A button press starts the Vomit Comic Robot: a Raspberry Pi runs software that chooses a comic layout, fills its panels with randomly selected hand-drawn images, saves the finished comic, and sends it to a thermal receipt printer. The pictures are random, but the panel arrangement encourages people to imagine a story.

How the robot makes and prints a comic

  1. A visitor presses the button. The input starts a generation-and-print cycle, while LEDs provide part of the physical interaction.
  2. Processing builds the page. The sketch selects a comic layout and places images from Cadin Batrack’s library of drawings into its panels. The original collection was reported to contain about 100 drawings. Image data helps fit drawings to panel dimensions; Batrack’s project page says an image larger than its panel is cropped.
  3. Python connects the pieces. A Python script manages the button and LEDs, communicates with the Processing sketch, loads the completed image, and sends it to the printer.
  4. The Pi saves and prints the result. The composite is saved as a PNG on the Raspberry Pi’s SD card and sent to a USB thermal receipt printer. The documented prints include the date, comic number, and event name.

The build described in Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s project feature uses a Raspberry Pi 3, a USB mini thermal receipt printer, LEDs, a button, and a laser-cut plywood enclosure. The image-generation sketch is written in Processing, with Python handling input and printer communication.

Why random panels can still feel like a story

The machine does not need to write a plot for the comic to feel narrative. A sequence of panels puts images beside and after one another, so readers naturally look for cause, reaction, and continuity. Batrack described the effect this way: “Although images are selected and placed randomly, the comic panel format suggests relationships between elements. Our minds create a story where there is none in an attempt to explain visuals created by a non-intelligent machine.”

That open-endedness is central to the project: each print is a small, take-home artifact, and its meaning is partly supplied by the person reading it.

What you need to recreate the idea

The documented build gives component categories, not a complete, currently verified shopping list. Its core elements are:

  • A Raspberry Pi to run the generation and control software. The documented machine used a Raspberry Pi 3; the project sources do not establish which current board is best.
  • A USB thermal receipt printer and matching paper.
  • A button and LEDs for the visitor controls and feedback.
  • An enclosure, documented as laser-cut plywood.
  • Processing and Python code, plus a collection of drawings and the data used to fit them into panels.

The project descriptions do not identify the printer’s brand or model, paper width, or a verified list of replacement parts. Before buying a printer for a recreation, confirm that its host connection, supported image format, paper size, and driver workflow will work with the software and enclosure you plan to use. The original build’s use of USB is a useful starting point, not proof that every USB receipt printer is compatible.

Ways to adapt the comic printer

Use your own drawings

Batrack described the project as replicable with the comic-generating code and intended for makers to add their own images. A new drawing library can change the look and subject matter without changing the basic idea: select a layout, place images in its panels, save the composite, and print it.

Consider themes as a future extension

Batrack mentioned a dial that could let visitors choose themes such as food, animals, or nature. That was an idea for a possible future version, not a feature of the documented build. A themed version would need some way to group or filter the image library before panel selection.

Simplify the machine for other printouts

The magazine feature notes that printing content other than randomly generated comics could be simpler because it would not need the Processing sketch. A project that prints a prepared image could focus on loading that image and delivering it through the printer workflow.

What the project is—and is not—documented to prove

The project pages describe a working event-oriented comic printer and its software flow, but they do not provide printer performance measurements, a complete replacement-parts specification, or comparative tests of receipt printers. Treat the Raspberry Pi 3 and printer setup as the historically documented implementation, not as a guarantee that an unverified modern printer will work without adaptation.
