A Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) is a group or organizational capability that coordinates action when a computer security incident occurs. Its central work is to limit damage through containment, eradication, and recovery; its exact responsibilities and organizational setup vary.
What does CSIRT mean?
CSIRT stands for Computer Security Incident Response Team. NIST’s glossary defines a computer incident response team as a group, usually of security analysts, organized to develop, recommend, and coordinate immediate mitigation actions for containment, eradication, and recovery after computer security incidents. NIST also records CIRT and CIRC as related names; CIRC can mean Computer Security Incident Center, Computer Security Incident Capability, or Cyber Incident Response Team.

What does a CSIRT do?
A CSIRT provides incident-response services to some or all of an organization. In practice, this can include receiving reports of possible incidents, investigating them, and coordinating steps to reduce resulting harm. The team may work with IT, security, leadership, legal, communications, or other groups, depending on the organization’s procedures and the incident.

The exact scope is not fixed by the name. NIST’s older SP 800-61 Rev. 2 guide lists possible additional services such as intrusion-detection-system monitoring and management, distributing threat advisories, and educating users and IT staff about their roles in prevention and response. These are examples, not requirements for every CSIRT.

What counts as a computer security incident?
NIST’s glossary describes a computer security incident as an occurrence that actually or imminently jeopardizes the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of information or an information system, or violates—or imminently threatens to violate—law or security policy. An organization’s incident-response policy helps determine which events trigger CSIRT involvement and how they are escalated.

Does every CSIRT have the same structure?
No. A CSIRT may be a dedicated team or a response capability shared across existing roles. It can serve a whole organization or only a defined part of it. The term describes the incident-response function, not a universal department chart, staffing level, or complete list of services.

NIST finalized SP 800-61 Rev. 3 on April 3, 2025, superseding Rev. 2. Rev. 3 frames incident response within cybersecurity risk management and aligns its recommendations with the six functions of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0. Use Rev. 3 for current NIST recommendations. Rev. 2 remains useful when describing the older guide’s specific discussion of team responsibilities and example services.
