded before gameplay if the settings menu itself is confusing. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 112 states: “The goal of this Xbox Accessibility Guideline (XAG) is to provide players with clear and consistent UI navigation experiences throughout the entirety of a game.” The same guideline warns that if a player cannot navigate menus to configure settings or select an appropriate game mode because of confusing or inconsistent components, “they can be excluded from the game from the very beginning.”
Look for a first-launch accessibility prompt, a predictable focus highlight, consistent button behavior, and a route back to the settings screen. If a game offers a narrated menu, enable it before exploring a large options list. When controls are unclear, use the platform’s current support instructions for the specific game and edition rather than relying on a guide for another version.

Find the route and remember the objective
Use navigation assistance
Navigation assistance can point toward a story route without solving every encounter. Depending on the game, it may take the form of a compass, an objective marker, a route line, a camera-facing command, or a reviewable objective list. The Last of Us Part II documents a story-path option that, after a button press, turns the camera toward the path needed to continue the story. That is different from an automatic walk or a map that reveals every secret: it supplies orientation when the player is lost.
Review objectives and narrative information
When a game permits objective review, revisit the task after a long pause or a failed attempt. Microsoft’s guidance recommends that tasks and objectives be clearly described and reviewable, along with ways to revisit narrative information. A journal, tutorial archive, subtitles log, or objective screen can reduce the need to remember a sentence heard during a busy scene.
Locate enemies and pickups
Enhanced listening can provide another way to locate objects that are difficult to see. The Last of Us Part II documents enhanced listening for enemies or pickups. This is a location aid, not a universal solution: it may reveal only certain categories of objects, work only while a mode is active, or carry a gameplay trade-off.
Remove movement and puzzle bottlenecks
Simplify traversal
Traversal assistance can reduce the number of precise inputs needed to climb, jump, balance, or move through an obstacle. The Last of Us Part II documents simplified traversal and ledge-related protection. Such options address an execution barrier while leaving the surrounding story and exploration intact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSkip an optional puzzle
Some games let players skip a puzzle after selecting an assistance option or interacting with the puzzle screen. The Last of Us Part II officially documents optional puzzle skipping. Skipping removes the obstacle entirely, so use it when the puzzle—not the story or exploration—is what prevents progress. It is not evidence that every game has a skip control.

Change the input burden
Search for hold-versus-toggle controls, simplified button layouts, repeated-button assistance, aim or camera assists, and remapping. Availability and naming differ widely. Change one input behavior, test it in a safe area, and confirm that it does not create a new problem elsewhere, such as an accidental activation during combat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Slow down timing and adjust challenge
Difficulty settings are not only about enemy health. They can affect the amount of time available to react, the strength of hints, damage taken, puzzle support, and how forgiving a failed input is. Microsoft’s Xbox guidance recommends a broad range of difficulty presets—“Ideally 4+”—as a guideline for offering meaningful choice. It is a design recommendation, not a study showing that four presets produce a measured comprehension improvement.
Xbox Wire’s May 15, 2025 announcement for DOOM: The Dark Ages describes difficulty modifiers, including game-speed changes that can be adjusted at any time during gameplay. That example demonstrates how an in-play control can help when the player understands an encounter but cannot process it at its default speed. Do not assume speed controls are standard across games; check the title’s current documentation.

How common options differ
| Option | Barrier addressed | Information channel | Typical level of assistance | Possible trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UI or subtitle resizing | Text is too small or tiring to read | Visual | Makes existing information legible | Large text can cover more of the screen |
| Icon sizing or contrast | Markers blend into the scene | Visual | Makes important objects easier to distinguish | Stronger colors or larger icons may add visual clutter |
| Captions for non-speech audio | Sound cues are missed | Text | Translates selected sounds into descriptions | Coverage varies and captions can become dense |
| Audio cues or menu narration | Visual prompts or focus are hard to perceive | Sound or speech | Adds a second route to selected information | Not every event or screen may be supported |
| Story-path or navigation aid | You are lost or unsure where to go | Camera, marker, or route guidance | Points toward progression | May reduce the need to explore independently |
| Enhanced listening | Enemies or pickups are hard to locate | Audio and visual highlighting | Reveals selected nearby targets | May work only in a specific mode or range |
| Simplified traversal | Movement sequences block progress | Input assistance | Reduces precision or timing demands | Can change how movement feels |
| Puzzle skipping | A puzzle prevents story progress | Progression control | Removes that puzzle obstacle | You lose the puzzle’s challenge and solution experience |
| Game-speed modifier | Action moves too quickly to interpret | Pacing | Gives more time during play | Timing and combat feel different from the default |
A practical setup process
- Open the settings route. Check the first-launch setup, pause menu, main menu, and platform accessibility panel. If you cannot reach the menu reliably, look for a narrated interface or a documented shortcut.
- Name the exact failure point. Write down whether you missed text, sound, a route, an objective, an input, or a timing window.
- Select the matching category. Start with text and contrast for reading, captions and cues for sound, navigation and objective review for orientation, traversal or remapping for input, and speed or difficulty modifiers for pacing.
- Change one setting. Play until the same type of situation appears again. One change makes the result easier to judge than a group of simultaneous changes.
- Check the trade-off. Confirm that larger text is not obscured, captions are not too dense, cues are not masking dialogue, and assistance is not introducing distracting markers.
- Revisit tutorials and objectives. Use an objective log, tutorial archive, narrative recap, or other review feature when available.
- Keep, refine, or undo it. Personal comfort is the deciding test. A setting that helps one player may be tiring or distracting for another.
- Verify exact labels. Consult the current official support page for the game, platform, and edition before following a detailed button sequence. Patches can move options or change their names.
Limits and common mistakes
- Assuming every game has the same menu: Accessibility categories and defaults differ, even between games on the same platform.
- Expecting one setting to solve every confusion: A larger subtitle cannot reveal an unmarked route, and a compass cannot make unreadable instructions legible.
- Turning on every assist at once: Multiple markers, captions, narration, and visual effects can create a new overload. Add options gradually.
- Treating a named example as a universal feature: The documented settings in God of War Ragnarök, The Last of Us Part II, and DOOM: The Dark Ages belong to those games. Other titles may use different controls or offer none of them.
- Ignoring edition and platform differences: A feature may be absent, renamed, or placed elsewhere in a different release.
- Confusing assistance with a guarantee: Accessibility options improve access to available information, but they cannot ensure that every mechanic, clue, or narrative implication becomes clear.
What to do when the game is still unclear
Separate an access problem from a design problem. If text remains unreadable after resizing, the issue may be font rendering or a display setting. If captions are present but omit the sound you need, the game may not caption that event. If navigation points to a destination but the objective itself is vague, an assistance marker cannot supply missing context.
Record the game name, platform, edition, version, the setting you changed, and the scene where confusion persists. Then check the game’s current official support documentation for known limitations and the exact scope of that option. This approach avoids assuming that a control documented for one release applies to another.
Accessibility settings work best as a personal toolkit: choose the channel that makes information available to you, adjust its intensity, and change it as the game’s demands change. The right setting is the one that lets you understand and enjoy the game without adding a different obstacle.
