An AI agent can access a paid API without a human creating an account or copying an API key: the server can return an HTTP 402 payment challenge, accept a signed payment authorization, and provide the requested data after settlement. In a September 9, 2026 article, API builder Keita Emsden describes using that pattern for an Australian company lookup service. In his words, “The payment is the credential.”
What the account-free API does
Emsden says he built the service so an autonomous agent could look up Australian companies by ABN, ACN, or name without an account, API key, dashboard, or free tier. The reported price is US$0.01 per successful lookup, paid in USDC over Base. Those are claims in Emsden’s September 2026 account, not independently confirmed details about the service’s current availability or behavior. Read Emsden’s account.
Rather than authenticate a user before every request, the service reportedly treats a payment authorization as the credential. The server returns a machine-readable payment challenge when the request arrives unpaid; the client authorizes the specified payment and retries.

- Request the record. The client sends an unpaid lookup request and receives HTTP 402 with payment requirements.
- Authorize the payment. The client signs an EIP-3009
transferWithAuthorizationfor the stated USDC amount. - Retry the same request. The client resends the lookup with a
PAYMENT-SIGNATUREheader. - Verify and settle. The server forwards the authorization to an x402 facilitator for verification and settlement on Base.
- Return the result. If the lookup succeeds, the API returns the company record and a settlement hash in a
PAYMENT-RESPONSEheader.
Emsden says the server does not hold a private key or pay gas. The article describes this implementation; it does not establish that every x402 service works the same way.

What the implementation reveals about x402 integrations
Handle protocol versions deliberately
Emsden reports that the service exposes an x402 v1 challenge in its JSON body and a v2 challenge in a header. The versions differ in network naming, schema, and the field used for the payment amount: maxAmountRequired in v1 and amount in v2. His compatibility approach was to publish both amount keys with matching values. That is a project-specific choice, not a universal requirement.
Match the facilitator’s accepted payload
In Emsden’s account, his first paid request failed when the facilitator returned HTTP 400 for the client’s v2-shaped envelope. He says he fixed the integration by sending a v1-shaped request for facilitator verification and relying on the facilitator’s own payment terms rather than trusting requirements supplied by the caller. The facilitator is not identified, so this should be read as one reported integration failure—not a general limitation of facilitators.

Publish discovery metadata where catalogues can read it
Emsden says a facilitator catalogue indexed the API after its first settlement, but listed only a URL and price. Discovery details published through the v2 extension did not appear there because the settlement flow forwarded a v1-shaped document. He reports publishing the discovery information through both channels and validating the extension against the facilitator’s schema. The practical lesson is to check which metadata format the discovery path actually consumes.
Design payment failures so clients know what to do
Do not claim a payment failed when its status is uncertain
A timeout can leave a client unsure whether settlement happened. Emsden says an earlier version incorrectly returned charged: false in this situation. His reported change stores the response before settlement and uses the payment authorization nonce as an idempotency key. When settlement is ambiguous, the API instead returns charged: "unknown" and instructs the client to retry the identical request with the same authorization, not sign a new one. This is a described reliability design, not an independently tested guarantee.

Make unsuccessful lookups non-billable
Emsden says a query with no matching company returns 404 without a charge, leaving the authorization available for reuse. He also reports binding retrieval to both the query and payer signature, and fixing a bug that treated the string "false" as a successful settlement result. These safeguards matter because a payment-enabled API must distinguish a valid record retrieval from a missing result and must interpret settlement status correctly.
Know what company data the lookup represents
Emsden reports a dataset of 4,008,800 companies sourced from an ASIC Company Register dataset on data.gov.au, licensed under CC BY 3.0 AU. He describes it as a weekly snapshot, not the official register, and identifies ASIC Connect as authoritative. Treat the count and refresh description as figures from his September 2026 article, not independently verified current dataset statistics. For decisions requiring authoritative or up-to-date company information, consult ASIC Connect rather than treating a snapshot API as the official record.
What this approach changes—and what it does not
Payment-based access can remove account creation, key distribution, and dashboard setup from a machine-to-machine transaction. It does not remove integration work: clients still need to interpret the challenge, create a valid authorization, handle facilitator compatibility, and recover safely from uncertain settlement. Nor does payment establish that the returned data is authoritative or current; that depends on the source and its update schedule.
Emsden’s account is a concrete example, not evidence of adoption, uptime, speed, or a broader market trend. His stated price, supported network, endpoint behavior, and operational details have not been independently verified as current.
