When a request matches a Netlify Edge Function route, Netlify says it now stays inside Netlify’s network for execution: an edge node forwards it to an internal compute node, which runs the function in a Firecracker MicroVM. Netlify reports a 5–6 ms median for a warm function invocation on the new infrastructure, but that is not the time for an entire page to load. Here is how the request moves through the system, what keeps execution warm, and what the reported numbers measure.

What happens to a request when it hits a Netlify Edge Function?

The path has several stages: the edge node terminates TLS and checks the deploy’s routes; Netlify identifies the function service and selects a compute node; that node finds or prepares the required images and MicroVM; then the function runs and its result rejoins Netlify’s request chain. Netlify’s September 29, 2026 announcement describes this as an internal execution path, replacing an earlier path that sent matched requests outside Netlify’s network to a hosted execution service and brought them back.

1. The edge node matches the route

A request arrives at the Netlify edge node closest to the client, where TLS is terminated and the request path is checked against Edge Function routes in the active deploy. If no route matches, the request follows the ordinary path toward cache and origin. If one matches, the edge node forwards the request to a compute node within Netlify’s network. Netlify’s architecture announcement describes the change as moving execution onto that internal path rather than making the earlier trip to a hosted execution service.

2. The edge node identifies the service

Before forwarding, the edge node creates a machine specification naming three images: the runtime, Netlify’s platform image, and the customer’s Edge Function image. It also sets CPU, memory, and connection limits. A hash of the specification, combined with site-specific information, creates a service ID. That identity prevents deploys with different code or environment variables from sharing a MicroVM, which Netlify describes as an isolation property.

3. A compute node finds or prepares the service

The selected compute node checks for an existing service with that ID. If one exists, it forwards the request into the service’s MicroVM. If not, the node creates the service and checks whether its images are already on disk. Missing images are fetched from the edge node; Netlify says this means a region fetches only images for functions receiving traffic there.

4. Node affinity helps keep execution warm

Netlify uses rendezvous hashing to make a given service tend to land on the same compute node. Reusing a node can keep the MicroVM warm and the function code on disk and in cache, reducing cold starts. There is a capacity trade-off: too much stickiness can concentrate a popular service on one node. Netlify says it relaxes affinity above a threshold and distributes the service over a slice of nodes to absorb spikes and limit interference with other services. When a function reaches a node for the first time, that node must fetch and cache its code, so the first request there incurs that cost.

5. The function runs in a MicroVM

Each Edge Function runs in its own Firecracker MicroVM. Netlify reports that MicroVM creation takes under a millisecond and that start time is about 2 ms at p99. Its announcement describes a stripped-down Linux environment and an uncompressed EROFS image that is mounted and memory-mapped, so the system reads bundle portions as they are used rather than requiring the whole bundle to be read first.

Netlify says it takes a snapshot after the JavaScript server begins listening. An idle MicroVM can scale to zero; a later invocation starts from a snapshot, which is also memory-mapped rather than read fully into memory before use. Netlify credits Unikraft’s product with managing boot, snapshot, restore, and scale-to-zero lifecycle operations.

6. The result rejoins the request chain

An Edge Function can return a response directly, redirect, rewrite to a same-site URL, modify a downstream response as middleware, or continue the chain. The Edge Functions API documentation says an empty return or undefined continues the chain. After Edge Functions for the initial path have run, Netlify evaluates redirect rules and proceeds to static content or a serverless function as applicable. A direct response ends the chain. Calling context.next() is useful when downstream content is needed, but it adds latency.

What Netlify’s faster-invocation figures measure

Netlify’s September 29, 2026 announcement reports a warm invocation median of about 5–6 ms on the new infrastructure, compared with 25–40 ms on the previous infrastructure. Netlify defines the warm invocation as routing to a compute node, entering the MicroVM, running the function, and producing response headers. It also says the full warm path adds about 6 ms. These are Netlify-reported figures, not independently replicated measurements.

Netlify-reported measure What the announcement says How to interpret it
Warm invocation latency About 5–6 ms median (p50), versus 25–40 ms on the previous infrastructure Measures the function invocation path Netlify defines, not full page-load time.
p99 invocations 47.4% faster A vendor-reported tail-latency comparison; the announcement’s claim is about invocations.
Availability 99.998% A vendor-reported availability figure.
Log delivery 5x faster Applies to Edge Function log delivery, not request execution or page loading.
Cold invocations About 1.2% of invocations; image fetch averages about 9 ms Netlify describes a cold case as a request reaching a region where no compute node has seen the function before.
Daily volume About one billion Edge Functions run each day Operational context stated by Netlify, not an independent volume audit.

The 5–6 ms figure does not mean every page becomes five times faster. It covers the warm function invocation path, not all network time, origin work, browser rendering, or application processing. A function that waits for downstream content, calls another service, or triggers slower work can add time beyond the warm invocation metric. Netlify says the new architecture is serving production traffic at the same pricing, with no customer migration step or project changes required.

Why an Edge Function may not run—or may add latency

Netlify’s implementation guide, updated August 25, 2026, emphasizes route scope and execution limits. Edge Functions are most appropriate for short request/response work close to the request path, such as localization, authentication, personalization, redirects, and framework middleware. The runtime remains Deno-based, and functions are written in JavaScript or TypeScript, version-controlled, built, and deployed with the rest of the site.

  • No matching route: A function needs an explicit route. Netlify says a function without a route may deploy without an error or warning and never execute.
  • Route too broad: A catch-all such as /* may intercept static assets. Each matching request can invoke the function and add latency, so scope routes to the paths that actually need logic.
  • Duplicate middleware: Check whether a framework adapter already generates middleware before adding another function for the same behavior.
  • Unneeded downstream wait: Call context.next() only when the request needs downstream content, such as a static asset or serverless function on the same internal path.
  • Caching not configured as required: Netlify’s guide says caching requires both manual cache mode and appropriate response headers; either alone is insufficient.

The guide lists current limits of 50 ms CPU per request, excluding time waiting on resources; 512 MB of memory; and 20 MB of compressed code. These are documented limits, not guaranteed permanent architecture limits. Netlify’s announcement says the limits came from the isolate-based execution model and may be revisited, but does not say they have already changed.

For longer-running or database-heavy work, background or scheduled tasks, heavier Node dependencies, or memory needs above those limits, Netlify’s guide points developers to Netlify Functions rather than Edge Functions.
