Dry wet shoes without risking damage
Use the shoe and dryer makers’ care instructions, especially for leather, glued components, and other materials that may be sensitive to heat. Danner advises against strong direct heat, including campfires, and warns that placing boots over a home heater or vent can create a fire hazard. It also states, “Please do not put your boots in your clothes dryer.” Danner’s guidance describes gently warmed-air boot dryers and newspaper as alternatives for wet footwear.

- Remove loose dirt and follow the footwear maker’s cleaning and drying instructions.
- If the footbeds are removable, take them out if the shoe maker permits it so the interior can air out.
- Use a dryer only as directed; do not assume a heat setting or timed cycle is safe for every shoe.
- If you do not have a dryer, Danner suggests newspaper as a non-appliance drying option. Avoid placing footwear over a heater or vent.
Other ways to manage persistent odor
Drying addresses dampness; other care steps may help when odor remains. A 2018 Panasonic announcement reported that about 62% of sneaker wearers in its June internet survey said they took steps to remove shoe odor, while about half were dissatisfied with their methods. The manufacturer surveyed 2,000 people in Japan, male and female, from their teens through their sixties; this is a dated manufacturer-reported survey, not a current universal estimate.
