A 360-degree camera stitches footage from multiple lenses into a panoramic view; reframing then lets you choose a direction and perspective from that panorama, either during editing or for a conventional flat-video export. The two processes solve different problems: stitching joins the camera’s views, while reframing decides what the finished viewer sees.

How does a 360-degree camera stitch video?

A 360 camera captures overlapping views around its body through multiple lenses. Stitching software aligns those views and blends them into one panorama. Depending on the camera and workflow, stitching may happen in the camera, in accompanying software, or as a post-production step using the original files from each lens.

Insta360’s Pro workflow, for example, records original files from individual lenses for post-stitching. Its explanation of optical flow says the software compares image content across lenses and, for video, also compares adjacent frames from the same lens so it can adapt the seam to the scene. That describes Insta360’s documented workflow; it should not be assumed to describe every 360 camera.

Alignment is difficult where lens views overlap. A subject close to the camera may appear in noticeably different positions in neighboring lens views because of parallax. The software must reconcile those differences, and the result can include a visible seam, ghosting, or a distorted object. A high capture resolution by itself does not guarantee a clean stitch.

What is the difference between stitching and reframing?

Stitching creates the panoramic image from the camera’s lens views. Reframing happens after capture: it selects a direction, perspective, zoom, and field of view from that 360-degree scene. An editor can set keyframes at different points in the timeline to move the view through the clip, then export the selected view as a conventional flat video. Alternatively, the footage can remain panoramic for an immersive 360 workflow.

A flat export shows only the chosen portion of the recorded sphere, not the entire scene at once. Its appearance depends on the view’s direction, field of view, and projection. Reframing is therefore a way to direct attention in footage that has already captured a much wider environment.

Which stitching method should you use?

Stitching options balance seam adaptation, processing time, and scene-specific limitations. The names and tradeoffs below come from Insta360 Pro and Pro 2 Stitcher documentation, not a universal ranking of 360-camera algorithms.

Method What it does Documented tradeoff
Optical flow Uses image content to align and adapt the seam. In the documented Pro 2 workflow, a larger stitching angle takes longer and may improve the stitching effect and stitching distance.
New Optical Flow A faster optical-flow option in the Pro 2 Stitcher. The Pro 2 manual describes it as nearly three times the speed of basic optical flow in that software, while warning that some scenes may stitch less effectively.
Template-based stitching Uses a scene-specific template rather than adapting as extensively to image content. The manual calls it the fastest option, but says it has limited effect with parallax error and nearby subjects. Increasing its stitching range can smooth a seam but may cause ghosting.

These settings cannot eliminate the effect of scene geometry. A nearby subject crossing a lens boundary is more challenging than distant scenery, and camera position can affect how visible the mismatch is. Use the method that fits the scene and inspect the seam in the rendered footage rather than relying on a setting name or nominal capture resolution.

How do you reframe 360 footage?

The exact controls vary by camera and editor. Insta360 documents manual keyframes in its mobile app and desktop Studio; other camera makers may use different software, labels, and file formats.

  1. Open the camera’s supported editing software. Use the correct workflow for the camera generation and source-file format. Some workflows require the original per-lens files so the software can stitch the footage.
  2. Choose a view at the start of the clip. Set the direction and perspective you want the viewer to see. Adjust field of view to control how much of the panoramic scene appears in the flat frame.
  3. Add keyframes where the view should change. A keyframe records the selected view at a point in the timeline. The software interpolates the view between keyframes, so review the movement between them as well as the keyframed moments.
  4. Check the result and export. Look for unwanted distortion, abrupt movement, or an important subject leaving the frame. Export a conventional clip if the audience needs a standard flat video; retain the panorama if the intended experience is immersive.

Insta360’s mobile app and Studio controls are examples, not universal instructions. Consult the documentation for the specific camera and software before following a particular interface path.

Can you reframe 360 video in Premiere Pro?

Insta360 documents a Premiere Pro plugin workflow that can import supported .insv footage directly, set stitching and stabilization options, and adjust reframing. Its listed controls include output resolution, projection model, field of view, camera angle, and distortion. The manual specifies Premiere Pro 2021 and later. This is a manufacturer-documented workflow, not a guarantee that every camera file or current software version is compatible; check current plugin support and the camera’s format before choosing it.

How should you choose a 360-video workflow?

  • Decide on the deliverable: use a panoramic result for an immersive viewing experience or reframe for a conventional flat clip.
  • Consider the scene: camera movement, close subjects, and objects crossing lens boundaries can affect stitching and the visibility of seams.
  • Balance stitch quality and time: adaptive methods may take longer; faster or template-based options can be less suited to parallax or nearby subjects.
  • Plan the framing: decide how the field of view, perspective, distortion, and view movement should guide attention.
  • Check compatibility first: confirm the camera’s source format, software support, plugin version, and whether the workflow needs original lens files.

For a concrete resolution example, the Insta360 Pro manual says that 3840 × 2160 source resolution can stitch to up to 8K panoramic video in its specific workflow. That figure applies to the documented Pro workflow; it is not a general conversion rule for other cameras.
