A publishing gate can catch repeatable WordPress mistakes before a page goes live by turning editorial and technical rules into checks that pass or fail. In Pavlo Kazarian’s account of a Ukrainian- and Russian-language site, the most valuable check was translation parity: confirming not just that a second-language page existed, but that key details matched. The gate reduced a class of publishing errors; Kazarian does not claim it caused a traffic increase.
What a publishing gate checks
Kazarian describes a small custom command that accepts a page URL, fetches the public page and its WordPress REST API record, finds the corresponding language version, and runs registered checks. Each check returns a shared result format. The command reports the outcome and exits with a non-zero status if any check fails, allowing a failed run to block a release. The implementation uses Python, WordPress, Polylang, and the WordPress REST API; it is a site-specific setup, not a built-in WordPress feature. Kazarian’s account describes the approach.
The useful design principle is to make each rule a discrete check with an understandable result. A gate should examine both rendered output and structured CMS data when each can reveal a different kind of problem.
Why translation parity matters most
A translated page can be missing, or it can exist while disagreeing with its counterpart. Checking only for a translation URL catches the first problem, not the second. On Kazarian’s site, the parity check found more real issues than the other checks combined.

Compare fields readers depend on, such as contact details, offer or price information, calls to action, author information, headings, and whether an FAQ is present when required. Some of these fields should match exactly; others may be language-specific but still need to be present and equivalent in purpose. Define the expected relationship for each field rather than treating every difference as an error.
- Existence: Does each published page have the required language counterpart?
- Parity: Do important facts and required content agree across the pair?
- Review: Does a mismatch require an editor to decide what the correct translation or offer should be?
Automate the first two checks where the rule is clear. A missing translation or disputed wording needs editorial judgment; report it for review rather than generating or reconciling content silently.

Other rules in the example
Images and metadata
The gate checks that page images are no wider than 1600 pixels, use WebP, and have alt text and captions. Kazarian says some image fixes can be automated: download the image, resize and convert it, then write the updated metadata through the REST API. That automation should be guarded by an explicit repair option so it does not unexpectedly replace an editor’s work.

Typography
Selected dash characters and repeated non-breaking spaces are flagged. The rule reflects a site-specific issue: pasted typography had caused trouble in a narrow page grid and could indicate that text was pasted in without the expected cleanup. Such checks are useful when tied to a known content or rendering requirement; they should not become arbitrary style enforcement.
Redirect behavior
The redirect check follows the chain, verifies that it ends in HTTP 200, and rejects chains above the author’s configured threshold. Kazarian traces the rule to an incident involving relative redirect targets and cached 404 responses seen by logged-out visitors. The threshold itself is not stated in his account, so it should be set according to a site’s own policy.

WordPress output and reindexing
Kazarian notes that WordPress’s wpautop can rewrite markup, so checks should account for the HTML that WordPress actually produces rather than assuming the authored markup remains unchanged. He also automated reindexing for both language versions after publication. These are implementation lessons from his setup, not guarantees about every theme, plugin, or indexing workflow.

Build the gate as a safe pipeline
- Fetch: Accept a page URL and retrieve both its public HTML and relevant WordPress REST API data.
- Resolve the page pair: Identify the corresponding language version and distinguish a missing counterpart from a mismatch between existing pages.
- Run discrete checks: Keep each rule focused, deterministic where possible, and expressed in terms an editor or developer can act on.
- Report before repairing: Default to findings only. Require an explicit option to make automatic changes such as image conversion or metadata updates.
- Block deliberately: Make a failed high-confidence, release-critical rule return a non-zero exit status; keep lower-confidence findings in warning or review mode until false positives are understood.
- Log the run: Record the URL, checks performed, findings, any changes, the verdict, and any approved exceptions.
OWASP’s DevSecOps Guideline supports the broader policy-as-code practices of testing policies, explaining failures in actionable terms, beginning with audit or warning behavior, enforcing high-confidence rules after validating false positives, and maintaining an explicit, auditable exemption process. That guidance is general; it does not mean Kazarian’s gate uses OPA, Conftest, or Kubernetes controls.

What the reported outcome does—and does not—show
Kazarian reports that his site had zero pages existing in only one language and that both homepages scored 98 on mobile PageSpeed. These are figures he reports for his own site; the account does not provide an independent measurement record. He also says he cannot attribute traffic growth to the gate because other changes occurred during the same period. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the checks removed a class of repeatable mistakes, not that they establish a general SEO or traffic gain.
“Rules as code” has more than one meaning
The phrase also appears in domains beyond website operations. The MIT Computational Law Report describes “Rules as Code” as a contemporary label for work previously discussed as AI and Law, and identifies OpenFisca as an open-source Python application for encoding government benefits and tax rules. That public-policy and legal setting has different stakes from checking a site’s content, but it illustrates why the phrase should be understood from context.
