When you use all your high-speed hotspot data, the connection often continues at a reduced speed until your billing cycle resets—but the exact speed, any charges, and whether you can add more data depend on your carrier and plan. Check your account’s usage and hotspot terms before assuming the hotspot will stop or that extra data is available.
What happens after you reach your hotspot limit?
Many plans keep the hotspot connected but reduce its speed for the rest of the billing cycle. Other plan types may have different rules, including options to buy additional high-speed data or change plans. There is no single post-limit speed that applies to every carrier or plan.
For example, AT&T says hotspot speed slows to a maximum of 128 Kbps after the plan’s hotspot data is used, unless additional hotspot data is purchased. T-Mobile says speed is reduced until the billing cycle ends. Verizon’s support pages list different reduced speeds for different plans. These are carrier-stated examples, not a guarantee for every customer. The pages were checked October 7, 2026; that is the check date, not a claimed publication date.

How carrier examples differ
The following U.S. examples illustrate why you need to check the exact plan. Plan names, allowances, offers, and eligibility can change; consult your account for current terms.

| Carrier and plan context | What the support page says after high-speed data is used | Additional data or plan options |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T hotspot allowance | Maximum 128 Kbps after the plan’s hotspot data is used. | AT&T says customers can purchase additional hotspot data; availability and terms depend on the account. |
| T-Mobile hotspot allotment | Speed is reduced until the billing cycle ends. | The support page describes a 10 GB Mobile Hotspot Data Pass for eligible Experience and Go5G plans. It supplements the plan’s monthly bucket; only one pass can be active at a time, and another starts when the current pass is depleted or expires after 30 days, whichever comes first. |
| Verizon prepaid hotspot/router plans covered by its FAQ | After the high-speed allotment, the page specifies 3 Mbps on certain 5G Ultra Wideband plans or 600 Kbps on certain 5G/4G LTE plans. | The FAQ says these prepaid hotspot/router plans cannot buy more high-speed data, though customers may change plans. |
| Verizon phone-hotspot plan examples | Simplicity: up to 1 Mbps after 10 GB. Unlimited Ultimate: 4 Mbps after 200 GB. Unlimited Plus: 3 Mbps on 5G Ultra Wideband or 600 Kbps on 5G/4G LTE after 30 GB. | These are examples from Verizon’s FAQ; confirm the terms attached to your account. |
These figures come from carrier support pages, not independent speed tests. A network can also be busy, so a slow connection by itself does not prove that the hotspot allowance is exhausted. AT&T lists both congestion and a used allowance as possible explanations for slow hotspot service. T-Mobile says tethering may be deprioritized relative to on-device data when network demand competes.
What can you still do at reduced speed?
Basic tasks may remain usable, but the experience depends on the reduced speed, network conditions, and how much data an app uses. Verizon notes that app performance varies with data use and that video and audio streaming may be affected on its prepaid hotspot/router plans. Large downloads, high-resolution video, and other data-heavy activity are particularly likely to struggle at low speeds; actual results vary.

What to do when your hotspot slows down
- Check your usage and plan terms. Open your carrier account or app and review hotspot usage, the plan’s high-speed allowance, and the billing-cycle reset date. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon each direct customers to account-based usage information.
- Confirm that the allowance is actually exhausted. If usage is below the cap, check for network congestion or other service conditions before changing plans. AT&T identifies a busy network as another possible reason for slow hotspot speeds; T-Mobile describes possible deprioritization of tethering during competing network demand.
- Review account-specific ways to restore high-speed access. Depending on the carrier and plan, an eligible account may offer a data pass, add-on, boost, or plan change. Availability, cost, and whether an option restores hotspot speed vary, so check the current account offer rather than relying on a general carrier example.
- If you need a precise answer, identify your plan. The carrier, plan name, prepaid or postpaid status, and reset date determine which terms apply. Without them, the exact reduced speed, charges, and available data options cannot be established.
Why buying a hotspot device may not solve the problem
A hotspot or router provides a way to share a mobile connection; it does not replenish the carrier’s data allowance. The data still comes from an eligible carrier plan. If your allowance is exhausted, the relevant remedy is an account-level data option or plan change when one is available, not hardware alone.
