A streaming DSD device is a network audio player that can receive DSD music files—typically from a NAS or computer—and play them through a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). It may include its own DAC or send digital audio to a separate one. The label alone does not guarantee support for every DSD file, rate, input, or online music service; those details depend on the specific playback path.

What “streaming DSD” means

DSD is a digital audio encoding based on pulse-density modulation. In this context, “streaming” usually means sending a DSD file over a local network from a computer or network-attached storage (NAS) to an audio player. It does not necessarily mean listening to DSD through a subscription music service.

The phrase “streaming DSD device” describes a function, not a standardized type of product. A network player may handle the files and connect to an external DAC, while a streamer-DAC combines network playback and digital-to-analog conversion in one unit. For example, TEAC documents DSD128 network playback from a NAS or PC on its NT-505-X; this is a model-specific network capability, not a guarantee about other inputs or services. TEAC NT-505-X specifications.

How a DSD file becomes sound

  1. Source: A DSD file is stored on a NAS or computer, or is otherwise made available to the player through a documented source.
  2. Player and software: A compatible network player or computer playback application reads the file and sends audio along a supported connection.
  3. DAC: A DSD-capable DAC converts the digital signal to analog. The DAC may be inside the network player or a separate component.
  4. Output: The analog signal goes to headphones, an amplifier, or speakers.

Common DSD file formats include DSF and DFF, also called DSDIFF. NativeDSD notes that DSF supports embedded tags, while DFF does not. Confirm that both the player and its software accept the format you intend to play. NativeDSD’s guide to playing its music files.

Native DSD, DoP, and PCM conversion

These terms describe different ways a DSD signal can travel from playback software or a source device to a DAC. They are not interchangeable guarantees of compatibility.

  • Native DSD: DSD data is sent to hardware in a native DSD mode. The source, connection, and DAC must support the relevant mode and rate.
  • DSD over PCM (DoP): DSD data is carried inside a PCM-framed stream. Compatible equipment recognizes and extracts the DSD data. The playback path must remain bit-perfect, and the software and DAC must both support DoP. The available DSD rate may be lower than the hardware’s maximum native rate.
  • PCM conversion: Playback software converts DSD to PCM before sending it to the DAC. This can make playback possible with a DAC that does not accept native DSD, but it is no longer native DSD playback.

XMOS documents native DSD and DoP as possible host-to-device approaches. XMOS: DSD over USB Audio.

What to check in a device’s specifications

Check Why it matters
Source and input Verify whether DSD playback works from a NAS or computer over the network, a USB input, or another specific source. A headline specification may apply to only one path.
Maximum DSD rate Check the maximum rate for the exact input or network mode you plan to use; rates can differ between connections.
File formats Confirm support for the file type you have, such as DSF or DFF/DSDIFF.
Playback and control Find out whether the unit plays files itself or depends on a computer, mobile app, driver, or compatible playback software.
DAC and signal handling Determine whether a DAC is built in or must be connected, and whether DSD is supported natively, through DoP, or only after conversion to PCM.

Specifications for one input do not establish what the same device can do over another. Denon, for example, lists DSD up to 11.2 MHz for the SACD 30n’s USB-DAC input; that figure describes that particular path, not universal DSD support across the unit’s sources. Denon SACD 30n specifications.

Does a streaming DSD device play DSD from an online service?

Not necessarily. The term often refers to playback of DSD files stored on a local network, such as on a NAS or computer. A device’s ability to play those files does not establish that it supports DSD from a subscription service. Check the documentation for the specific service and input if online playback is what you need.
