A University of Birmingham team has reported a barium–niobium–calcium–iron oxide catalyst that splits water in a thermochemical cycle at lower temperatures than the ranges commonly reported for comparable catalyst systems. The best-performing formulation, called BNCF100, produced hydrogen at 150–500°C and was regenerated at 700–1000°C, according to the university’s 1 May 2026 announcement.

This is a laboratory-stage process, not a commercial hydrogen machine. Its appeal is the possibility of using heat that would otherwise be wasted at renewable-energy sites and industrial facilities. The reported 10-cycle durability result and a preliminary cost study are encouraging, but the announcement does not establish reactor performance, lifetime, efficiency, emissions, or a sale-ready product.

What the new hydrogen route actually is

The work concerns thermochemical water splitting. Instead of passing electricity through water, as an electrolyser does, the process uses a solid oxide catalyst and heat to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen through a repeating chemical cycle. It is also different from methane reforming, in which hydrogen is released from a hydrocarbon feedstock.

The catalyst family is based on a perovskite oxide containing barium, niobium, calcium and iron. The research paper identified by the university is titled “Remarkable thermochemical water-splitting on Ba2Ca0.66Nb1.34-xFexO6-δ perovskites at medium temperatures for hydrogen production” in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (DOI: 10.1016/j.ijhydene.2025.152637). The university says BNCF100 was the optimum formulation among the compositions examined.

In a typical thermochemical cycle, a metal-oxide material is first heated so that its chemical state changes and oxygen is released. Water is then introduced at a lower temperature; the material takes oxygen back into its structure while releasing hydrogen. The material is regenerated and reused. The exact reactor geometry, gas flows, pressure, catalyst loading and sequence used for BNCF100 have not been published in the announcement, so those details should not be assumed from the general description of thermochemical cycles.

The temperature claim has two different parts

The headline “low temperature” result can be misunderstood unless production and regeneration are kept separate. The university reports the following operating ranges:

Stage BNCF result reported by the University of Birmingham Comparison stated in the announcement
Hydrogen-production step 150–500°C Current catalysts are described as operating at 700–1000°C
Catalyst-regeneration step 700–1000°C Current catalysts are described as requiring 1300–1500°C for regeneration
Overall temperature message The university summarizes the potential reduction as up to 500°C This is a comparison of the reported ranges, not a single independently measured process temperature

The 150–500°C figure refers to where hydrogen production was observed. The catalyst still requires a higher-temperature regeneration stage, reported as 700–1000°C. Calling the entire cycle a 150°C process would therefore be inaccurate. The university’s “500°C reduction” summary reflects the difference between the reported regeneration range and the 1300–1500°C range it gives for current catalyst systems.

Lower temperatures matter because heat losses, materials constraints and equipment costs generally become more manageable as peak temperature falls. They can also make more industrial waste-heat streams usable. However, temperature alone does not determine efficiency or cost. The amount of heat required per kilogram of hydrogen, how often the catalyst must be regenerated, the rate of hydrogen release and the method used to separate product gases are all decisive and have not been quantified in the announcement.

How BNCF fits into a thermochemical cycle

Water is the feedstock

The hydrogen atoms come from water. The cycle must prevent hydrogen and oxygen from mixing, because a combined stream can be explosive and cannot be sold as a separated product. Industrial systems normally use separate reaction zones, timed steps, gas sweeping or another separation strategy. The Birmingham announcement does not specify which arrangement was used in the laboratory work.

The perovskite stores and releases oxygen

Perovskite oxides are crystalline materials whose composition can accommodate changes in oxygen content. In this application, that oxygen mobility is used to make the solid catalyst alternately release oxygen and react with steam. BNCF refers to the elements in the material: barium (Ba), niobium (Nb), calcium (Ca) and iron (Fe). The “100” in BNCF100 identifies the formulation the team reported as optimal; the announcement does not provide a consumer-facing product specification or a commercial grade.

Heat replaces part of the electricity requirement

An electrolyser converts electrical energy directly into hydrogen and oxygen. A thermochemical system instead supplies heat to drive the catalyst through its chemical states. Electricity may still be needed for pumps, controls, water treatment and gas separation, but the central energy input is heat. That distinction is why the proposed applications focus on facilities with a dependable high-temperature heat source.

What the laboratory evidence shows—and does not show

Ten reported cycles

The university says BNCF retained its hydrogen-production capability over 10 cycles. X-ray diffraction reportedly showed little structural change during that test. This indicates that the crystal structure remained broadly stable for the experiment performed.

Ten cycles is an early durability check, not a commercial lifetime. A plant expected to run for years could require thousands of cycles, and performance can change because of sintering, contamination, mechanical attrition, impurities in water or thermal shock. The announcement gives no operating hours, hydrogen yield per cycle, catalyst mass, cycle duration or post-test activity measurement. Those missing values prevent a meaningful comparison with industrial catalyst lifetimes.

Missing performance numbers

The announcement does not state:

  • hydrogen yield in grams or normal cubic metres per cycle;
  • production rate per kilogram of catalyst;
  • thermal-to-hydrogen efficiency or total energy consumption;
  • operating pressure, steam quality or gas-flow rates;
  • reactor dimensions, heat-transfer design or scale;
  • oxygen purity, hydrogen purity or the separation method;
  • lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions; or
  • the quantity and cost of BNCF needed for a given output.

Without these measurements, the temperature result should be read as a promising materials demonstration rather than proof of plant-level performance.

Where waste heat could make the process useful

The proposed deployment model is local hydrogen production beside a renewable-energy plant or an industrial site with usable heat. Professor Yulong Ding specifically identified steel, cement, glass and chemical facilities. In these settings, a thermochemical unit could potentially use heat that would otherwise be rejected, reducing the need to generate all process heat separately.

Industrial sites

Steel, cement, glass and chemical plants often have hot exhaust gases, heated solids or other streams that leave the process above ambient temperature. The key question is not whether a site has “waste heat,” but whether that heat is available at the required temperature, continuously enough, and with a controllable profile. The BNCF production range of 150–500°C could match some lower-temperature streams, while the 700–1000°C regeneration step may require a hotter source, a heat-storage system or a supplementary heater.

Renewable-energy facilities

A hydrogen unit next to a solar-thermal, geothermal or other renewable-energy installation could avoid transporting heat over long distances. Co-location with renewable electricity could also supply auxiliary power and any additional heat needed during regeneration. The announcement presents this as a potential use case, not as a deployed demonstration.

Why local production matters

Hydrogen is difficult to store and transport compared with many liquid fuels. Producing it near the point of use could reduce compression, liquefaction, pipeline or truck movements. That benefit would depend on the final hydrogen pressure and purity requirements, neither of which the university has reported.

How this compares with other hydrogen routes

The available announcement supports a limited comparison. It does not provide enough data to rank the routes on efficiency, emissions or delivered cost.

Route Primary feedstock or energy input Temperature information available here Carbon handling Evidence maturity for this comparison
BNCF thermochemical splitting Water plus heat; BNCF perovskite catalyst Production 150–500°C; regeneration 700–1000°C No carbon feedstock; lifecycle emissions not stated Laboratory result, 10 reported cycles, preliminary economic analysis
Electrolysis (“green” hydrogen when powered by renewable electricity) Water plus electricity Not stated in the Birmingham announcement No carbon feedstock; emissions depend on electricity source Established commercial route, but no like-for-like figures supplied here
Methane reforming with carbon capture (“blue” hydrogen) Natural gas plus process heat Not stated in the Birmingham announcement Carbon dioxide is produced and capture is required; project-specific emissions are not stated Commercially deployed in some regions; no direct performance comparison supplied here
Higher-temperature thermochemical catalyst systems Water plus heat and a recyclable oxide The announcement cites 700–1000°C operation and 1300–1500°C regeneration for current catalysts Carbon handling not stated Used only as the temperature benchmark in the university comparison

The University of Birmingham says a provisional techno-economic analysis found the BNCF route cost-competitive with green and blue hydrogen, with the greatest advantage expected in regions with low renewable-energy tariffs such as Australia. No numerical cost, discount rate, plant size, energy price, replacement schedule or independent validation is included in the announcement. “Cost-competitive” should therefore be treated as a preliminary model result, not a guaranteed price advantage.

What would be needed before commercial deployment

  1. Publish full operating data. Independent readers need hydrogen yield, rate, efficiency, pressure, gas purity and heat demand for every cycle stage.
  2. Demonstrate continuous operation. A repeated batch test should be followed by a reactor that runs for substantially longer than 10 cycles and records degradation, downtime and maintenance.
  3. Test realistic heat sources. Experiments should use variable industrial exhaust or renewable heat, including start-up, shut-down and temperature fluctuations.
  4. Verify materials durability. Long-duration tests should examine sintering, phase changes, dusting, chemical contamination and catalyst recovery.
  5. Validate safety and separation. Hydrogen–oxygen segregation, leak detection, pressure control and emergency shutdown must be engineered at pilot scale.
  6. Rebuild the economic model transparently. The analysis should disclose capital costs, heat integration, catalyst replacement, water treatment, electricity use, financing assumptions and regional energy prices.
  7. Complete independent assessment. Lifecycle emissions, water use and performance should be checked by parties other than the developers before claims are generalized.

The university says it has filed a patent application, is commercialising the technology in the UK and Europe, and is seeking development partners. Those statements indicate an early commercialization effort; they do not identify a sales channel, operating plant or consumer product.

What the 95% fossil-hydrogen figure means

The university announcement attributes a figure of 95% of current hydrogen production relying on fossil fuels. The release does not identify the original statistical publisher, so that percentage should be treated as the university’s cited context rather than an independently verified number in this article. The broader point is that replacing fossil-derived hydrogen requires both low-carbon energy and a process that can operate reliably at industrial scale.

Practical interpretation for engineers and project developers

A site evaluating BNCF should begin with a heat audit, not a purchase order. Measure the temperature, flow, availability and contaminants of every candidate heat stream. Then compare those data with the separate production and regeneration requirements. A stream that can supply 300°C continuously may suit the hydrogen-production step but still be inadequate for regeneration without heat storage or an auxiliary heater.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Next, define the hydrogen user’s specification: pressure, purity, delivery pattern and maximum interruption. A process that produces hydrogen in a laboratory vessel may need compression, drying, purification and buffer storage before it can feed a steel furnace, chemical plant or fuel-cell system. Those balance-of-plant systems can dominate cost even when the catalyst itself is inexpensive.

Finally, treat the 10-cycle result as a screening signal. A sensible pilot contract would require agreed targets for availability, output, catalyst replacement, emissions and heat consumption, with independent measurement and a clear stop condition if the material degrades.

Bottom line

BNCF100 is a promising research-stage catalyst for thermochemical water splitting. The reported 150–500°C hydrogen-production range is substantially below the operating range cited for current catalyst systems, while regeneration is still reported at 700–1000°C. Ten cycles with little structural change and a preliminary cost model justify further pilot work, especially where industrial waste heat is available. They do not yet prove commercial efficiency, lifetime, cost or readiness, so the technology should be viewed as a candidate for development partnerships rather than an available hydrogen product.
