360-degree reframing means recording the whole scene first, then choosing the direction and composition you want in editing. The Insta360 X4 Air uses two fisheye lenses and stitches their images into a spherical 360-degree file. In the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio, you can then look around that file, select a conventional flat view, and export a normal video without having pointed the camera at that angle while filming.
This is best understood as “shoot first, point the view later.” It is different from simply cropping a regular wide-angle clip: the source contains viewpoints around the camera, so the selected angle can change throughout the edit. The exact buttons and export labels can change with app, Studio and firmware updates, so use the current interface on your device rather than relying on an old tutorial.
What reframing changes—and what it does not
A conventional camera commits to a field of view when you press Record. A 360 camera records the directions around itself. Reframing is the post-capture decision about which portion of that spherical recording appears in a flat, rectangular video.

The X4 Air’s two fisheye lenses capture overlapping views. The camera stitches those images into a 360 image or video, and the editor renders a selected perspective for a standard screen. You can pan from one side of the scene to another, tilt up or down, and change the apparent composition over time. The result is a normal-looking video file, but the camera move was designed after the event.

Reframing does not create detail that was never captured. A chosen view uses only the part of the 360 image that fills the output frame, and the final appearance depends on the capture mode, source quality, crop, stabilization and export settings. The product page lists 8K 360 video as a capability; it does not mean every mode or every export is 8K.
Capture footage that reframes cleanly
Choose 360 mode
Use the camera’s 360 mode when you want to decide the viewing direction later. Single-Lens Mode records a conventional direction and therefore does not provide the same around-the-camera reframing flexibility. Start recording only after confirming that the intended 360 mode is active.
Position yourself relative to a lens
For the cleanest stitch, face one lens while filming. Avoid standing between the two lenses with the other lens pointed directly at your subject. The overlap and perspective difference are greatest around the stitch line, so placing an important face, object or action there can produce a visible seam or distortion.

- Leave enough space around the camera for later pans and tilts; a very tight scene gives the editor fewer useful compositions.
- Mount the camera securely and keep lens surfaces clean. A smudge on either fisheye lens can become obvious when you reframe toward that direction.
Plan for the invisible selfie-stick effect
An X4 Air-compatible invisible selfie stick is optional, not a requirement for reframing. Insta360 designs the accessory to disappear from many 360 views, allowing third-person or elevated, drone-like perspectives. The stick changes the camera’s position and viewpoint; reframing itself is available with the camera alone.
How to reframe in the Insta360 mobile app
The official app can view and edit both 360 and flat X4 Air footage. The product description presents a phone-based workflow in which you swipe or move the phone to look around the recording, choose the view that tells the story, and share the resulting video.

- Import or open the clip. Transfer the X4 Air recording to the Insta360 app and open it from the app’s media area. Use a 360 clip if you want to select the viewing direction after capture.
- Preview the sphere. Drag across the preview, or move the phone if the current viewing mode supports motion control, to look toward the action. This is a preview of the full spherical recording, not a permanent crop.
- Set the composition over time. Move the view as the playhead advances so the rendered video follows the subject. Current versions may label the controls differently or expose keyframes and view adjustments in different places; follow the controls shown by your installed app.
- Apply optional corrections. If the image has fisheye curvature you do not want, use Dewarp as a lens-distortion correction. If the camera movement needs smoothing or a level horizon, configure the available stabilization and horizon controls before exporting.
- Export a flat video. Choose the app’s current export or share command and review the selected resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio and destination. Those settings vary by capture mode and software version, so do not assume that an 8K source produces an 8K flat file in every export.
There is no single, permanently reliable sequence of button names for every app release. If a tutorial’s labels do not match your screen, update the app, open the clip’s editing controls and look for the current reframe, keyframe, view or export commands rather than forcing an old path.
How to reframe in Insta360 Studio on a computer
Insta360 Studio is the desktop option for viewing and editing X4 Air 360 or flat footage. It is useful when you want a larger preview, keyboard-and-mouse control, local file management or a desktop export workflow.
- Open the original 360 file in Studio. Keep the camera’s original file available; a previously flattened export no longer contains the complete spherical view.
- Navigate the 360 preview. Drag the viewer to inspect the scene and identify the directions you want to show.
- Animate the view. Use the current Studio controls for keyframes or timeline view changes to move the virtual camera through the scene. The exact control names and placement can change between Studio releases.
- Choose correction and stabilization settings. Apply only the processing needed for the shot, then check the preview for crop, seams and horizon behavior.
- Render and inspect the result. Confirm output dimensions, frame rate, codec and destination in the export dialog. Play the rendered file outside Studio before deleting the original.
The official materials establish that Studio can edit the footage; they do not establish that desktop editing produces better image quality than the mobile app. Choose the platform for its controls, storage and convenience rather than assuming one is inherently sharper.
Dewarp is correction, not reframing
Dewarp addresses fisheye lens distortion. Reframing chooses the direction and perspective shown in the output. They can be used together, but they solve different problems.
In the app, Insta360 documents Dewarp from the Player page’s Dewarp button, or through Edit > Create a Video > select media > 360 Reframe > Dewarp. The documented viewing-angle range is 70° to 100°. A wider setting shows more of the scene with stronger wide-angle character; a narrower setting shows less and can look more natural for people or architecture.

Dewarp is not supported in Single-Lens Mode. If the option is missing, first confirm that the selected file is 360 footage and that the app supports the feature for that clip. Applying Dewarp does not by itself choose where the camera looks; you still need to set the reframe direction and its changes through the timeline.

Stabilization can change how a selected view feels, especially when the camera is moving or mounted on a stick. In the app, find the media under Album, open playback Settings > Frame, and enable FlowState Stabilization when the option is available. In Studio, use the Stabilization Type control.
In 360 mode, Insta360 says Horizon Lock is enabled by default for all photo and video modes. For X4 Air video modes other than FreeFrame, FlowState Stabilization and Horizon Lock share a toggle. A stabilized or horizon-locked view can require additional cropping. Rotating the frame to keep the horizon level can remove pixels at the edges, so inspect the full frame after enabling it.
FreeFrame and other non-360 modes do not behave exactly like a full spherical recording. Do not apply 360 reframing instructions to a clip that was captured in a mode without the complete 360 view.
Underwater reframing: why stitching can look wrong
Water changes light refraction at the lens, which can make the seam between the two fisheye views more noticeable. For underwater 360 capture, the X4 Air manual recommends the compatible Invisible Dive Case to address this stitching concern.

The camera is specified as waterproof to 49 feet (15 meters) without the case, while the manufacturer lists 197 feet (60 meters) with the Invisible Dive Case. These are manufacturer specifications with the stated accessory condition, not a guarantee for every setup or dive. Follow the manual’s sealing, inspection and depth instructions.
Remove lens guards before using a dive case. The compatibility guidance lists the X4 Air Invisible Dive Case as supported and says X4 Air lens guards are not sealed and should not be used for water-related activities. If an underwater clip has a severe seam, changing the reframe angle cannot repair missing or misaligned image data; correct the capture setup for future dives.
Accessories and when they matter

The exported video points the wrong way
Reopen the original 360 file and inspect the timeline view changes. A flattened file cannot be reframed again in the same way. Make sure you adjusted the view while the playhead was at the intended moment and that the export used the edited version rather than the untouched original.
A seam crosses a face or object
The subject was probably near the lens stitching boundary during capture. For future shots, face one lens toward the main action and avoid placing important details between the lenses. In underwater scenes, use the compatible dive case as recommended by the manual.

The image looks curved
Enable Dewarp for the 360 clip and choose a viewing angle within the documented 70°–100° range. Remember that Dewarp corrects distortion; it does not replace setting the reframe direction.
The horizon tilts or the frame looks cropped
Check FlowState Stabilization, Horizon Lock and the selected stabilization type. Leveling and stabilization can crop the edges, so reduce processing or change the composition if the crop removes an important subject.
Dewarp or 360 controls are unavailable
Confirm that the clip was recorded in 360 mode rather than Single-Lens Mode, and update the app or Studio. Dewarp is documented as unsupported for Single-Lens Mode, and interface availability can vary by software version.
