There is no single Hougen cutter that is best for every job. Choose by the workpiece material, hole diameter and depth, drill compatibility, and whether you are cutting one plate or a stack. Hougen’s product pages describe different cutter families and manufacturer performance claims; they do not establish an independent durability ranking.
Start with the job, not the cutter name
Before comparing Hougen families, pin down four requirements. They determine which products are even suitable:
- Material and hardness: Match the cutter material and application rating to the workpiece. Hougen’s product catalog compares cutter materials and application details.
- Hole size and depth: Confirm the diameter and depth of cut for the exact part number. A family name alone does not establish that every size or depth is available.
- Machine and shank: Check the cutter’s specified drill compatibility, shank, and any required adapter against the drill manual.
- Number of plates: Use standard geometry for one piece of steel; use stack-cut geometry when drilling multiple pieces together.
Hougen’s annular cutter listings cover several distinct families and setups, including 12,000-Series, Xtreme Cobalt, Copperhead carbide-tipped cutters, RotaLoc, RotaLoc Plus, RotaCut, and Holcutter, as well as step drills, kits, adapters, and hole-enlarging pilots. Treat specifications as specific to a family and part number, not interchangeable across the line.

Confirm the machine model first, then match the cutter’s shank and mounting requirements. The product pages give examples of why this check matters:

| Product example | Published fit and specifications | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| RotaLoc cutters | Hougen identifies these for HMD130 and HMD115 models; the page describes 3/4-inch depth of cut, stack-cut geometry, and M42 HSS and carbide-tipped options. | Check the exact cutter style, size, and machine listing on the RotaLoc product page. |
| RotaLoc Plus | Hougen specifies HMD130 and HMD150 compatibility, stack-cut geometry, a 1-inch depth of cut, and a bayonet-style 5/8-inch twist-lock shank. The page describes an M42 HSS cutter. | Verify the model and mounting details on the RotaLoc Plus product page. Hougen notes an adapter path for some 3/4-inch-shank mag drills. |
These are examples, not specifications for every cutter in either family. If your drill is not named on the product listing, do not assume the cutter fits: consult the listing, the machine manual, or Hougen support before ordering. Hougen provides manuals and other documents through Product Support & Downloads.
Standard versus stack-cut geometry
Standard geometry is intended to cut one piece of steel. Stack-cut geometry is designed to drill multiple pieces at once. Hougen warns that using standard geometry through multiple pieces can risk breaking the cutter if the slug is not removed before continuing. For stacked plates, select a cutter explicitly identified as stack-cut and follow its operating instructions; do not treat “annular cutter” as a guarantee that the geometry suits a stack.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Choose diameter, depth, and cutter family together
First establish the finished hole diameter and the full thickness the cutter must pass through. Then check that the selected part number offers both that diameter and sufficient depth of cut. Do not infer capacity from a neighboring size or another family’s specification.
Hougen’s older 12,000-Series page describes hardened M2 high-speed steel cutters and lists size and depth options. For a 12,000-Series purchase, verify the needed dimensions and exact part number on the current listing. If the regular job uses multiple diameters, a cutter kit may be convenient, but compare its included sizes and pilots with the actual work: Hougen lists kit contents and depths on its cutter kits page.

Match cutter material to the workpiece and conditions
Hougen’s catalog compares cutter material, mounting, diameter and depth ranges, lubrication, and application hardness ratings. Use that comparison alongside the exact product listing to narrow the choice; neither a family label nor a general claim of durability replaces checking the material rating and operating guidance for the workpiece.
Hougen’s RotaCut page states that its sheet-metal hole cutters “cut holes 3x faster and last 10x longer” than twist drills or hole saws. That is a manufacturer claim: the reviewed product information does not establish comparison conditions or independent testing, so it should not be read as a verified result for every material or job. The official pages do not provide an independent comparative test establishing which Hougen family is most durable.

Use speed, feed, and lubrication as job-specific settings
Hougen says its suggested speeds and feeds are starting points that vary with the application and workpiece condition. Difficult-to-machine materials require reduced feed rates, so a single speed or feed should not be treated as universal. Consult Hougen’s technical cutter information along with the instructions for the exact cutter and drill. For a difficult or unusual application, Hougen directs users to its engineering department for guidance.

- Adapter: Use only an adapter path specified for the cutter and drill combination.
- Hole-enlarging pilot: Consider one only when the operation calls for enlarging an existing hole and the relevant product guidance supports it.
- Sharpening: Hougen lists sharpening equipment as an accessory; check compatibility and cutter instructions before relying on resharpening.
These accessories support a correctly selected setup; none removes the need to verify the cutter’s part number, fit, and operating instructions.
