If the draw of House of Leaves is a building whose layout cannot be trusted, start with This Is Not For You. If you want the game itself to behave like a difficult, layered text, try Liz Little’s You Will Die In This Place. For haunted or impossible houses, Anatomy, Control, and the Doom II mod MyHouse.wad are useful adjacent picks—but their links to the novel are not all established in the same way.
What makes a game feel like House of Leaves?
The novel is not simply a haunted-house story. Its impossible house is presented through layers of writing and editorial framing: a manuscript, an editor, footnotes, and evidence that the reader cannot treat as fully stable. That combination matters when choosing a game. One title may offer corridors that defy geometry; another may make the act of reading, documenting, or interpreting part of the play. Those are related experiences, but they are not interchangeable. (For a high-level account of the novel’s structure, see Wikipedia’s overview of House of Leaves; it is a secondary source.)
This guide separates four different kinds of connection: a creator’s stated inspiration, a critic’s proposed influence, a thematic resemblance, and a work whose form deliberately combines text and play. That distinction helps avoid calling every eerie building or literary horror game a direct adaptation. None of the titles below should be read as a replacement for the novel’s exact structure.
Quick comparison: which kind of experience do you want?
| Title | Best fit | Space and navigation | Text or form | How the connection is described |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This Is Not For You | Hands-on exploration of an impossible building | A lighthouse described as bigger inside than outside; mapping and notes are part of the design | The creator says it does not use the novel’s story or its meta/hypertext elements | Creator-stated partial inspiration in the Reddit post |
| You Will Die In This Place | A game that also asks to be read as a strange book | A dungeon-crawler framework; detailed navigation specifics are not stated in the cited interview | Its author says game mechanics and metanarrative are intertwined; deliberately obtuse and misleading at points | Literary and formal kinship, as described by its author |
| Anatomy | A hostile-house experience | Recommended here as an adjacent haunted-space pick; detailed mapping mechanics are not established by the cited source | Not established by the cited source as reproducing the novel’s layered text | Critic Jacob Geller has posited a connection, as reported by a secondary source |
| Control | Impossible or unsettling architecture | Recommended as an adjacent spatial pick; detailed navigation comparison is not established by the cited source | Not established by the cited source as reproducing the novel’s layered text | Critic Jacob Geller has posited a connection, as reported by a secondary source |
| MyHouse.wad | A house that shifts into impossible spaces | The house changes and contains impossible spaces, according to the secondary account | Specific textual or metanarrative parallels are not established by the cited source | Reported as directly inspired by the novel, but the available influence trail is secondary |
The comparisons are intentionally limited to what the cited descriptions establish. The broader influence discussion comes from the secondary House of Leaves overview; the creator’s account of This Is Not For You and the author interview for You Will Die In This Place provide more direct evidence about those works.

If you want to explore an impossible building: This Is Not For You
This Is Not For You is the closest match here if your favorite part of House of Leaves is spatial uncertainty made interactive. Its creator, posting as lleon779, describes a game set in an early-1900s lighthouse that is larger on the inside than the outside. The post also names unnerving geometry, puzzles, isolation, family bonds, and regret as elements of the game. Those details point to a contained exploration-and-puzzle experience rather than a retelling of the novel. (See the creator’s post in r/houseofleaves.)
Why it fits—and where the comparison stops
The creator calls House of Leaves “just a partial inspiration.” In the same post, they explicitly distinguish the project from the novel’s story and say it does not feature its “meta” or “hipertextual” elements. That is an important boundary: expect an echo of impossible architecture, not a playable version of the book’s manuscript-and-footnote structure.
The creator also describes the game as 2D and claustrophobic, with an in-game map and note tool influenced by early text adventures. They say later progress is expected to require knowledge of the layout. That makes the mapping tool more than a convenience in the design as described: remembering where you have been and recording what you notice are intended to matter. If you enjoy building your own mental model of a place, that is the strongest reason to put this title first.

Check release status before planning around it
The Reddit post describes the game as upcoming at the time it was written. Release status can change, so do not treat that description as current. Check the Steam listing for This Is Not For You for its present availability and details. The cited creator post does not establish a release date, and this guide does not infer one.
If you want the game to function like a strange book: You Will Die In This Place
Liz Little’s You Will Die In This Place is the most direct recommendation for readers drawn to the way House of Leaves makes form part of the experience. Little describes the work as both a game and a book, and says its game mechanics and metanarrative are so intertwined that neither can fully stand without the context of the other. Little characterizes it as a nihilistic dungeon crawler and a postmodern horror novel. These are the author’s descriptions, not a promise that every reader will find it conventional or easy to parse. The discussion appears in the Backward Tabletop interview with Liz Little.
Choose it for interpretive play, not a standard rules experience
Little describes the work as deliberately obtuse and misleading, and acknowledges that it is unbalanced in places. Those qualities may be exactly what a reader wants if the appeal is having to question the text and work out how its layers fit together. They are also a practical warning for someone expecting a clear, polished, conventional game experience. Approach it as an intentionally resistant work rather than assuming that uncertainty is a sign you have missed a straightforward explanation.

Little also says, “I consider ergodic literature to be playful.” In the interview, that idea is connected to activities such as taking notes, theorizing, looking up related material, and trying to understand concepts that resist easy interpretation. For a reader coming from House of Leaves, this is a useful way to think about the match: the overlap is not merely horror atmosphere, but the possibility that interpreting the work becomes part of the work’s play.

The interview described the project as crowdfunding at the time it was published. That is not evidence of its present availability. Check the project’s own current page before assuming it can be obtained or that its format and access options remain the same; the interview alone does not establish today’s status.
If you want a hostile or impossible house: adjacent picks
Anatomy, Control, and MyHouse.wad belong on a broader list of games for readers interested in unsettling architecture. Their inclusion needs more qualification than the two creator- or author-described picks above. The cited account reports that critic Jacob Geller has posited House of Leaves as an influence behind Anatomy and Control; it reports MyHouse.wad, a Doom II mod, as directly inspired by the novel. Because this influence trail is secondary, treat those connections as attributed interpretations rather than equivalent creator-confirmed claims. (The account is in the secondary overview of House of Leaves.)

Anatomy: for a house that feels threatening
Choose Anatomy if you want the hostile-house side of the comparison rather than a book-like textual structure. The available account supports presenting it as an adjacent haunted-space recommendation and attributes the proposed novel connection to critic Jacob Geller. It does not establish that the creators described the game as an adaptation, nor does it provide enough detail to claim that its navigation or text works like House of Leaves. The careful recommendation is about thematic territory, not a guaranteed one-to-one parallel.
Control: for unsettling architecture
Control is another reasonable pick if the feature you want is architecture that feels wrong or disorienting. The cited source reports Geller’s proposed connection, but it does not provide creator confirmation or establish a specific match in narrative structure. Consider it a thematic companion, not a game whose relationship to the novel is proven by the source cited here.
MyHouse.wad: for a house that changes around you
MyHouse.wad is a Doom II mod, and the secondary source describes it as directly inspired by House of Leaves, with a house that shifts into impossible spaces. That makes it the most explicit house-and-influence pairing among these adjacent recommendations, but the claim still comes through a secondary account. The evidence given here does not establish its installation requirements, compatibility, or distribution details, so check the mod’s own current documentation before trying to run it.

How to choose based on what you liked in the novel
Start with the spatial problem
If you want to get lost, keep a map, and learn a strange layout through play, prioritize This Is Not For You and confirm its current release status first. If you want an unsettling house without needing the book’s layered presentation, consider Anatomy or MyHouse.wad as adjacent options, with the influence qualifications above. Control is the broader architectural recommendation in this group; the cited evidence supports a thematic link, not a specific claim about how its spaces function.
Start with the text and its layers
If footnotes, editorial framing, unstable evidence, and interpretive labor are what you want to carry into your next experience, You Will Die In This Place is the clearest fit in this set. Its author directly discusses the relationship between the work’s mechanics and metanarrative. This Is Not For You is less suitable for that particular desire because its creator explicitly says the novel’s meta and hypertextual elements are not part of the game.
Use the strength of the connection as a filter
- Creator-stated partial inspiration: This Is Not For You, with a clearly stated limit on what it takes from the novel.
- Author-described overlap in form: You Will Die In This Place, whose creator explains how game mechanics and metanarrative depend on each other.
- Critic-proposed influence reported secondhand: Anatomy and Control.
- Reported direct inspiration, via a secondary account: MyHouse.wad.
This is not a ranking of quality. It is a way to choose the kind of relationship you care about: a work’s stated intention, its formal resemblance, or the atmosphere and spaces it shares with the novel.

- For This Is Not For You: consult its Steam page for current release and product details instead of relying on the creator post’s then-upcoming status.
- For You Will Die In This Place: verify the current project page and access format; the cited interview’s crowdfunding status was time-specific.
- For MyHouse.wad: check current installation and compatibility guidance before attempting to use a Doom II mod; those requirements are not established by the source cited here.
- For the influence claims: keep the difference between creator statements and critical interpretation in mind. A shared motif can make a game worth your time without proving direct inspiration.
Where to go next
For impossible architecture you can map, begin with This Is Not For You and verify that it is available. For a play experience that deliberately entangles mechanics with literary interpretation, look into You Will Die In This Place and be prepared for its author-described opacity. For a hostile house or changing spaces, explore Anatomy, Control, and MyHouse.wad as adjacent recommendations, not as a uniform set of confirmed adaptations. The right next game depends less on whether it is labeled “inspired by” the novel than on which part of the novel you want to experience again.
