A browser-based CAD editor can do more than display a floor plan: in Arif Dogan’s project, it converted uploaded DWG files into a structured building model, let people edit that model in 2D and 3D, and gave an AI agent tools to inspect and change it. The key was not simply adding chat to a drawing. It was building one validated model that import, editing, export, and AI tools could all use.
What did the browser CAD editor do?
Dogan’s implementation took a floor plan through several stages: upload a DWG, convert and interpret its geometry, store inferred building elements, and present them in a React-based editor. Users could work with a 2D CAD view and a Three.js 3D viewer, review quantity take-offs, and export back to DWG, according to Dogan’s account.
A chat panel gave Claude access to the same model through application tools. A user could ask a question such as “how many doors and windows are there?” The agent could query the model, report counts, or make edits that appeared in the editors and could be undone.
The project’s reported stack included LibreDWG, ezdxf, FastAPI, DBOS, SQLModel, SQLite, React, Vite, TypeScript, Three.js, Canvas 2D, rbush, the Anthropic Python SDK, and Claude Opus 4.8 through Azure AI Foundry. These are the components Dogan named in his account, not a current compatibility or version recommendation.

Why is converting a DWG into a building model difficult?
A CAD drawing may depict a wall as several lines rather than an explicit object labeled “wall.” As Dogan put it, “a dwg file does not contain walls. it contains lines.” Turning those lines into walls, openings, rooms, and labels therefore requires interpretation. The output is a model inferred from geometry—not a guarantee that every element or property was explicitly present in the source file.
That distinction matters when an agent answers a question about the plan. Its count of doors, for example, is only as dependable as the import process that classified geometry as doors. Dogan describes an example in which the assistant flagged a 300 mm opening as a likely mis-detected door. The warning is useful precisely because the model’s classification can be uncertain.
How did the import pipeline reconstruct building elements?
Convert the file, then recover its geometry
Dogan’s pipeline accepted an uploaded DWG and used LibreDWG as a subprocess to convert it to DXF, which ezdxf could process. Isolating the converter in a subprocess helped contain crashes. For damaged files that the normal recovery path could not parse, he describes a fallback that scans raw DXF tags.

Units needed their own check. The importer did not blindly trust the DWG’s $INSUNITS header, because Dogan says it can be wrong; his system estimated units from the drawing’s geometric extent instead. That estimate is still an interpretation to verify, not proof that the drawing was authored in the inferred units.

Infer walls, openings, and rooms
The extractor exploded blocks, sampled arcs, split polylines, and used layer names—including hints in multiple languages—to help classify geometry. It grouped wall-like fragments by approximate direction and offset, merged projected intervals, and retained some gaps as possible openings. Door and window segments were projected onto nearby walls.
When layer names did not provide useful clues, the system used fallback classification and warned that reconstruction was approximate. Storey height, door height, and window-sill height could also be defaults rather than values recorded in the plan; Dogan says these assumptions were represented with warnings. A user should therefore check inferred types, dimensions, units, and defaults before relying on quantities or 3D output.
For rooms, the system split wall centerlines at intersections, built a half-edge walk, traced bounded faces, and assigned labels using point-in-polygon tests. It discarded the unbounded exterior. Dogan says an L-shaped plan revealed a flaw in an earlier bounding-box heuristic; he changed the rule to discard the largest face instead. That example illustrates why room reconstruction needs validation against varied geometry rather than relying on a simple outline rule.
What made the editor responsive?
Dogan organized the canvas into layers with different redraw needs: a base layer for the grid and original linework, a cached model layer for walls and annotations, and an overlay for the cursor and drag previews. Batched paths and spatial indexes limited the work done during pointer movement. The principle is to avoid repainting static content for every small interaction.

Snapping candidates were prioritized in this order: endpoints, intersections, midpoints, perpendicular or on-line candidates, and then the grid. Undo used whole-model snapshots, while edits were committed as transactions.
In Dogan’s reported measurements, rendering took 1,154 ms per frame before an optimization and 82 ms under a software rasterizer afterward; he says the optimized editor reached a comfortable 60 fps on a real GPU. These are project-specific figures from his 2026 account, not independent benchmark results or a guarantee for other drawings and hardware.
How could the AI inspect and edit the model?
Dogan gave Claude thirteen application tools: three read operations for a model summary, element listings, and quantity take-offs, plus ten write operations affecting walls, openings, rooms, annotations, storey data, names, and deletion. That design let the agent work with building concepts instead of issuing arbitrary changes to drawing pixels.
Crucially, the tools sent mutations through the same save path used by the editor. The backend applied schema checks and domain rules such as opening-fit checks, default sizes, automatic marks, and cascade deletes. Tool errors could be returned to the model so it could correct and retry an operation. The shared write path reduced the chance that AI edits would bypass ordinary application validation, but it did not eliminate the need for validation.

That distinction showed up in fuzz testing: Dogan says it found a negative-width opening that passed a fit check. He added explicit range validation. A tool schema can restrict the shape of an input, but the server still needs to enforce the conditions that make a change valid in the building model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How did the project handle saves, stale state, and undo?
An AI agent changing the server-side model can conflict with edits still waiting in a user’s browser. Dogan’s frontend flushed pending saves before starting an agent turn. After the agent’s tool calls, it fetched the updated model and committed the result as one undo transaction. That made a multi-tool AI change reversible as one user action rather than leaving the local editor and saved model out of sync.
The editor autosaved after a 900 ms debounce, according to Dogan, and its tool loop could continue for up to 12 rounds. Those timings describe this implementation, not universal requirements for browser editors or AI agents.

What do the project’s results show—and what do they not show?
Dogan reports that, after fixes, his smoke-test corpus covered 231 real DWG files with zero crashes. He says the files included architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings across versions r1.4 through 2025. This is a result for his corpus and implementation; it does not establish compatibility with every DWG file or prove that every imported element was classified correctly.
He also retrospectively estimated that 90% of the work went into extraction, geometry, and the editor. That allocation underlines the engineering lesson: the chat interface is only the visible layer. Reliable AI assistance depends on a usable semantic model, explicit assumptions, correct save ordering, and server-side constraints.
Dogan’s account also describes commercial browser CAD SDKs as either lacking the DWG editing capability he needed or starting around $7,500 a year for a broader general-DWG scope. That is his market observation in 2026, not a current price survey or comprehensive comparison. His project instead focused on editing a reconstructed semantic model rather than reproducing every capability of a general-purpose DWG editor.
What is the central engineering lesson?
The strongest idea in the project is the shared, structured model: import infers building elements, the editor changes them, export uses them, and the agent operates through the same validated application rules. That architecture makes an AI copilot more useful than a layer that merely interprets a drawing and proposes untracked changes.
But structured output should not be confused with source-file truth. Geometry can be ambiguous, units can be wrong, and defaults can be assumptions. A useful system surfaces those uncertainties, validates edits at the server boundary, keeps the user’s live state synchronized, and gives people a clear way to undo the agent’s work.
