A familiar voice or convincing video is not proof that an urgent request is genuine. Agree on a private family code word—or another verification procedure—before an emergency, then pause and contact the person through a number or channel you already trust before sending money, credentials, or sensitive information. The code word adds useful friction; it is not a guarantee.

Why a familiar voice is no longer enough

AI tools can synthesize speech and alter faces in audio and video that may seem authentic. When a caller claims to be a relative in danger or asks for immediate help, familiarity can make it easier to react before checking who is actually contacting you. Treat an unexpected urgent request as unverified, even if the voice or face seems right.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported in its March 11, 2024 spotlight on combating deepfakes that current detection technologies have limited effectiveness in real-world conditions. Lighting, facial expression, media quality, and generation methods unlike those used to train a detector can affect accuracy. Trying to spot a glitch by eye or ear is therefore a weak primary safeguard.

How to set up a family code word

A code word is a private phrase agreed on in advance and used to check an unexpected request. The Saudi Data and AI Authority’s Deepfakes Guidelines Version 1.0 surfaced in official search results as including family-specific code words for verification; the guideline PDF was not retrievable for detailed review, so no further procedure should be attributed to it. There is no established effectiveness rate showing how often family code words stop deepfake scams.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Choose it together during a calm moment. Pick a phrase that is memorable to the household but not easy to guess from public posts or ordinary conversation.
  2. Keep it private. Do not publish it or send it in a message that an outsider could access. If you record the household procedure, secure the record and do not leave the secret where a visitor or intruder could find it.
  3. Agree on what happens when it is used. Decide that an urgent request involving money or sensitive information triggers a pause and an independent check, rather than immediate action.
  4. Choose a fallback. Agree in advance to call a saved number, use another already trusted channel, or ask a trusted family member to confirm if the phrase is forgotten, unavailable, or possibly compromised.

What to do when an urgent request arrives

  1. Pause the transaction. Do not send money, share credentials, or disclose sensitive information while you are trying to establish who is contacting you.
  2. Use the agreed check, if appropriate. Ask for the family code word without revealing it first. A correct response can be one useful signal, but it is not conclusive proof: the phrase could have been overheard, guessed, or exposed.
  3. Start a separate contact. End the call or stop responding, then contact the person using a number saved before the incident or another channel you already trust. Do not rely on a number or link supplied in the suspicious call or message.
  4. Use the backup if the check fails or cannot be used. Contact another trusted family member or follow the alternate procedure you agreed on. A missing or incorrect code word does not, by itself, prove that the caller is an impostor; it means you should verify another way.
  5. Proceed only after independent confirmation. If you cannot reach the person or confirm the situation, do not let urgency substitute for verification.

How the safeguards differ

Household checks and technical tools solve different parts of the problem. A code word and callback help you verify a request through a separate route; media-analysis tools look for clues about a recording. Neither makes every claim safe or authentic.

Safeguard What it can help establish Limit to keep in mind
Family code word Whether the caller can provide a phrase agreed on privately in advance. The phrase may be guessed, overheard, exposed, or unavailable to a legitimate caller; it is not conclusive identity proof.
Callback to a saved number or trusted channel Whether the person can be reached through contact details you already had independently. It requires you to initiate a separate contact; a number supplied in the suspicious message is not an independent check.
Deepfake detection Potential signs that media is synthetic or altered. GAO says current detection has limited effectiveness in real-world scenarios, and detection alone may not prevent abuse or stop misinformation spreading.
Provenance, authentication, or synthetic-content labels Clues about a piece of content’s origin or whether it has been altered. These approaches are complementary signals, not universal proof that every image or video has verifiable provenance, depicts the truth, or supports a safe request.

Why detection and face matching are not enough

Detection asks whether media may be synthetic or manipulated; it does not necessarily establish who is making a request or whether the request is legitimate. GAO notes that detection alone may not prevent abuse or stop misinformation from spreading.

NIST’s Identity Proofing Requirements (SP 800-63-4, section 3.14) addresses a related but narrower setting: remote identity-proofing workflows that use captured media. NIST explains that these workflows can be vulnerable to deepfake and injection attacks, and that biometric comparison alone does not prevent them. Its safeguards are requirements for service providers and proofing contexts, not a household checklist.

NIST’s overview of technical approaches to digital content transparency surveys content authentication and provenance, synthetic-content labels such as watermarking, detection, testing, and auditing. These methods can help platforms or organizations assess media, but they do not guarantee that every clip carries verifiable origin information or that a verified clip makes its speaker’s request safe.

Make the verification habit useful, not brittle

  • Keep the code word out of public posts and ordinary messages that could expose it.
  • Do not assume that a correct phrase alone proves identity; confirm high-stakes requests through an independent channel.
  • Do not assume that a missing phrase alone proves fraud; use the backup procedure.
  • Do not make visual or audio artifacts—such as odd blinking or glitches—the main test. Detection can fail under real-world conditions.

The Federal Trade Commission’s April 2024 article on voice cloning says “there is no single solution” to the risk. A family code word is best understood in that spirit: a simple, low-tech layer paired with a pause and independent contact, rather than a substitute for verification.
