A custom 316L stainless-steel flow reactor let researchers complete a model difluoromethylation in under two minutes at −65 °C. The result, reported by Bernhard Gutmann and colleagues in 2017, is a reactor-design demonstration: stainless steel helped manage heat transfer and withstand demanding chemical and pressure conditions. It does not establish that the reaction works equally well across many substrates or at industrial scale.
What the stainless-steel reactor changed
The challenge was not simply keeping a reaction cold. The researchers needed to handle an exothermic reaction—a reaction that releases heat—at cryogenic temperature while bringing several streams together quickly and safely. The authors concluded that stainless steel enabled fast heat transfer and high pressure resistance in their reactor, making those conditions possible.
They designed and made the custom reactor by selective laser melting, a metal 3D-printing process, using 316L stainless-steel powder with a reported median particle size of 43.5 μm. Its four inlets admitted the substrate solution, n-butyllithium, gaseous fluoroform and, at the end, a quench. The study identifies the material and flow geometry as central to its approach; it does not report a head-to-head test against another reactor material or design.

How the experiment ran
For the demonstration, the team used diphenylacetonitrile as the model substrate. They combined its solution with n-butyllithium, introduced gaseous fluoroform, then quenched the reaction with methanol. The reactor was held at −65 °C, and a back-pressure regulator was set to 5 bar.

In this specific 2017 experiment, the authors reported 95% selectivity by GC-FID and completed the reaction in less than two minutes. After processing 4 mL of starting-material solution, they isolated 395 mg of product in 81% yield. These figures describe the reported model reaction, not a general expected performance for other substrates or reactor setups. Read the study in Reaction Chemistry & Engineering.
Why use fluoroform?
Fluoroform (CHF3) is the reagent used to introduce the difluoromethyl group in this reaction. Chemistry World described it as a waste product generated during fluoropolymer production and presented the chemistry as a way to turn that stream into a synthetic building block. That framing concerns a possible chemical use: this experiment does not show that the approach solves fluoropolymer waste or reduces greenhouse-gas emissions generally. What the result does—and does not—show
The paper demonstrates that a custom metal flow reactor could support a rapid, exothermic difluoromethylation at −65 °C under the reported conditions. The authors used one model substrate and said they had not comprehensively re-optimized the reaction conditions. The result therefore does not establish broad substrate scope, routine industrial manufacture, or applicability to every fluoroform reaction.
Nor does the paper establish that the custom design is commercially available or that an off-the-shelf stainless-steel flow component can reproduce the experiment. For readers considering other reactor setups, relevant comparison criteria include heat transfer, chemical compatibility, pressure tolerance, achievable temperature, and geometry or mixing; the study itself did not compare alternatives across those measures.
