A pixel clock becomes part of a smart home when it does more than show the time: it puts a small, glanceable piece of useful information where people will actually see it. What it can display—and how it connects—depends on the clock and its software. The Ulanzi TC001 is one example, not a confirmed identification of the clock in this story.
What makes a pixel clock feel like part of the home?
A conventional clock answers one question: what time is it? A programmable pixel display can also show things such as weather, a timer, a countdown, or custom icons. Ulanzi lists those functions for its TC001 Smart Pixel Clock, alongside Home Assistant, ESPHome, and AWTRIX options. Those are manufacturer-described capabilities, not proof that every feature is enabled out of the box or that every setup works the same way. Ulanzi TC001 product information
The useful idea is broader than any one model: a small display can make selected smart-home information visible without requiring someone to open an app or look at a larger screen. The right display is the one that presents information its household cares about, in a place where a quick glance is convenient.
Two different routes to smart-home information
There is an important difference between features supplied by a manufacturer and capabilities added through community software or a custom integration. A product listing may describe support for a platform or firmware, while an individual project shows one person’s working arrangement. Neither guarantees identical compatibility, setup effort, or ongoing maintenance for every owner.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Route | What the cited source establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Ulanzi TC001 options | Ulanzi describes Home Assistant and ESPHome paths and points to AWTRIX; it also lists clock, weather, timer, countdown, stopwatch, and custom-icon functions. | That every feature is stock, plug-and-play, or available in every configuration. The manufacturer says advanced modes are aimed at enthusiasts. |
| TC001 with AWTRIX 3 and Home Assistant | Kevin Cossaboon’s post, published June 14, 2026, documents a TC001 running AWTRIX 3 firmware v0.98 and exchanging data with Home Assistant through MQTT; his example sends RSS headlines to the clock. | That this is the title’s author’s device or setup, or that every TC001 installation uses the same arrangement. |
| Divoom Pixoo integration | A community-maintained Home Assistant integration describes rendering an adaptive 16×16 clock and sending images to Pixoo displays over Bluetooth. Its maintainer says it was tested with the original 16×16 Pixoo. | A manufacturer-supported feature or an independent compatibility guarantee. The maintainer says larger Pixoo displays use only a 16×16 area for this clock. |

What an AWTRIX and Home Assistant setup can look like
Cossaboon’s June 14, 2026 project is a concrete example rather than a universal recipe. It uses a TC001 running AWTRIX 3 firmware v0.98, a Home Assistant installation, and an MQTT broker. In that arrangement, Home Assistant publishes RSS headlines for display. The example shows how a clock can become an endpoint for selected information, but it should not be mistaken for a stock configuration or a step-by-step guarantee for other hardware.

Before choosing a similar route, check which parts your intended setup actually requires: compatible display hardware, the firmware or integration path, a Home Assistant instance, and—in this documented example—an MQTT broker. Then decide what information belongs on the display. A clock is most useful when its screen stays focused on a few glanceable items rather than becoming a miniature dashboard that is hard to read at a distance.
How to choose an approach
- Start with the display model. Confirm the exact device before following instructions; a TC001 firmware route and a Pixoo Bluetooth integration are not interchangeable.
- Separate built-in functions from custom integration. Manufacturer-listed clock and timer functions are different from information delivered through Home Assistant, MQTT, or a community integration.
- Match complexity to your comfort level. Ulanzi describes advanced modes as aimed at enthusiasts. A custom firmware or integration route may involve more configuration than using the clock’s ordinary functions.
- Check the details of the specific software path. For Pixoo, the repository describes Bluetooth image delivery and a 16×16 adaptive clock; for the cited TC001 project, Home Assistant communicates through MQTT.
- Plan for power as well as software. Ulanzi recommends a Type-C cable for daily use and says the backup battery provides five hours of runtime. These are manufacturer statements, not independent measurements.
The personal part is specific to each household
Product documentation and public project posts can explain what a device or integration may do; they cannot identify the clock in a particular home or explain why it became meaningful there. A first-person account should name the actual model and firmware, the smart-home services involved, what appears on the display, and the moment it started feeling useful. Without those details, a specific story about installation frustrations, daily routines, or emotional significance would be guesswork.
