A South Florida woman’s emergency-room evaluation for persistent hives led to imaging that unexpectedly revealed a brain aneurysm. The hives were reported as unrelated to the aneurysm: they prompted the visit, but were not a warning sign or cause. Follow-up imaging later showed the aneurysm had grown, and doctors treated it with a catheter-based procedure.
How the emergency visit led to an unexpected finding
Local 10 reported that Martha Hernandez went to the emergency room after a persistent rash. CBS Miami says she also woke with a severe migraine and elevated blood pressure. During the evaluation at Baptist Hospital, imaging revealed an aneurysm in the basilar artery, a major vessel at the back of the brain. The reports do not provide the exact imaging sequence or measurements.
The distinction matters: CBS Miami explicitly reported that Hernandez’s hives were unrelated to the aneurysm. The rash brought her to the hospital, where the evaluation uncovered an unexpected finding; it was not an aneurysm symptom.

According to CBS Miami, clinicians initially recommended routine monitoring because the aneurysm was small. A follow-up test two months later showed significant growth. Interventional neuroradiologist Dr. Guilherme Dabus told the station the team was concerned enough to admit Hernandez for treatment the following day.

The coverage does not give the aneurysm’s dimensions, imaging details, or the full clinical reasoning behind the decision. It therefore cannot establish a general rule for when an aneurysm should be treated. CBS Miami notes that many small, unruptured aneurysms can be monitored and that finding one does not automatically mean a procedure is necessary.
What treatment and recovery were reported
The reports describe a catheter-based treatment performed from inside a blood vessel. Local 10 reported that the aneurysm is now completely closed and that Hernandez has returned to activities she enjoys. The available reports do not establish her long-term follow-up or provide further procedural details.

Hernandez told CBS Miami, “I’m very grateful to be here.” Local 10 also quoted her expressing gratitude to Dabus and the care team.
What this story does—and does not—say about hives
This is a story about an unexpected imaging finding during an emergency evaluation, not evidence that hives indicate a brain aneurysm. The reports do not suggest that people with a rash should seek brain imaging because of aneurysm risk. Nor does Hernandez’s experience mean every unruptured aneurysm requires intervention; in her reported case, follow-up imaging showed growth, and her doctors decided to treat it.

CBS Miami attributes to Dabus the estimate that 2% to 3% of the population has a brain aneurysm, and its headline says “1 in 50 Americans” have an undetected one. Those figures are estimates attributed to the physician in the news report; the original statistical source is not identified there, so they should not be read as independently verified figures here.
CBS Miami also reports Dabus’s advice to control blood pressure and avoid smoking. A home blood-pressure monitor can track blood pressure, but it cannot screen for, diagnose, or prevent an aneurysm. Anyone with concerns about their own symptoms or risk should discuss them with a clinician rather than use this case as a self-triage guide.
