Yes—a coding assistant can help make a small Windows utility for a recurring annoyance, but the useful result depends on describing the task and the desired interaction precisely. How-To Geek writer Nick Lewis used Claude to create a tray app that let him switch a Sound Blaster PCIe card between stereo headphones and a 5.1 speaker setup. It made a repeated settings change more convenient; it did not stop Windows from resetting the configuration after reboots.
The Windows audio annoyance was specific—and recurring
Lewis says his sound card’s speaker configuration returned to 5.1 after PC reboots, even though he preferred stereo for headphones. Windows and driver updates had not resolved the behavior on his setup. He could change it manually through the legacy Sound settings: select the card, open its speaker configuration, and choose stereo.
He estimated that manual change took 10–15 seconds each time. Across years of repeating it, he put the accumulated time at several hours. Both figures are his personal estimates, not measured results or statistics that can be generalized to other Windows users.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA scheduled task that always forced stereo was not a good fit: sometimes he used his 5.1 speakers. The needed solution was not “set stereo and leave it there,” but an easy way to choose either mode when needed.

Why the first Claude attempt missed the mark
Lewis initially gave Claude instructions that were too broad. In his account, the first result was close to recreating the full Sound menu—far more than the small shortcut he wanted. He then added details about his operating system and hardware and explained the controls the utility should provide.
The lesson is practical: describe the specific annoyance, the environment it occurs in, and the smallest interaction that would make it easier. A concise brief could spell out:

- The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
- Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
- Find your signature sound: Scarlett 4th Gen's improved Air mode lifts vocals and guitars to the front of the mix, adding musical presence and rich harmonic drive to your recordings
- All you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins
- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Context: the relevant Windows setup and audio hardware.
- Current behavior: what resets, and when.
- Desired action: switch between stereo and 5.1 on demand.
- Interface: a simple tray control, rather than a recreation of Windows’ entire sound-settings interface.
That kind of detail gives an assistant a narrower target. It does not guarantee correct code or compatibility, but it helps avoid spending effort on features the user did not ask for.

Lewis says Claude worked for nearly 40 minutes before producing StereoTray. As he describes it, the app placed an icon in the system tray, changed the icon’s appearance to indicate the active mode, and switched modes on a left-click. A right-click menu offered access to sound settings and playback-device options.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
This is Lewis’s account of the utility’s behavior, not an independent test. His article does not provide the source code, exact sound-card model, precise Windows version, or enough implementation detail to establish whether the same utility would work on another PC. It also does not establish that StereoTray is available for download.
A one-click workaround is different from a system fix
StereoTray addressed the repeated interaction, not the underlying reset. Lewis says the configuration still reverted after a reboot; the app simply made it less tedious to switch back. That distinction matters when deciding whether to build a helper utility or keep troubleshooting the original cause.

- Get the best out of your Microphones - M-Track Duo’s transparent Crystal Preamps guarantee optimal sound from all your microphones including condenser mics

| Approach | What it offers | Trade-off in Lewis’s account |
|---|---|---|
| Change the setting manually | Choose the desired mode through Sound settings. | Requires repeating the settings navigation after the reset. |
| Use a scheduled task to force stereo | Automatically restore one preferred mode. | Would interfere when Lewis wanted to use 5.1 speakers. |
| Use an on-demand tray toggle | Make either mode available when needed. | Reduces friction but does not prevent the reset. |
For an annoyance with two legitimate states, an on-demand control can be more useful than automation that always chooses one. For a problem that needs to stop happening altogether, a convenience app should not be mistaken for a root-cause repair.

When this is a sensible use of an AI coding assistant
Lewis’s example is a good fit for a narrowly scoped experiment: the task was repetitive, the desired choices were clear, and a small interface could save repeated navigation. The satisfaction came from removing a minor irritation, not from solving a major technical problem. He also cautions against trusting an AI-generated utility for work- or health-critical needs; that is his judgment, and the account does not establish a formal safety standard.

For a personal helper, review what the generated program does before running it, especially if it needs elevated access or changes device settings. Keep a way to return to Windows’ normal controls, and treat the result as specific to the hardware and setup for which it was built unless it has been tested elsewhere.
The article’s example is useful as a method, not as a downloadable fix: define the repeated task, provide the relevant environment details, keep the feature request small, and judge success by whether the tool makes the task easier—not by assuming it repaired the underlying Windows behavior.
