A research-stage sensor developed by researchers affiliated with the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), GyeongKuk National University, and DGIST measures magnetic-field components along three axes. It does not sense motion directly: motion can be inferred when a suitable magnet or other field source moves relative to the sensor and a system interprets the changing field.
What the three-axis sensor actually measures
The device is a three-axis planar Hall magnetoresistance (PHMR) sensor. It measures magnetic-field components along x, y, and z; it is not an accelerometer or a conventional inertial measurement unit. To use it for motion tracking, an application would need a suitable magnetic target, mechanics that relate movement to changing field, and processing to interpret those changes.
The work was reported by Jeon and colleagues in “Development of a Three-Axis Planar Hall Magnetoresistance Sensor Using a Superparamagnetic Nanoparticle-Based Flux Guide,” published in Advanced Functional Materials on 13 June 2026. The article abstract describes a laboratory sensor architecture, not a finished consumer product.

How the nanoparticle flux guide enables z-axis sensing
A planar PHMR sensor responds to magnetic-field components in its plane. The researchers added a superparamagnetic nanoparticle flux guide (SPMFG) to redirect an out-of-plane z-axis field into in-plane components the sensor can detect.

The guide consists of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles in an SU-8 matrix, printed onto the sensor array. Field-assisted curing can organize the particles into vertically aligned chains, forming a directionally enhanced path for magnetic flux. That added structure helps the planar sensor respond to the otherwise difficult-to-detect out-of-plane field.
Random particles versus aligned chains
The researchers compared guides with randomly dispersed particles and guides with chain-aligned particles. The configurations trade lower hysteresis against stronger z-axis response.

The sensitivity, conversion-ratio, and hysteresis figures are results reported for the researchers’ configurations, not general specifications for all PHMR sensors. The abstract notes that chain alignment produced the stronger response while introducing 0.3 mT residual hysteresis.

The team also demonstrated a multi-axis force-sensing module. An elastomer holding a permanent magnet sits above the sensor; when mechanical force deforms the elastomer, the magnetic field at the sensor changes. The setup resolves normal force and shear forces along three axes.

This shows how a magnetic-field sensor can support touch or force measurement when paired with suitable mechanical components. It is a laboratory demonstration, not evidence of a production-ready robotic fingertip, wearable, or medical device.

What to take away
- The sensor measures a three-dimensional magnetic field; it does not directly measure movement on its own.
