A point-of-sale (POS) system can help increase retail sales by turning each transaction into usable information and by giving staff tools to act on it. The four highest-value uses are keeping proven products in stock, using reports to improve merchandising and selling, making relevant follow-up easier, and connecting store and online orders so customers have more ways to complete a purchase.
A POS is not an automatic sales-growth engine. Results depend on accurate product and customer records, sensible operating rules, staff adoption, supplier availability, and the quality of the decisions you make from the data.
What a POS system actually contributes to sales
At checkout, a POS can connect payment with the products sold, quantities, prices, discounts, inventory changes, customer record, location, and employee who handled the transaction. The exact fields depend on the system, plan, integrations, and your setup. That connection gives a retailer a common record for decisions that are otherwise scattered across receipts, spreadsheets, an ecommerce dashboard, and staff recollection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the system to ask specific operating questions: Which products sell fastest? When will a bestseller need replenishing? Which products sit too long? What is the average basket? Which shifts or selling approaches produce larger baskets? Which customers opted in to hear from you, and what would be genuinely useful to them? Can an order be shipped or collected elsewhere when the item is not available at the counter?
#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
The answers do not prove that a particular display, promotion, or employee caused a sales change. They give you a repeatable way to form a hypothesis, make a controlled change, and compare results over a defined period.
1. Keep bestsellers available and reduce slow stock
Lost sales often begin with an empty shelf. A POS can update on-hand quantities when transactions are processed, show low-stock conditions, and report sell-through or inventory movement. Some systems also suggest replenishment quantities using recent sales and stockout history. This makes a fast-moving item visible earlier than a weekly manual count might.
Build a dependable replenishment workflow
- Clean the product record. Give every sellable item a unique SKU or barcode, correct unit of measure, cost, selling price, supplier, and reorder point. Variants such as size or color need separate records if they are stocked separately.
- Set a review rule. Decide how often someone checks low-stock alerts and which employee owns the review. A notification that nobody acts on will not protect a sale.
- Compare demand with lead time. A reorder point should reflect normal sales during the supplier’s lead time, plus a buffer appropriate to your cash and storage limits. A system’s suggested quantity is a starting point, not an instruction to buy.
- Check exceptions. Investigate negative quantities, duplicate SKUs, returns, damaged goods, transfers, and unreceived purchase orders. These errors can make a supposedly available product appear in stock or hide a real shortage.
- Record the decision. Note why an order was increased, delayed, substituted, or discontinued. Reviewing those choices later helps refine reorder rules.
Use slow-stock information without creating needless discounts
Inventory reports can identify products with few sales over a chosen period, high days of supply, or repeated markdowns. First check whether the item is seasonal, newly launched, displayed poorly, or missing a complete product description. Then choose an action: move it beside a complementary bestseller, create a carefully priced bundle, train staff on its use, return it where supplier terms allow, or mark it down before its value deteriorates. Do not treat every slow item as a pricing problem; over-discounting can reduce margin and teach customers to wait.
Low-stock alerts and reorder prompts support decisions; they do not guarantee that a supplier has inventory, that a shipment arrives on time, or that customers will buy the replenished product. You still need reliable counts, sensible reorder rules, supplier communication, and enough working capital.
2. Use POS reports to improve products, baskets, schedules, and selling
A sales report is most useful when it changes a decision. Depending on the system and plan, you may be able to view sales by product, category, time period, location, channel, or staff member. Common basket measures include average order value (AOV) and average items per transaction. Together, these views show not only what sold, but when and under which conditions.

Metrics that answer practical retail questions
| Question | Useful POS view | Decision it can inform |
|---|---|---|
| What should receive more space or visibility? | Units and net sales by product and category | Adjust assortment, shelf position, displays, or reorder priority. |
| When do we need the most coverage? | Sales by hour, day, and date range | Schedule staff for traffic and selling opportunities rather than using identical shifts every day. |
| Are customers buying complete solutions? | AOV, items per transaction, and commonly co-purchased items | Test bundles, add-on prompts, or a better product-comparison display. |
| Which selling practices deserve coaching? | Sales, AOV, units per transaction, and conversion-related measures by staff member, where available | Share effective behaviors and coach gaps without treating one metric as a complete performance judgment. |
| Did a change coincide with better results? | Comparable periods before and after a merchandising or promotion change | Keep, revise, or stop a test while accounting for seasonality and other changes. |
Shopify’s POS analytics documentation describes net sales, AOV, and average items per order; its in-app Daily Sales view requires the POS Pro plan. Plan limits matter: a report you cannot access at your current tier cannot support a routine you have promised to run. Check current plan details before choosing a system.
Turn a report into a merchandising test
- Choose one measurable problem, such as a low attach rate for a product that should be bought with a bestseller.
- Record a baseline for a defined period: units per transaction, AOV, units of the target item, and gross margin if available.
- Make one primary change, such as placing the items together, adding a clear comparison card, or training staff on one useful question.
- Keep price and stock conditions as stable as practical. Note holidays, local events, promotions, weather, and stockouts that could distort the comparison.
- Review the same measures after the test period. A higher AOV with fewer transactions may not be an improvement; inspect revenue, margin, and customer experience together.
Lightspeed describes sales-by-hour, staff-performance, and upsell-opportunity reporting. These views can help you place experienced coverage at busy times and identify a specific add-on conversation to practice. They do not establish that one employee or one time slot caused a result; use them as prompts for observation and coaching.

Use staff data fairly
Explain what is measured, how returns and shared tills are handled, and which factors employees can control. Compare like-for-like shifts and roles. A staff member working peak hours or handling high-value categories will naturally have a different sales mix from someone on a quiet shift. Use the data to improve staffing and skills, not to create a misleading leaderboard.
3. Make relevant recommendations and bring customers back
When a customer profile is associated with a purchase, staff may be able to see prior products, preferences, sizes, or service notes that the customer has agreed to share. That context can make a recommendation more useful than a generic upsell: a replacement for a consumable, an accessory that fits a prior purchase, or an update in a category the customer has shown interest in.
Use customer data with permission and restraint
- Ask for the information you need and explain its purpose at collection.
- Obtain the consent required for promotional email or text messages in the jurisdictions where you operate.
- Give customers an easy way to change preferences or unsubscribe.
- Limit staff access to the customer information necessary for the job, and protect accounts with strong passwords and role-based permissions.
- Do not infer sensitive characteristics or send a message that reveals private information to someone who did not expect it.
Design follow-up that earns a response
Segment customers by a useful, observable behavior: a recent purchase that may need replenishment, a category interest, a lapsed visit, or loyalty status. Send one relevant message with a clear reason to return. A service reminder, care instruction, early access to a product that matches a stated interest, or an invitation to a useful event can protect margin better than a blanket discount.

Measure delivery, opt-outs, visits, repeat purchases, margin, and redemption—not just message volume. Repeated irrelevant texts or constant discounts can reduce trust and train customers to wait for a lower price. A loyalty program is valuable when its reward structure is understandable, financially sustainable, and tied to behavior you want to encourage.

Feature names, consent controls, and available integrations vary by plan and region, so verify the current configuration before promising a campaign.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Give customers more ways to complete the purchase
A connected POS can synchronize store and online product, inventory, and order information. If the preferred item is not available at the counter, staff may be able to offer pickup at another location, delivery, or shipping to the customer’s address. An online catalog can also let a shopper continue a purchase after leaving the store.
Set up the operational pieces first
- Define the source of truth. Decide where product details, prices, tax rules, and available quantities are maintained, and document who can change them.
- Map locations and fulfillment rules. Assign stock to each store or warehouse and specify whether an order can be routed, transferred, shipped, or collected.
- Test the inventory buffer. Keep a small safety buffer for items that are counted manually or shared between channels so an online order does not promise stock already reserved in store.
- Train the handoff. Staff need a script for checking availability, collecting payment, confirming delivery details, and explaining the expected timing.
- Reconcile exceptions daily. Review cancellations, substitutions, failed payments, returns, and orders waiting for pickup.
Convenience can capture demand that would otherwise be abandoned, but it adds fulfillment cost and customer-service work. A channel is only useful when inventory accuracy, packing, delivery or pickup capacity, and communication are reliable.

Lightspeed states that its Insights capabilities are limited to selected plans. Shopify’s Daily Sales analytics requires POS Pro. Those restrictions illustrate why a feature checklist is not enough: confirm that the specific report, automation, and number of registers you need are included in the plan you can afford.
What reported results do—and do not—prove
Vendor examples can illustrate what a coordinated system might enable, but they are not a promise of typical performance. Shopify reported that retailer Elite Eleven achieved 82% total revenue growth and a 240% increase in retail POS sales after moving to a unified Shopify platform. Those figures are a company example, and the vendor article does not isolate the causal effect of POS software from other business changes.
The same Shopify material attributes an average 5% gross merchandise value uplift to a leading independent research firm’s finding about Shopify POS combined with integrated inventory, headquarters productivity, and marketing effectiveness. Shopify’s material does not name the firm or link the underlying study, so treat the figure as a Shopify-attributed claim rather than independently verified evidence.
Lightspeed’s analytics page presents vendor-claimed outcomes of a 25.4% higher gross margin return on investment, $4,457 more monthly gross profit, and 26% fewer days out of stock for top-selling items. Lightspeed’s analytics page does not state the study date, sample, or methodology; do not generalize those numbers to every retailer.

Doug Waldbueser, cofounder of The Inspiration Company, told Shopify, “Having one system to manage our inventory and staff is a huge benefit for our brand.” Shopify says his team uses reports to track employee sales, AOV, and units per transaction. Anne Rutt-Enriquez, owner of Limbo Jewelry, told Lightspeed, “They say we’re the most organized store they work with because we’re able to pinpoint exactly what’s selling, exactly what’s not selling.” Both are vendor-published testimonials, not independent estimates of a typical result.
A practical 30-day rollout
- Days 1–7: establish clean inputs. Audit SKUs, barcodes, prices, costs, supplier lead times, stock counts, employee accounts, and customer-consent settings.
- Days 8–14: create a baseline. Export product sales, stockouts, slow-stock value, AOV, items per transaction, and sales by hour for a comparable period.
- Days 15–21: run one inventory and one basket test. Set a reorder review cadence, improve one display or bundle, and document stock and sales conditions.
- Days 22–30: add one customer or channel workflow. Send a consent-based, relevant follow-up or pilot pickup/shipping for a limited assortment. Track operational errors as well as revenue.
After the first month, keep the routines that produce a measurable improvement in sales, margin, availability, customer response, or staff efficiency. Revise any routine that creates more work than value, and continue testing one material change at a time.
