A data center in lunar orbit would need to operate as a spacecraft: solar arrays and energy storage would supply electricity, heat-transfer systems would carry waste heat to radiators, and radio, optical, or relay links would move data between the facility and Earth. NASA missions and programs provide relevant precedents for each subsystem, but they do not establish an operational lunar-orbit data center. Its exact design would depend on its orbit, computing workload, availability target, and service life.

How would a lunar data center get power?

A likely starting point is solar arrays feeding regulated power-distribution equipment, with storage to bridge eclipses and meet temporary demand. Array and storage sizes cannot be specified without a defined orbit, electrical load, and availability target; eclipse duration and redundancy also affect the design.

Solar power and storage

Solar generation is useful only when the spacecraft can collect sunlight, so the system must account for periods when the arrays are shaded. Batteries or another storage system would need to supply the facility during those periods and handle power transients. Those requirements must be designed together with the computing load rather than inferred from a general spacecraft rating.

What Gateway’s power system does—and does not—show

NASA describes Gateway’s Power and Propulsion Element as a 60-kilowatt solar-electric-propulsion spacecraft that supplies Gateway with power and high-rate communications. That is a concrete lunar-orbit-related spacecraft precedent, not a recommended power level or evidence that 60 kilowatts would run a data center. NASA’s Gateway overview describes the element’s role and capability.

Could power be beamed from orbit?

A NASA-hosted study analyzes a conceptual system that would send laser power from orbit to wavelength-matched photovoltaic arrays on small lunar science landers during lunar night. It is a study of power delivery to landers—not an established commercial service or a demonstrated way to power a data center in orbit. The NASA Technical Reports Server paper on power beaming from lunar orbit describes that concept.

How would computers be cooled in space?

Vacuum does not cool servers by carrying heat away in moving air. A lunar-orbit facility would have to conduct heat from its electronics through engineered thermal paths and reject it from radiator surfaces as infrared radiation. The radiator’s required area and operating temperature depend on the heat load, its view to deep space, and exposure to the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

Move heat from electronics to radiators

Depending on the design, heat pipes or pumped fluid loops could transport heat to radiators. The important system-level task is maintaining a reliable path from densely packed electronics to radiator surfaces while keeping components within their operating-temperature limits. Radiator placement and orientation matter because the surrounding bodies and sunlight affect the radiative environment.

What lunar-orbit thermal experience can tell us

NASA’s Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration (LLCD) flight-correlation paper analyzes avionics thermal performance in lunar orbit. It notes that the modem and controller boxes were internally mounted without a dedicated radiator, illustrating that thermal control can be integrated with a host spacecraft. LLCD was not a server installation, so its thermal analysis does not provide a scaling rule for data-center equipment. The LLCD flight-correlation paper documents the spacecraft analysis.

How would data get back to Earth?

A facility could combine radio-frequency links for command and data paths with optical links where their potential capacity justifies more demanding pointing and availability requirements. Relay spacecraft could extend communications when the facility or a destination on the Moon lacks direct visibility to Earth. The design would need to account for link capacity, pointing, relay availability, and whether data can wait to be forwarded later.

Radio links and lunar relays

NASA’s LunaNet framework describes lunar communications, navigation, and science services using radio and infrared optical communications. NASA’s Lunar Communications Relay and Navigation Systems (LCRNS) project describes relay satellites intended to support astronauts, rovers, and orbiters—including in places where Earth is not directly visible. These programs offer a framework for lunar networking, not a data-center service with a specified rate or uptime. See NASA’s LunaNet overview and NASA’s LCRNS overview.

Optical links: demonstrated, but not a capacity guarantee

NASA says LLCD transmitted data between the Moon and Earth, establishing a lunar-distance optical-communications precedent. NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) platform supports continued development and testing of optical communications, including transmission through relay satellites. These demonstrations do not establish continuous availability, throughput, or economics for a data center. Optical links also require precise pointing, acquisition, and tracking; ground terminals must address weather and atmospheric turbulence. NASA’s LCRD material describes adaptive optics at its ground stations. See NASA’s LCRD overview and its overview of optical communications activities.

Why the subsystems cannot be sized separately

Compute power becomes electrical demand and, in turn, waste heat that must be transported and radiated. Communications equipment also consumes power and generates heat, while data traffic and required uptime influence the link and storage architecture. A change in orbit can affect eclipse periods, thermal exposure, and line of sight to Earth or a relay. A 2026 preprint on orbital data centers discusses these coupled spacecraft and economic constraints, but its modeled areas and masses are scenario-specific examples, not validated requirements for a lunar facility. The preprint, “Orbital Data Centers: Spacecraft Constraints and Economic Viability,” presents those analyses as modeling rather than an established lunar design.

Before assigning figures to an actual system, a mission would need to define at least:

  • the orbit and eclipse profile;
  • the computing workload and required electrical power;
  • data traffic, users, and whether data destinations are on Earth, in orbit, or on the lunar surface;
  • availability, redundancy, and mission lifetime;
  • radiation tolerance and replacement or servicing assumptions; and
  • the deployment architecture and communications-relay assumptions.

Without those inputs, exact array capacity, battery mass, radiator area, link rate, cost, and uptime are not established.

What exists today, and what remains a concept?

NASA describes relevant building blocks: Gateway power and communications capabilities, lunar communications and navigation planning, optical communications demonstrations between the Moon and Earth, and thermal analysis of LLCD avionics in lunar orbit. A NASA-hosted study explores orbital laser power delivery to small lunar landers, while the 2026 orbital-data-center preprint models broader spacecraft constraints. These precedents and studies inform possible architectures; none establishes a deployed lunar-orbit data center at this scale. NASA’s lunar surface technology overview also covers computing and network systems in the broader lunar technology context, rather than specifying an orbital data center.
