A reported 23-player Halo: Combat Evolved match ran on an Anbernic RG35XX H because the game was running through an unofficial native ARM64 port—not because the handheld was emulating an Xbox. The port is built from the OpenCE community decompilation project, and its developer reported 50–60 frames per second, mostly 58–60, while joining a public Blood Gulch Slayer game. Those are results from one developer-reported setup, not an independent benchmark, a verified maximum player count, or a guarantee of typical performance.
What happened in the 23-player match?
The specific demonstration was on an Anbernic RG35XX H, a handheld based on an Allwinner H700 processor and Mali-G31 GPU. The port’s developer, kirklandsig, reported joining a public Blood Gulch Slayer match with 22 other players. That makes 23 players in the reported game. Notebookcheck also described it as a 23-player public Slayer match in its October 8, 2026 report.
The developer reported 50–60 fps during that multiplayer session, with the rate mostly between 58 and 60 fps. This figure applies to that reported match on that device and setup. It is not an independent measurement, a statement about all games, or proof that every RG35XX H will achieve the same result. Nor does one match establish an official player limit or the largest match the port can support.
The key to understanding the result is the execution method: the project adapts reconstructed Halo game code to run natively on ARM64 hardware. It is a community project, not an official Microsoft release, and it does not include the game data. The user must supply compatible files from an original Xbox copy.

Is Halo running through Xbox emulation?
No. The RG35XX H demonstration used a native port. The project author describes it directly: “There is no emulation: no xemu, no Box64, no Wine.” In other words, the handheld is not recreating the Xbox hardware in software, and this particular match was not run through an Xbox emulator.
What “decompilation” and “native port” mean here
Decompilation is the effort to reconstruct source code from an existing compiled program. OpenCE is the community project underlying the port. The port then adapts and compiles game code for ARM64, the instruction set used by the H700 processor, and connects the game to software interfaces and graphics support available on the handheld.
That is different from emulation. An emulator attempts to reproduce the behavior of another system’s hardware so that software made for that system can run within the emulated environment. A native port instead adapts the program to the target processor and operating environment. It can still involve substantial compatibility work: the game expects particular services, graphics behavior, and other interfaces, and the port must provide suitable equivalents. But the device is executing code adapted for its own architecture rather than acting as a software Xbox.
What the project says about its software path
The project describes an ARM64 host program that loads the game’s compiled guest image, connects SDL calls to the handheld firmware’s SDL2, and runs OpenGL ES work through a Mali-focused graphics path. These are components of the port’s execution path, not evidence that the handheld contains Xbox hardware. The project is unofficial and experimental, so its compatibility and behavior depend on the specific device, firmware, and release.

How can the handheld connect to a 23-player game?
The networking in the demonstration came from the OpenCE build. Its project documentation describes a public server browser and the ability to host or join games over the internet or a local network. It also describes network campaign co-op with compatible OpenCE builds. The reported test, however, was narrower: the developer said they joined the public Blood Gulch match. The account does not establish that the developer tested hosting from the handheld or online campaign co-op during that update.
A useful way to separate the pieces is to think of the port as making the game runnable on the handheld, while OpenCE’s networking features provide the documented ways to find or connect to compatible games. The 23-player result shows that one handheld build joined one public match; it does not by itself tell you how many servers are usually available, how stable connections are, what latency players experienced, or how reliably other devices will connect.
Compatibility matters at both ends. The project describes connecting with compatible OpenCE builds on PCs or other handhelds. A game running on an unrelated build or a different network setup should not be assumed to interoperate just because it is also Halo. The available evidence does not provide a population study, a latency dataset, or a multi-device performance study.
How this differs from Xbox emulation and XLink Kai
There are multiple ways to play Xbox-era games over a network, but they are separate technical paths. The RG35XX H match used the OpenCE native port. xemu is an Xbox emulator with its own networking backends, and XLink Kai is a peer-to-peer service for LAN-based gaming over its network. Neither is established as part of the reported handheld match.

| Path | How the game runs | Networking described in the sources | What is established about the example |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenCE-based native port | Game code adapted and compiled for ARM64 on supported H700 handhelds. | Project documentation describes a public server browser, internet or local hosting and joining, and network campaign co-op with compatible builds. | The developer reported joining one public 23-player match on an RG35XX H. Hosting and online campaign co-op were not personally tested in the cited update. |
| xemu Xbox emulation | Software emulates Xbox hardware; this is not the method used in the handheld demonstration. | Official documentation describes NAT, UDP Tunnel, and Bridged Adapter backends. | The available evidence does not provide an equivalent test to compare directly with the reported RG35XX H match. |
| XLink Kai | A separate service for peer-to-peer LAN-based gaming over its network. | It can be relevant to LAN-style Xbox play in supported setups; xemu documentation describes bridging to a service such as XLink Kai. | Nothing establishes that it was used in the OpenCE handheld match. Its homepage listing Halo 2 as an active Xbox game does not establish Halo CE support in this case. |
xemu’s three network backends address different connection arrangements. NAT provides a network path through address translation; UDP Tunnel encapsulates traffic to create a virtual LAN among xemu users; and Bridged Adapter connects the emulated Xbox network to a local network. xemu’s documentation cautions that Wi-Fi bridging may not work as expected when the access point or client cannot support multiple MAC addresses for one connection. Those details matter when configuring xemu, but they should not be mistaken for how the RG35XX H port joined its public game.
What you need to try the handheld port
The project’s documented target is Allwinner H700 handheld hardware, with the RG35XX H identified as tested. Captured setup instructions target Knulli and the project also provides releases for Knulli and PortMaster. Firmware and device status vary, however: the repository distinguishes tested devices from user-reported, expected-to-work, and untested models. A compatibility mention is not the same as a developer-tested result.
Requirements to check before setup
- Supported hardware and firmware: Confirm that your exact handheld model and installed firmware are covered by the current project documentation. Do not assume that another handheld with similar specifications is supported.
- Port files: Use the release and instructions intended for the relevant firmware. Release packaging and installation directions can change, so consult the project’s live documentation rather than relying on instructions for a different release.
- Your own Xbox game data: The release does not contain game files. The repository requires an original Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved and specifies a North American or European Xbox disc image. PC-version game files do not work.
- Storage space: The project specifies about 3 GB free on the card. That allowance covers extracted map data, the game’s initial cache, and temporary room for the disc image during setup.
- A network connection for online play: The public server browser and internet play are OpenCE features, but availability of a game to join and connection quality are not guaranteed by the single reported match.
Because the repository’s captured instructions are tied to particular hardware and firmware, it is safer to follow the current project documentation step by step than to copy commands or file paths from an older guide. Check that you have the correct Xbox-region image, enough free card space, and a package for your firmware before troubleshooting performance or networking.
What the performance report does—and does not—tell you
The headline performance number is specifically the developer’s report of 50–60 fps, mostly 58–60, during the public multiplayer match. That is useful evidence that the featured setup could run the reported game smoothly for its developer, but the scope is one device and one reported session. No independent reproduction or broader test is established.

The project repository separately reports campaign and menu frame-rate measurements under specified conditions. Those figures are not multiplayer measurements and should not be substituted for the developer’s match report. Different scenes and modes can impose different work on the processor and graphics path; a menu result does not predict the frame rate in a crowded multiplayer match, and one multiplayer session does not settle campaign performance.
The player count has the same limitation. Twenty-three is the total reported for that one Blood Gulch game, not an official capacity claim, a stress test, or evidence that every public server will have a comparable population. The report does not provide a latency value, packet-loss measurement, or a survey of other players’ devices. A reader should treat the clip or account as a demonstration of possibility, not as a service-level promise.
Why the distinction matters for choosing a setup
A native port and an emulator solve different compatibility problems. With the port, the game code is adapted for the handheld’s ARM64 processor and software environment, but the device and firmware must be among the configurations the project supports. With emulation, software recreates an Xbox environment, and the user deals with the emulator’s own hardware requirements and network configuration. Neither path is universally easier or more compatible; the right choice depends on the software available for the target device and the play arrangement you need.
Recommended Free Tools
For this particular handheld story, the practical decision is whether your goal is to reproduce the OpenCE setup on compatible H700 hardware. If so, check the live device and firmware notes, obtain the required game data from your own Xbox copy, and use the corresponding package. If you instead want an Xbox emulator setup, consult that emulator’s own documentation and treat its networking configuration separately. Do not expect emulator-specific options such as UDP tunneling or bridging to explain a match that was run through the native port.
Finally, distinguish capability from verification. Project documentation may describe hosting, joining, and campaign co-op, while a specific report may test only joining a public multiplayer match. That difference is not a contradiction: a feature can be documented without having been independently validated in every device-and-firmware combination. For the featured result, the strongest supported statement is that the developer reported joining a public 23-player match on the RG35XX H using the OpenCE-based native port.
