Nick Lewis says he replaced his manual RSS-to-NotebookLM routine with an application that pulls in feeds and summarizes them using a locally run model. His setup uses Ollama and Gemma 4 12B. It automates the recurring digest, but it uses the computer’s own resources and does not reproduce NotebookLM’s full feature set.
What the local RSS digest does
In his August 25, 2026, How-To Geek article, Nick Lewis describes building an RSS application that accepts feeds directly, rather than routing an existing RSS reader through an AI service. It ingests feed items, summarizes them locally, and can generate a morning digest as well as further summaries during the day. Lewis also says he can add as many feeds as he wants.
The practical change is removing the recurring manual transfer: instead of skimming feeds and pasting selected items into a document or notebook, the application gathers feed content for summarization. Lewis describes tuning the prompt to adjust the summaries’ tone.
The model and runtime in Lewis’s setup
Lewis names Gemma 4 12B as the model and Ollama as the runtime. That identifies the components he used; it is not a compatibility guide or a guarantee that the same model will run well on every computer. The account does not establish current compatibility details or requirements across devices.

Why he chose local processing
Lewis’s preference was to keep this RSS workflow on his own machine rather than upload feed material to a cloud AI provider. He says the content was not especially sensitive; his concern was that cloud processing would involve a provider’s servers. That is his reasoning and preference, not an independently verified description of any provider’s data-handling terms.
Local processing also changes where the workload lands: summarization uses the reader’s computer. Lewis says he considered whether his PC would remain usable while a model ran, putting speed and resource consumption alongside privacy as practical factors.

What to expect from local models
Lewis characterizes local models on typical consumer hardware as less capable than frontier systems, and says CPU-only inference can be slow. His experience therefore supports a trade-off, not a claim that local AI is always faster, more capable, or effortless to run.
He reports that a quantized 7B model ran in 8GB of memory. This is one author’s practical observation, not a general minimum or guarantee: memory use can vary with the model, quantization, context length, and device. It also does not establish that his named Gemma 4 12B setup has the same memory requirement.

How this differs from NotebookLM
Lewis found NotebookLM less suited to his recurring digest routine because his workflow required manually transferring feed items and because he wanted automation. His article also reports daily generation and question caps and a 50-source-per-notebook ceiling. Those are reported claims from the August 2026 article, not independently verified current limits, so they should not be treated as confirmed product specifications.
The distinction is one of scope: the local application is built around ingesting RSS feeds and producing summaries, while Lewis’s preference for it concerns that specific routine. His account does not show that the application matches NotebookLM’s broader feature set, nor does it compare multiple readers, models, or hardware configurations.

Who this approach suits
- Consider a local digest if you want feed collection and summaries automated on your own computer and are comfortable configuring a model workflow.
- Consider the trade-off first if you rely on strong cloud-model capabilities, need the computer free during summarization, or do not want to manage local software and hardware demands.
- Do not assume an upgrade is necessary based on Lewis’s 8GB observation alone; it is not a universal hardware recommendation.
