Wildlife photographer Brad Leue photographed a King Island scrubtit at Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s Boulder Wildlife Sanctuary, then sent two sharp images to AWC’s science team, which confirmed the identification. The encounter happened on his fifth day at the sanctuary. Digital Camera World reports that he used a Canon EOS R5 and a 100-500mm super-telephoto lens; AWC’s account confirms the sighting but does not identify the camera or lens.
What bird did Brad Leue photograph?
It was a King Island scrubtit, a subspecies found on King Island, Tasmania. Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) describes it as critically endangered and strongly associated with Melaleuca swamp forest in this part of the island.
Leue, an AWC Photographer and Videographer, had analyzed recorded sightings to choose promising locations during a seven-day visit to Boulder Wildlife Sanctuary. On day five, as he moved along the edge of forest near the coast, a small bird emerged from dense paperbark. He captured two sharp images and sent them to AWC’s science team for confirmation. AWC estimated that fewer than 100 King Island scrubtits remain in its 1 October 2026 report. That is the organization’s estimate, not a verified census figure: the report does not state the method behind the estimate or an uncertainty range. AWC’s 2026 report

The rarity helps explain Leue’s uncertainty even after making the photographs. He said, “I was confident that I’d photographed the right species but given how rare they are, I also had a bit of doubt.” AWC’s science team’s confirmation turned the images into a documented identification rather than relying on the photographer’s confidence alone.
What camera and lens did he use?
Digital Camera World reports that Leue used a Canon EOS R5 and a 100-500mm super-telephoto lens. AWC’s account confirms the photographs and identification but does not name the equipment, so the camera and lens details come from Digital Camera World’s reporting, not AWC. This is context about Leue’s setup, not a camera test or a comparison. The accounts do not establish that the EOS R5 or lens alone made the photographs possible, nor do they provide comparative autofocus, reach, or image-quality results.

The confirmed images contribute information about an exceptionally small population. AWC Senior Science Communicator Joey Clarke said, “With such a tiny population of King Island Scrubtits remaining, every skerrick of information is significant.” The sighting is one documented encounter; it does not, by itself, establish a population trend or change the population estimate.

AWC identifies several concerns for the subspecies: cat predation, habitat loss, inappropriate fire regimes, loss of genetic diversity, and potential exposure to H5N1. These are conservation threats described by AWC, not evidence that the individual Leue photographed was harmed. He also described finding evidence of an introduced predator a short distance from the bird, saying the contrast brought home “just how fragile their future is.” AWC’s account of the species and its threats
