Yes, hotel Wi-Fi can be reasonable to use with a trustworthy VPN that encrypts the traffic you need to protect. A VPN can make that traffic unreadable to someone monitoring the local network, but it does not secure every app automatically, verify that a hotel login page is genuine, or make you anonymous. If a suitable phone hotspot is available, the FBI recommends using it instead of hotel Wi-Fi when possible.
What a VPN changes on hotel Wi-Fi
A VPN routes your device’s internet traffic through servers operated by the VPN provider. When the VPN encrypts the connection between your device and its server, someone monitoring the local Wi-Fi network should not be able to read the protected traffic. The Federal Trade Commission explains that a VPN typically obscures traffic content from a public Wi-Fi provider, but does not make the user anonymous: FTC guidance on VPN apps.
That protection depends on the VPN actually encrypting the relevant traffic. The FTC cautions that some VPN apps use protocols that do not encrypt traffic, or encrypt only some of it. Do not assume that every app or connection is covered just because the VPN says it is connected.

- A deceptive login page: A VPN cannot tell you whether a hotel sign-in page is legitimate.
- A dishonest website: Encryption does not prove that a site is trustworthy. Scammers can operate HTTPS websites, too.
- Information you hand over: A VPN does not stop a website from identifying you through details you submit, such as account credentials or personal information.
- The VPN provider’s access: The VPN provider becomes a party you must trust because your traffic is routed through its servers. Some apps have requested unexpected permissions or shared data with third parties.
How risky is hotel Wi-Fi?
Hotel networks bring together guests who do not control the network and generally cannot inspect its security. In an advisory dated October 6, 2020, the FBI and Internet Crime Complaint Center described possible risks including traffic monitoring or redirection, false hotel login pages, and lookalike networks. The advisory provides risk guidance, not an estimate of how often attacks happen; these examples do not mean hotel Wi-Fi attacks are common or inevitable. See the FBI/IC3 hotel telework advisory.

A room number or password used to access a guest network does not, by itself, make the internet connection secure. At the same time, the FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is widespread across websites. That general reassurance does not certify a particular hotel’s network or protect you from a fake login page, an unsafe choice, or traffic that is not encrypted. Read the FTC’s public Wi-Fi guidance.
Choose between hotel Wi-Fi and a phone hotspot

This is a practical choice, not a guarantee that one option is universally better. If you cannot verify the hotel network, need to handle sensitive information, or have an appropriate hotspot available, the hotspot is a useful alternative. The FBI’s advice is in its hotel telework advisory.

Use hotel Wi-Fi more carefully
- Verify the network before joining. Ask hotel staff or check an official hotel notice for the exact Wi-Fi name and login procedure. Criminals can set up hotspots with similar names; CISA’s public Wi-Fi search-result guidance advises confirming the hotspot name and login process. Do not treat a room number or access password as proof that the connection is secure.
- Follow work requirements. On a work device, follow your employer’s rules. If you use hotel Wi-Fi for telework, the FBI recommends a reputable VPN when possible to encrypt network traffic.
- Keep browser encryption protections in place. Look for HTTPS or the browser’s lock indicator, and do not bypass browser security or certificate warnings. A secure connection to a site does not show that the site itself is honest.
- Limit automatic and discoverable connections. Turn off Wi-Fi auto-reconnect for the hotel network, keep device software updated, set the device to non-discoverable, and disable Bluetooth when you are not using it.
- Be cautious with sensitive activity. Avoid banking or entering sensitive personal information on hotel Wi-Fi when possible. If you must access sensitive accounts, the FBI advises using multi-factor authentication.
- Use a hotspot when it makes sense. If a phone hotspot is available and suitable, use it instead of the hotel network.
How to assess a VPN before relying on it
Choosing a VPN is a trust decision, not just a matter of switching on a feature. The FTC recommends researching the app, reviewing its permissions, checking whether it encrypts information, and reading its terms and privacy policy for data-sharing practices. Consider these questions before relying on one:

- Does the provider explain what traffic the app encrypts, and are there limits by app or connection type?
- Do the app’s permissions make sense for what it does?
- Do its privacy policy and terms explain what information it collects and whether it shares information with third parties?
Without satisfactory answers, do not assume the VPN is protecting all your traffic or that the provider is a safe place to shift your trust.

Bottom line
Hotel Wi-Fi with a verified, trustworthy VPN can reduce what someone on the local network can read, but it is not a complete security shield. Confirm the network, keep HTTPS protections and device settings in place, and use a suitable phone hotspot instead when available.
