A 2013 proof-of-principle study showed how a bottle could detect and identify bacterial strains by sensing volatile chemicals released during growth. The device did not rely on anyone smelling a sample: it translated gaseous metabolites into a colour pattern. The researchers reported identifying eight strains in tryptic soy broth within 24 hours, but this was an experimental result—not a clinically validated test for diagnosing patients.

What “odour” meant in the experiment

The phrase “bacteria incriminated by their odour” is shorthand for detecting volatile chemical signals. As bacteria grew, they released gaseous metabolites. A sensor array responded to those compounds with visible colour changes; a person’s sense of smell was not part of the test.

The work was reported in the Analyst paper “Single step, rapid identification of pathogenic microorganisms in a culture bottle”. The Royal Society of Chemistry described the method as a colourimetric sensor array diagnostic bottle, or CSA-DB.

How the colourimetric sensor array diagnostic bottle worked

The experimental setup paired a reaction chamber, where bacteria grew, with a prearranged array of chemoresponsive dyes. Volatile compounds from the chamber reached the array and caused a pattern of colour changes. The researchers used that response pattern to detect and identify bacterial strains during culture.

In practical terms, the bottle’s output was a chemical-response pattern, not a visual inspection of the bacteria themselves. The concept aimed to combine detection and identification within the culture process.

What the study reported—and what it did not

The paper’s abstract reports detection and identification of eight bacterial strains in tryptic soy broth (TSB) within 24 hours, starting from clinically relevant concentrations. The authors described the work as proof of principle: “Here, as proof of principle, we describe a colourimetric sensor that rapidly identifies opportunistic pathogenic bacteria in a single step in TSB media.”

Those results describe the specific experimental conditions reported in the 2013 paper. They do not establish performance across all clinically relevant bacteria, direct testing of human blood, or accuracy in routine patient diagnosis. The available publisher record does not establish the complete tested-strain list, detailed classification analyses, or independent validation results.

Why the blood-culture connection was a proposal

The authors presented the sensor as a possible way to streamline the blood-culture process by combining detection and identification steps. That potential application should not be confused with demonstrated clinical use. The reported experiment was conducted in TSB media, and the available record does not establish validation using human blood or adoption by clinical laboratories.

The 2013 report contrasted the concept with a multi-step blood-culture workflow as it was described at the time. That is a historical workflow comparison, not a current head-to-head clinical evaluation or a statement about present-day laboratory standards.

Is this a clinical test you can get today?

The cited sources document an experimental research system, not a generally available diagnostic product. They do not establish whether this particular system has since been commercialized or adopted by clinical laboratories, so its current availability remains unresolved. The paper is best read as a demonstration of a sensing approach, not as a product recommendation or evidence that patients can receive this test.
