Fixing a card-deletion bug in Orbit Board starts with a reproducible failure, a scoped issue, and a regression test—not a guess about which line of code is responsible. Orbit is an open-source task manager whose issues can be viewed as a board or a list. The project’s contribution guide explains how to set up the code, test a change, and submit a pull request. The exact deletion incident described here is not documented in the available project references, so its symptom, cause, fix, and outcome must be treated as the contributor’s account unless an issue or pull request confirms them.

What a card deletion bug can mean

In Orbit, a board is an interface for working with issues; it is not a separate product. A card that appears undeletable can point to different failures, and identifying which one occurred is essential to an accurate bug report.

  • The control is missing or disabled: investigate what the interface displays and whether the current user should be offered the action.
  • The delete request fails: trace the request and server-side operation, including authorization.
  • The deletion succeeds but the card remains visible: check whether persistence completed and whether the board received or rendered the update.

Orbit’s documentation describes changes being written to Postgres, published through Redis, and delivered over a websocket to people permitted to see them. That architecture suggests useful places to investigate; it does not establish which layer caused this particular bug. The project also says server routes enforce authorization through shared policy, while the UI uses that policy to decide which controls to show. A hidden button and a rejected deletion request are therefore different problems, not interchangeable descriptions. See the Orbit documentation overview and contribution guide.

Start with a scoped issue and coordinate first

Orbit’s contribution guide recommends choosing a small, well-scoped issue with file paths identified. Comment on the issue before starting so the project can assign the work and avoid duplicated effort. For work larger than a bug fix, agree on the proposed approach before coding.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a deletion report, make the issue useful to someone who has not seen the failure firsthand. Record the steps and conditions that reproduce it, what should happen, what actually happens, and any relevant user or permission context. Identify the affected component or file only when verified; do not infer it from the visible board behavior. If an issue or pull request exists for this incident, link it so readers can distinguish documented project history from a personal account.

  1. Clone the official repository: https://github.com/Noveum/orbit.
  2. Install dependencies with Bun.
  3. Copy .env.example to .env.
  4. Start the local infrastructure, prepare the databases, and seed them as the guide directs.
  5. Run the development server. The guide documents the web app on port 3000 and the realtime development service on port 3100.

Follow the current guide and branch-specific instructions for exact commands and prerequisites; setup details can change. The repository describes self-hosting as being in Preview, which is not a promise that a preview deployment is production-ready. Its latest source release is labeled 2026.09.08; that is the repository’s release label, not a guarantee about the version installed in any particular environment. See the official setup and contribution instructions and the repository.

Trace the failure without assuming its cause

Once the bug reproduces locally, compare the observed behavior with the intended result and follow the operation through the relevant layers. The exact code path and defect for this incident have not been independently established, so treat these as investigation questions rather than claims about what happened:

  • Does the board offer the delete control under the conditions in the report?
  • Does the server accept or reject the deletion, and is authorization enforced as expected?
  • Does the domain operation persist the change?
  • After a successful change, does the realtime update reach the relevant viewers and does the board reflect it?

Orbit’s guide says authorization belongs in packages/shared/src/policy and must be enforced server-side; UI visibility alone is not sufficient. Follow the repository’s architecture and conventions rather than adding a client-only workaround. The guide also calls for strict types, Zod validation for external input, shared theme tokens, and tests in package-specific tests/ trees. Check the current branch’s instructions before editing.

Make the regression test prove the fix

Orbit’s contribution guide states: “A feature is not done until it has a test that would fail if the feature broke.” For a deletion fix, the useful test depends on the confirmed failure layer. It should reproduce the reported conditions, assert the expected outcome, fail against the buggy behavior, and pass with the change. Do not claim a regression test exists or passes unless that result is verified.

The guide says bun run verify runs lint, the comment-policy check, types, and tests, and recommends running it before pushing. Report exactly what you ran and what passed; a verification command does not establish a test result unless it was actually run on the proposed change.

Submit a focused pull request

Orbit recommends branching from main, keeping one unit of work per branch, and opening a pull request into main. Explain what changed and how it was validated, link the issue, and use a reference such as Closes #123 when appropriate. For a visual change, include screenshots or a short recording; if styling changed, the guide requests evidence in both themes.
