A 24/7 YouTube livestream is a continuous encoded audio-and-video feed sent from an encoder to YouTube. It can keep running, but YouTube does not promise that any stream will stay uninterrupted indefinitely. The 12-hour figure often mentioned is an archive warning—not a universal maximum live-broadcast duration.
How a 24/7 YouTube livestream works
A streaming setup has two parts: the source and encoder that send the feed, and YouTube, which receives it and delivers it to viewers. The source might be video played from a computer or another suitable input. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—converts the source into a digital stream and sends it to YouTube’s ingest server.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the persistent feed configuration, called a liveStream, from the viewer-facing event or video, called a liveBroadcast. One feed can be associated with separate broadcasts. Google’s API guide illustrates a continuous feed remaining live while a distinct interview broadcast starts and then ends on that same feed. Ending the interview broadcast does not require stopping the incoming continuous feed. Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams describes this model.
How to start a continuous stream yourself
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and meet the minimum age requirement of 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
- Choose an encoder and prepare the source. YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Confirm that your source, encoder, and connection can sustain the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.
- Get the ingest details in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, create or open the stream setup and copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions provide the current interface steps.
- Configure and test the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP. Supported video codec options listed in its encoder guidance include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose settings the encoder supports and the upload connection can sustain. Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Consult the current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table for the bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube transcodes live video into multiple formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need for a stable, adequate upload connection from your encoder.
- Preview, then go live. Start sending data from the encoder and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before starting the viewer-facing broadcast. Keep the encoder and its power and network connection running for as long as you want to send the feed.
- Monitor and prepare recovery. Watch stream health and real-time statistics in Live Control Room. Test a backup encoder or other recovery process before relying on it, and verify that any local recording is intact and growing. YouTube recommends testing failover and monitoring the stream; it does not prescribe one mandatory hardware setup. Its streaming tips explain these operational checks.
What are the limits of a 24/7 YouTube livestream?
The 12-hour warning is about archiving
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. This is an archive limitation, not an established universal maximum duration for a live broadcast. If the replay matters, keep a local recording and check that it is being written successfully. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Concurrent streams are limited
YouTube states a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Both limits apply at once. They concern simultaneous streams, not the duration of an individual feed. Check the current live-streaming guidance if you are planning multiple feeds.
Continuous operation is not guaranteed
YouTube documents continuous feeds as a supported use case, but its reviewed guidance does not promise a universal maximum live duration or uninterrupted availability. A stream can be interrupted by problems with the encoder, power, network, or YouTube’s receipt of the feed. Reliable operation therefore depends on monitoring and a recovery plan; do not interpret “24/7” as a guarantee that a connection cannot drop.

Monetization depends on eligibility
YouTube says live streams can be monetized by channels in the YouTube Partner Programme. That does not mean every channel or stream is eligible, or that a particular stream will earn revenue. Review YouTube’s current policies and your channel’s status before budgeting for income.

Live Control Room provides stream health and real-time metrics, including concurrent viewers, duration, and chat rate. The Live Streaming API also exposes health and status values such as active, inactive, ready, and error. These signals help distinguish whether YouTube is receiving data and whether it reports a problem; they do not by themselves identify every fault in the source or network. - YouTube is not receiving the feed: Check that the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the encoder reports a successful connection. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Health warnings or unstable video: Check the encoder’s output settings and upload connection. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings, then verify the updated stream health.
- The feed stops after a power or network failure: Restore the encoder and connection, then confirm data is reaching YouTube again. If continuity is important, test a backup path in advance rather than assuming failover will work.
- The live stream is available but the replay is missing: Check whether it ran longer than 12 hours. YouTube warns that longer streams may not be captured; use a verified local recording when a complete archive is essential.
