No—this 2005 “sugar boost” was not a recommendation to feed sugar to tomato plants. Chemistry researchers synthesized the carbohydrate portion of α-tomatine, a tomato defense glycoalkaloid. The material was made so scientists could study how tomato pathogens interact with and deactivate that defense compound. The report did not test sugar treatments, demonstrate better disease resistance, increase yield, or extend shelf life.
What the “sugar boost” headline actually means
The phrase came from a September 8, 2005, Chemistry World report about work by Sergey Nepogodiev and colleagues. “Sugar” referred to a defined carbohydrate structure inside a larger tomato molecule, not sucrose, glucose, syrup, or any other garden additive. “Boost” described the availability of a laboratory-made compound for chemical and biological studies; it did not describe a stronger plant or a measured crop benefit.
The distinction matters because a headline can sound like practical gardening advice when the underlying result is synthetic chemistry. Nothing in the report supports sprinkling sugar on tomato soil, spraying a sugar solution on leaves, or changing a tomato plant’s fertilizer program. Those actions were not tested in the account.
| Headline wording | What it means scientifically |
|---|---|
| “Sugar” | The carbohydrate portion of α-tomatine, synthesized as methyl lycotetraoside |
| “Boost” | A larger supply of pure material for controlled laboratory experiments |
| “Fungus fighting” | The defensive role of α-tomatine and the study of fungal enzymes that can deactivate it |
| Practical treatment | Not established by this report |
Why α-tomatine matters to tomato–fungus interactions
Tomatoes make α-tomatine as a defense glycoalkaloid. The molecule includes a carbohydrate segment attached to the rest of the compound. That complete structure, rather than an isolated household sugar, is part of the plant’s chemical response to attackers.

Some fungi that attack tomatoes produce enzymes capable of deactivating α-tomatine. In effect, the pathogen can chemically disarm a defense molecule that would otherwise hinder it. Understanding that interaction requires more than knowing that α-tomatine exists: scientists need material with a controlled, known structure so they can examine how the molecule behaves and how fungal enzymes alter it.
The 2005 report therefore sits at the intersection of organic chemistry and plant pathology. Chemists made a specific carbohydrate target; biologists can use such material to investigate plant defense, fungal detoxification and the behavior of related saponin compounds. The work is a research-enabling step, not a field intervention.
What the researchers synthesized
The target: methyl lycotetraoside
The linked paper identifies the target as methyl lycotetraoside, the tetrasaccharide constituent of tomato α-tomatine. “Tetrasaccharide” means that the carbohydrate portion contains four sugar units joined into one branched structure. It is not a name for a product sold to gardeners, and it is not equivalent to table sugar.

Nepogodiev’s team assembled the four carbohydrate units using one-pot, double-coupling chemistry. In practical terms, the route combined two coupling operations in a coordinated reaction sequence rather than treating every connection as a completely separate, isolated exercise. The important result for readers is the ability to build the branched carbohydrate target in the laboratory with a defined structure.

The news report described the chemistry as a route to the carbohydrate part of α-tomatine, while the paper title specifies the methyl lycotetraoside target.
How a pure synthetic sample helps fungus studies
Plant tissues contain mixtures of compounds whose amounts can vary with variety, maturity and growing conditions. A chemically synthesized sample gives investigators a defined material to place in an experiment. That makes it easier to ask whether a fungal enzyme recognizes the carbohydrate structure, removes or changes part of it, or otherwise contributes to α-tomatine detoxification.
The report quotes Robert Field: “The availability of pure materials from chemical synthesis is crucial to enabling key studies to understand the ecological relationship between plants and fungi.” The point is methodological. Researchers can work with a known molecular target instead of relying only on extracts whose composition is harder to control.

Does adding sugar help tomatoes fight fungus?
The answer supported by this report is no demonstrated benefit. The article does not describe an agricultural trial in which plants received sugar, methyl lycotetraoside, α-tomatine, or another carbohydrate treatment. It reports no disease scores, yield measurements, shelf-life measurements, application rates, soil instructions or safety guidance.
That means the following claims go beyond the evidence:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Adding household sugar to soil will make tomato plants fungus-resistant.
- Spraying a sugar solution on leaves will strengthen α-tomatine defenses.
- Feeding plants the synthesized carbohydrate will increase fruit production.
- The synthesis itself proves longer post-harvest life.
None of those outcomes was measured in the cited news account. A molecule can be chemically important without being an effective field treatment. It may need to be attached to the rest of α-tomatine, delivered in a particular way, taken up by plant tissue, or tested for effects on the plant and the pathogen before any agricultural conclusion is possible.

What the report says about future tomato breeding
The article presents breeding as a possibility, not a result. Nepogodiev is quoted saying: “it may prove possible to breed tomato strains for improved fungal resistance, and hence greater crop yield and longer shelf life.” The conditional phrase is essential. No new tomato line, yield increase, resistance percentage or shelf-life extension is reported.
A breeding program could, in principle, use knowledge of α-tomatine and fungal detoxification to look for plants whose defense chemistry is harder for pathogens to neutralize. That might involve selecting plants with different α-tomatine production, altered timing of production or other genetic traits affecting the interaction. However, the synthesis alone does not identify a useful gene, prove that more α-tomatine is always beneficial, or show that a change would improve fruit quality.
Any claim of agricultural success would require a separate chain of evidence:

| Was improved resistance, yield or shelf life measured? | No. Those outcomes were discussed only as possible future breeding implications. |
Why the distinction is useful for readers
Scientific headlines often compress several steps into a few words. Here, “fungus fighting” describes the biological role being studied, while “sugar boost” describes the chemical component researchers learned to make. Keeping those roles separate prevents an experimental chemistry result from becoming accidental gardening advice.
It also clarifies what a reader can reasonably expect next. The immediate value is better access to a pure molecular building block. That can improve the quality of experiments on fungal enzymes and plant defenses. Only after those experiments, followed by plant and field testing, could anyone determine whether the knowledge translates into a practical tomato variety or treatment.
How to read the 2005 result today
The report should be dated in your mind: it appeared on September 8, 2005, and summarizes work published that year. Its lasting significance is the chemical access it describes, not a consumer product or a completed crop technology. The cited paper’s DOI is 10.1039/b508752j.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you encounter a modern post claiming that this story proves sugar cures tomato fungus, check whether it supplies evidence that the original report did not: a defined treatment, a control group, a named tomato variety, a pathogen, application conditions and measured outcomes. Without those details, the post is changing a synthesis story into a plant-care claim.
Bottom line for gardeners and science readers
The “boost” was molecular. Researchers synthesized the four-sugar carbohydrate portion of α-tomatine so they could study how tomato pathogens defeat a natural plant defense. The work helps explain a plant–fungus chemical relationship and may inform future breeding, but it does not show that adding sugar to tomato plants improves fungal resistance, yield or shelf life.
