A CAD geometry layer does more than draw shapes: it stores their mathematical definition, connects that geometry into model topology, and provides algorithms for creating and changing the result. The viewport’s triangles are a derived display approximation; the editable model needs its underlying geometry and topology.

What the geometry layer does

A geometry kernel is the computational core beneath an application’s modeling commands and viewport. It represents and evaluates mathematical entities such as points, curves, and surfaces, and provides operations that construct or modify shapes. The application uses those capabilities to implement features and manage a document; the renderer uses model data to produce a view.

Geometry can exist without being part of a model boundary. A curve may be defined mathematically, for example, before it is used as an edge. Topology supplies the relationships that organize bounded portions of geometric entities into a shape. Autodesk’s Fusion API documentation describes a boundary representation (B-Rep) as combining geometry and topology.

Geometry and topology are different

Geometry answers what an entity is mathematically: a point, curve, or surface. Topology answers how model elements connect and which portions of geometry bound the shape. A plane, for instance, defines a supporting surface; it does not, by itself, say where a face on that plane begins or ends.

A face with a hole makes the distinction concrete. The underlying surface may be a plane, while the face’s topology describes boundary loops for the outer perimeter and the opening. In a B-Rep, faces are bounded regions on surfaces, edges and vertices describe their boundaries and connections, and larger structures assemble those elements.

The usual B-Rep hierarchy

A common topology hierarchy runs from smaller elements to larger ones:

  • Vertex: a topological point, typically associated with a geometric point.
  • Edge: a bounded curve connecting vertices, or a closed curve in cases where its ends meet.
  • Wire: an ordered collection of connected edges, often used as a face boundary.
  • Face: a bounded region of a surface, potentially with inner loops such as holes.
  • Shell: a connected collection of faces.
  • Solid: a closed volume bounded by connected surfaces.

The precise implementation details vary by kernel, but this hierarchy is a useful way to reason about B-Rep data. Open CASCADE’s topology documentation describes the shape structures and relationships involved.

A solid B-Rep is more than a collection of visible surfaces: its connected boundary must enclose a closed volume. That structure supports solid-oriented calculations and operations; Autodesk cites mass properties as an example in its B-Rep documentation.

Which responsibilities belong in the kernel?

The kernel should provide mathematical representation and shape-level algorithms. The application should own user-facing design intent and document behavior. This boundary is a practical architecture, not a universal standard: the exact division depends on the application and the selected kernel.

Layer Typical responsibilities
Geometry representation and evaluation Points, curves, surfaces, parameter evaluation, intersections, and transformations.
Topology and shape construction Vertices, edges, wires, faces, shells, solids, and their relationships.
Modeling algorithms Primitives, shape building, Boolean operations, fillets, offsets, features, and validity checks, according to the required scope.
Application and document model Feature history, parameter dependencies, semantic references, persistence, undo and redo, and recovery from failed operations.
Visualization Generating renderable meshes from model data and refreshing them when the model changes.

Open CASCADE’s modeling-algorithm guide documents separate geometric and topological tools, along with APIs for building shapes, filleting, features, offsets, and primitives. It is version 6.8.0 documentation, so use it to understand the broad organization rather than assume current API names or behavior.

Operations need explicit failure handling

Construction and modification algorithms can fail when their inputs or resulting geometry are unsuitable. An application should treat a modeling request as an operation that can produce a valid result or a failure state—not assume every Boolean, fillet, or offset succeeds. The document layer can then decide how to report the failure, preserve the last valid model, or let the user revise the operation.

Why render triangles are not the editable model

A viewport commonly renders triangles because they are convenient for display. Those triangles approximate the underlying curves and surfaces; they do not necessarily preserve the exact model entities, boundary relationships, or feature intent needed for CAD editing. Keep the authoritative model in its geometric and topological representation, and derive a mesh for visualization.

When geometry changes, regenerate or update the derived display representation so it corresponds to the current model. The appropriate tessellation settings depend on application requirements; the cited documentation does not establish a universal tolerance or performance target.

How parametric edits complicate face and edge references

In a feature-based application, changing an earlier parameter can recompute downstream geometry. That recomputation may split, replace, or remove faces and edges. An application feature that points to “face 7” by its current position in a list can therefore end up referring to a different face—or to nothing—after an edit.

This is a reference-management problem at the boundary between kernel topology and the application’s feature and document model. Open CASCADE’s older OCAF white paper describes reference keys as one approach for identifying topology-associated data in a changing model. It is an approach, not a guarantee that a face or edge will retain the same identity through every possible operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applications need to define what happens when a reference cannot be resolved: attempt a documented remapping, flag the dependent feature for repair, or report a recompute failure. Avoid presenting a positional index as a durable semantic identity unless the application’s policy explicitly accounts for topology changes.

What to evaluate when choosing a kernel

There is no meaningful universal ranking without testing against the application’s models, workflows, and deployment constraints. Compare candidate kernels against the work the product must do, and verify current version, license, and platform details with each provider.

  • Representation coverage: required curve and surface types, solid and surface modeling, and import needs.
  • Algorithm coverage: construction, Boolean operations, fillets, offsets, and other modifications the product actually needs.
  • Robustness: behavior on difficult, degenerate, or near-coincident geometry, measured with representative models.
  • Topology and history integration: the structures and change-tracking support available, and the application work needed for persistent references.
  • Interoperability: supported exchange formats and the fidelity required by target workflows.
  • Deployment fit: licensing, platform support, API language, integration effort, and performance on representative workloads.

These criteria help turn “which kernel?” into a requirements decision. The best fit is the one whose documented capabilities, integration costs, and behavior on the product’s actual models meet the application’s needs.
