A Bird Story belongs between To the Moon and Finding Paradise. The clearest release-order path is To the Moon (2011) → A Bird Story (2014) → Finding Paradise (2017) → Impostor Factory (2021). Just a To the Moon Series Beach Episode (2024) is a later bonus entry, not part of A Bird Story’s bridge position.
A Bird Story is an optional, approximately one-hour, dialogue-free interactive animation rather than a numbered full episode. Playing it after To the Moon preserves the series’ release progression and gives the intended interlude before Finding Paradise, although the full games remain understandable if you skip it.
The complete To the Moon release timeline
The series’ release dates establish A Bird Story’s position without requiring a complicated chronology. It arrived after the first game and before the second full episode, so release order is also the most useful first-play order.

Freebird Games describes To the Moon as the series’ first episode. The same publisher calls Finding Paradise the second full episode and Impostor Factory the third episode. Steam describes A Bird Story as an experimental short from the creator of the first two games: a simple, surreal, one-hour interactive animation about a boy and an injured bird, told without dialogue. Those descriptions explain why it sits in the sequence without carrying an episode number.

What A Bird Story contributes between the two full episodes
A Bird Story functions as an interlude rather than a conventional sequel. Its compact, dialogue-free presentation gives it a different rhythm from the full episodes, and its story is communicated through animation, interaction and visual progression instead of spoken conversations. That format is part of its identity; it is not a shortened version of Finding Paradise or a replacement for the first game.
Its placement still matters. Played after To the Moon, it forms a natural pause before the series moves to the new patient and perspective introduced in Finding Paradise. The short is commonly described as a bridge into the Colin-era narrative, so release-order players encounter that transition in the same position in which the audience originally received it.
The bridge should not be interpreted as a claim that the short is a numbered chapter that must be completed to unlock the next game. Freebird Games does not present it as the second full episode; that designation belongs to Finding Paradise. Think of A Bird Story as connective material for players who want the broader series experience, not as a missing mainline installment.

The most accurate label is a side story or interlude. It follows To the Moon in the release sequence, but its short, dialogue-free structure and non-numbered status distinguish it from a full sequel. Calling it simply “the sequel” can mislead new players into expecting the next long-form episode.

It is also not positioned as a prequel to To the Moon by the publisher’s episode numbering. The practical relationship is linear: begin with the first episode, use A Bird Story as an optional short between major entries, then continue to the second full episode.
For a player deciding whether to purchase or launch it, the useful question is not whether it is mandatory canon. No official statement identified for the series says that A Bird Story is required before Finding Paradise. Instead, decide whether you want the release-order interlude, its visual storytelling format and its completionist value.
Recommended play orders for different players
First-time players
Use the release order:
- Play To the Moon.
- Play A Bird Story.
- Play Finding Paradise.
- Play Impostor Factory.
- Finish with Just a To the Moon Series Beach Episode as a bonus entry.
This route introduces the series in the order its major releases appeared and places the short exactly where it was designed to sit: after the first game and before the next full episode.
Players focused only on the full episodes
If your priority is the numbered narrative games, play To the Moon, Finding Paradise and Impostor Factory. Add A Bird Story later when you want the surrounding material. Skipping it does not prevent you from starting or understanding Finding Paradise; it simply removes the short interlude from your route.

Completionists
Include every entry in release order, with the 2024 Beach Episode last. This gives you the one-hour experimental short in its intended gap and keeps the later bonus material separate from the numbered progression. Treating the Beach Episode as an extra avoids moving it into A Bird Story’s earlier bridge position just because it is newer.
Returning players replaying the series
A release-order replay is the least confusing option because all five dates are explicit. The 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2021 entries form the core progression, while the 2024 Beach Episode can be added after them. If you want to concentrate on the principal episodes, omit the two shorter or bonus-format entries without changing the order of the three numbered games.
Chronological order versus release order
For this series, there is no practical conflict between the two approaches in the information available. The dates place A Bird Story after To the Moon and before Finding Paradise, and the recommended sequence follows those dates. You do not need to rearrange the games to make a separate chronological timeline.

What you gain by playing A Bird Story
- The intended interlude: You experience the short in the space between the first and second full episodes rather than discovering it out of sequence.
- A different storytelling format: The approximately one-hour presentation is dialogue-free and described as an interactive animation, so it offers a distinct contrast to the longer games.
- Series continuity: Its bridge role helps connect the first game’s release to the Colin-centered setup of Finding Paradise.
- Completionist satisfaction: You cover the non-numbered short as well as the principal episodes and later bonus entry.
These benefits are about context and experience, not access. A Bird Story’s value is highest for readers who want the complete sequence or appreciate compact experimental storytelling.
What happens if you skip it?
Skipping A Bird Story lets you move directly from To the Moon to Finding Paradise. The available official descriptions do not make the short a required prerequisite, and the full games can be approached without treating it as a mandatory chapter. You will, however, miss the one-hour dialogue-free interlude and the release-order bridge between those two major episodes.
If you later decide you want the complete context, play A Bird Story before revisiting Finding Paradise or insert it into your next release-order run. Because it is short, it is easy to add without rebuilding your entire sequence.

Finding Paradise
Released on December 14, 2017, Finding Paradise is identified by Freebird Games as the second full episode of the series. It follows a new patient named Colin, which is why A Bird Story’s position is best understood as a transition into a different full-game narrative rather than as another numbered episode.

Impostor Factory
Impostor Factory arrived on September 30, 2021, and Freebird Games labels it the third episode. It follows Finding Paradise in both the release list and the recommended play order. There is no reason to move A Bird Story after it; doing so would break the short’s established 2014-to-2017 placement.
Just a To the Moon Series Beach Episode
The Beach Episode released on September 20, 2024. Steam lists it as a later bonus entry featuring established series characters. Place it after the numbered episodes when you want a complete current run. It does not replace A Bird Story as the interlude between To the Moon and Finding Paradise.

- Putting A Bird Story before To the Moon: Its 2014 release came after the 2011 first episode, so it is not the starting point.
- Calling it the second full episode: Freebird Games reserves that description for Finding Paradise.
- Assuming one-hour means irrelevant: Its short length describes the format, not whether it belongs in the release sequence.
- Putting the Beach Episode in the 2014 gap: The 2024 bonus entry is later and should be treated separately.
- Assuming it is mandatory: No official requirement is stated; include it for the interlude and completionist experience rather than to satisfy a prerequisite.
Bottom line on A Bird Story’s place
A Bird Story is the short, dialogue-free bridge released in 2014 between the 2011 first episode, To the Moon, and the 2017 second full episode, Finding Paradise. The cleanest route is therefore To the Moon → A Bird Story → Finding Paradise → Impostor Factory, followed by the 2024 Beach Episode if you want the later bonus. You may skip the short and still proceed to the full games, but playing it in that gap gives the series’ timeline its intended release-order shape.
