Yes—a research team demonstrated a gas sensor made by drawing compressed carbon nanotube material across electrodes printed on paper. The 2012 laboratory device responded to ammonia, with the study reporting measurements down to 0.5 parts per million (ppm). It was a research prototype, not a ready-made detector or certified household alarm.
What is a nanotube pencil?
It is a compacted form of carbon powder, including single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), that can be rubbed across a surface much like a pencil. The word “pencil” describes the drawing action: the sensing material is not the graphite core of an ordinary pencil.
In the demonstration, researchers deposited gold electrodes on paper, then drew the nanotube material across the gaps between them. The deposited carbon formed a conductive network. When ammonia diluted with nitrogen flowed past the device, the network’s electrical current changed. Measuring that change provided the sensor response. The fabrication method relied on mechanical abrasion rather than solvent-based deposition. The original study and a contemporary account of the work describe the process.

What gas did it detect, and how sensitive was it?
The demonstrated target was ammonia (NH3). In the 2012 study, the SWCNT sensors detected ammonia at concentrations as low as 0.5 ppm. For devices drawn on weighing paper, the reported dynamic range was 0.5–5000 ppm, while the authors calculated a theoretical detection limit of 0.36 ppm. These figures are different kinds of results: 0.5 ppm was the lowest reported tested concentration, whereas 0.36 ppm was a theoretical limit, not a reported test at that concentration. The paper reports the measurements and calculated limit.

For weighing-paper devices tested over 0.5–80 ppm ammonia, the reported coefficient of variance between devices was 5 ± 1%. This describes variation among devices under the study’s conditions; it does not establish performance in everyday environments.
Why did the researchers use weighing paper?
The team examined different paper substrates and carbon materials, including SWCNTs, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and graphite. They identified weighing paper as the best-performing substrate among those tested, based on signal-to-noise ratio, sensitivity, and theoretical detection limit. The contemporary account also notes that smoother paper performed better than rougher paper. The study’s substrate results support that comparison.

The study considered multiple carbon forms, but that does not mean each produced equivalent ammonia-sensing performance. The headline sensitivity results above refer to the SWCNT devices.
Could the same approach detect other gases?
Potentially, but not automatically. The researchers discussed functionalizing the sensing material to adapt it to other analytes. That is a proposed extension, not evidence that this ammonia prototype detected a broad range of gases, disease biomarkers, or chemical warfare agents.

Is it a practical gas alarm?
No consumer-ready product or certified household alarm is established by this study. The work shows a laboratory fabrication approach and ammonia response under controlled test conditions; it does not establish field performance across changing temperature, humidity, or other environmental conditions, nor does it show that the device meets safety-alarm requirements. The authors discussed possible attributes such as low cost, disposability, and wearable use, but those are potential applications rather than proof of an available product.
The significance is the simple fabrication concept: conductive carbon material could be drawn across paper-mounted electrodes to create a responsive sensing element. Turning that element into a dependable detector would require further engineering, validation, and appropriate certification.
