A one-pass color printer produces a color page as the media makes one traversal through the print engine, rather than building the page through repeated passes over it. The phrase describes how an engine works, not a single universal printer type: it can refer to fixed-head inkjet systems or tandem color laser systems, which use different mechanisms.
How one-pass inkjet printing works
In a scanning inkjet printer, a carriage moves back and forth across the paper, laying down ink as it makes successive sweeps. In a single-pass inkjet design, rows of fixed printheads span the media width. The media advances beneath them, and the heads print across it without a carriage sweeping side to side. Canon describes this method as suited to high-speed, high-productivity industrial applications; that description should not be taken as a claim about every printer that uses the term Canon’s explanation of continuous-feed printers.
What “single-pass” means in color laser printing
The term is also used for tandem color laser engines. Earlier color laser designs could rotate the page through the engine four times, once for each color. Tandem designs apply the color components during one traversal of the paper. The implementation is different from a full-width inkjet head array, even though both uses of “single-pass” describe making the color page without repeated color passes over the media. An InfoTrends white paper hosted by Xerox, dated January 2008, says tandem single-pass color laser engines had reached the market by 2000.
“One pass” does not mean one color station or one colorant. Color laser printing uses four CMYK colors—cyan, magenta, yellow and black—and a laser engine may have a drum for each. Canon’s laser printer technology overview describes the four drums and the scanner configuration that directs beams toward them.

What the term tells you—and what it does not
The term identifies an aspect of the print mechanism. It does not, by itself, establish a printer’s speed, image quality, running cost, or suitability for a particular job. Those depend on the specific device, its configuration, media and workload. The available sources do not provide a controlled comparison between the inkjet and laser architectures, so neither can be called universally faster, cheaper or better on the basis of “one-pass” alone.
- Check the engine: Is the printer a fixed-head inkjet or a tandem color laser?
- Match it to the work: Consider print volume, media type and intended application.
- Compare device specifications: Check the exact model’s rated speed, image-quality details, supported media and configuration rather than relying on the architecture label.
A commercial inkjet example, not a category benchmark
A 2018 Canon / Océ brochure describes a commercial single-pass wide-format inkjet arrangement with five fixed heads covering the media width. The media moves beneath the heads, which cover it edge to edge in one pass. The brochure says the described technology can produce “over 600 square meters (6,400 square feet)” of technical drawings, maps or high-end posters in an hour. That is a vendor claim about this Océ technology, not a general performance figure for one-pass printers (Canon / Océ brochure, 2018).

Bottom line for the terminology
“One-pass color printer” means the color page is produced as the media travels through the engine once. To understand what a particular printer does, identify whether the term refers to an inkjet or laser design, then judge the device by its own specifications and intended workload.
