Neither booking directly with a hotel nor using an online travel agency (OTA) is always cheaper or more flexible. Compare the exact property, room, dates, total price, cancellation rules and benefits before paying. Choose the offer whose terms best fit your trip—not the channel with the lowest-looking headline rate.

What counts as direct booking, and what is an OTA?

A direct booking is made through a hotel’s own reservation channels, such as its website, app, reservations team or front desk. An online travel agency is a separate company that displays or sells travel reservations, including hotel stays. The hotel remains the place you stay, but the booking channel can affect the rate, the rules attached to it, loyalty eligibility and which provider’s terms govern changes or cancellations.

“Direct” can have a specific meaning in a hotel loyalty program. Marriott’s Help Center, updated July 23, 2026, defines the official channels that may qualify a reservation for Bonvoy benefits, subject to the rate and program terms. That is Marriott’s policy; it should not be treated as a rule for every hotel group. Check the program rules for the brand and rate you intend to book.

The practical choice is not between two fixed kinds of deal. Hotels and OTAs can show different offers, and each offer can have its own payment, cancellation and inclusion rules. Compare the actual reservations available for your dates.

How to compare the offers fairly

A nightly price is not enough to identify the better deal. Two listings may look similar while covering different rooms, guest counts, meals, fees or refund rights. Marriott’s best-rate guarantee criteria illustrate why exact matching matters: its comparison requires equivalence across attributes such as property, room, guest count, dates, inclusions and cancellation conditions.

  1. Match the stay. Confirm the same property, check-in and check-out dates, number of nights and number of guests. Check that the room and bed category are genuinely comparable, not just described with similar wording.
  2. Match what is included. Check whether breakfast, resort or destination charges, taxes, parking or other listed extras are included or payable separately. Compare the total payable for the whole stay, not just a nightly figure.
  3. Check when and how you pay. Read whether payment is due now or later, whether a deposit is required, and what the listing says about the payment method and refund conditions.
  4. Read the cancellation and change terms. Note the precise cancellation deadline, the time zone if one is shown, any fee after the deadline, and whether you can change dates. Do not assume a booking is refundable simply because another offer for the same hotel is.
  5. Check loyalty eligibility. If points, elite-night credit or member benefits matter, verify whether the particular channel and rate qualify under the hotel program’s current terms. A displayed member rate is not, by itself, proof that a third-party reservation earns benefits.
  6. Identify who handles the reservation. Read the booking terms to see which provider you must contact for changes, cancellations or support. Do not infer that one channel will resolve problems faster.

Keep the two final offers open side by side, or record their terms before leaving either page. A useful comparison includes the complete price and the exact rule that applies if your plans change. If a listing leaves an important item unclear, seek clarification from the provider named in that offer before paying.

What can differ between booking channels?

Decision point Direct hotel booking OTA booking What to verify
Price and availability May differ from offers shown elsewhere; no universal lower-price rule is established. May show different prices, availability or conditions from the hotel’s own offer. Same property, dates, room, guests, inclusions and full payable amount.
Cancellation and changes Set by the rules attached to that reservation. Set by the rules attached to that reservation; Booking.com says the property determines applicable cancellation fees and policy. Deadline, fee, refund conditions and whether date changes are allowed.
Hotel loyalty benefits May qualify when the channel, rate and program terms meet the hotel’s requirements. Eligibility depends on the hotel program. Why the lowest headline rate may not be the best offer

Start with the total price you would actually pay for the stay. A lower nightly amount can be offset by different inclusions or charges, or it can buy a less flexible reservation. Conversely, an offer with a higher displayed price may include something you would otherwise pay for separately. The right comparison is between the full cost and terms for equivalent stays.

Cancellation rights also have value. If your dates are uncertain, compare the cost of a refundable rate with the cost and conditions of a non-refundable one. A cheaper non-refundable offer is not a like-for-like substitute for a refundable rate: it transfers more of the financial risk to you if plans change. Whether that trade-off makes sense depends on your confidence in the itinerary and the fee or refund rule shown for each booking.

Do not assume a hotel will match a lower OTA listing just because the property and dates look the same. Marriott’s best-rate guarantee comparison requires a close match across core attributes, including room, guest count, inclusions and cancellation conditions. A lower price for a different room or a stricter rate does not establish that the offers are equivalent under those criteria.

Prices can vary by channel and jurisdiction

Different prices and conditions across booking channels are possible. UK Government guidance from the Competition and Markets Authority, published July 5, 2017, says hotels may set different prices, terms, availability and conditions across OTAs, and may offer lower rates offline or through private groups. That page is guidance from 2017, not an exhaustive statement of current contract or competition law everywhere.

For the European Union, the European Commission’s September 28, 2026 factsheet on the Digital Markets Act (DMA) says Booking.com must allow accommodation partners covered by the rule to offer different prices, availability, inventory or commercial conditions on other online channels, including their own websites. This point concerns the DMA’s scope and covered partners; it is not a worldwide pricing rule and does not guarantee that a hotel will offer a lower direct rate.

These jurisdiction-specific points reinforce a practical habit: check the live offers available to you rather than relying on a blanket claim that hotels must price identically, or that one channel is inherently cheapest.

Cancellation policies: inspect the individual rate

There is no safe channel-wide shortcut for deciding which booking is easier to cancel. The reservation’s own policy determines what you can do and what it may cost. Booking.com says the property sets the cancellation policy for the booking and determines any cancellation fee. Its non-refundable offers can carry charges and may not allow date changes.

Expedia’s Canada terms direct customers to the relevant travel provider’s rules and restrictions; those terms also say an administration fee may apply in some cases. This is a qualification tied to those terms, not a claim that every Expedia booking or every OTA reservation has such a fee.

Before submitting payment, find the policy on the final offer or booking review screen. Look for the exact date and time through which cancellation is permitted, whether a fee applies before or after that point, and whether a refund is full, partial or unavailable. If the policy allows changes, check whether a change can trigger a price difference or other charge; do not assume that cancellation rights also include free date changes.

Loyalty points and hotel benefits

For travelers who value points, elite-night credit or other membership benefits, verify eligibility before comparing prices. The hotel’s loyalty terms may make the booking channel decisive, but policies differ by brand and can distinguish between reservation types or rates.

Marriott’s stated policy

Marriott’s official-channel guidance, updated July 23, 2026, says reservations through its defined official channels can be eligible for Bonvoy benefits when the rate qualifies and program terms are met. Marriott also says third-party online retailer reservations are generally ineligible for points and elite-night credit, subject to the complete program terms and exceptions. These statements apply to Marriott’s program; they do not establish the policy of another hotel chain.

How to use loyalty terms in a comparison

  • Check the hotel program’s current terms for the exact kind of reservation you are considering.
  • Confirm that the rate itself qualifies; booking through an eligible channel alone may not satisfy every program condition.
  • Compare benefits you would actually use with the difference in the total reservation price. Do not assign a value to points or status benefits you do not expect to receive.
  • If the terms are unclear, ask the hotel or loyalty program to confirm eligibility for that specific rate and channel before booking.

Who should consider each channel?

Consider a direct booking when hotel-program eligibility matters

If you are relying on a hotel’s points or elite-night credit, begin by checking the brand’s official-channel and qualifying-rate rules. A direct offer may fit those rules, but confirm the rate’s eligibility and compare its full price and cancellation terms against alternatives. Loyalty benefits do not automatically make a more expensive or less suitable reservation the better choice.

Consider an OTA offer when its exact terms suit your needs

An OTA listing can be a reasonable choice if it offers the room and conditions you want at a competitive total price. Review its cancellation policy, payment schedule and inclusions just as carefully as you would for a hotel offer. Check which provider the reservation terms direct you to for service; the evidence does not establish that OTAs or hotels universally provide faster or better support.

When flexibility is the priority

Compare refundable offers by their actual deadline and fee, not by the word “flexible” in a headline. Make sure the policy covers the change you may need: canceling, shifting dates, changing guest details or adjusting the length of stay can have different rules. If you cannot identify the relevant rule in the rate conditions, do not treat flexibility as confirmed.

When the lowest verified total is the priority

Compare equivalent rooms and dates, then add all stated taxes, charges and paid extras needed for the same stay. Decide whether a stricter cancellation condition is an acceptable trade-off. A rate that is cheaper only because it excludes an inclusion or removes refund rights may not be the lowest-cost option for the trip you actually need.

A practical decision sequence before paying

  1. Set your non-negotiables. Decide what matters most: a particular room, a refundable rate, a loyalty benefit, a payment schedule or the lowest total for equivalent terms.
  2. Find comparable offers. Search the hotel’s direct channel and the OTA offer you are considering for the same property, dates, guests and room category.
  3. Normalize the price. Compare the total payable and matching inclusions, not just the nightly rate.
  4. Read the rate conditions. Record the payment timing, cancellation deadline and fee, refund status, and whether date changes are permitted.
  5. Check program eligibility if relevant. Verify the hotel brand’s current rules for the reservation channel and rate.
  6. Confirm the service contact. Identify the provider named in the terms for booking changes, cancellations and support.
  7. Choose the offer that fits your priorities. If two offers are not equivalent, treat them as different products and make the trade-off explicit rather than calling one a simple price match.
  8. Save the confirmation and terms. Keep the confirmation number, price breakdown and applicable policy so you can refer to the rules attached to the reservation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by the first price shown. A search result or nightly rate may not include the full stay cost or the same benefits.
  • Assuming a hotel’s direct rate is always lower. Channel offers can vary; compare current, equivalent reservations.
  • Assuming an OTA rate is automatically less flexible. The policy for the selected rate—not the channel label alone—determines cancellation and change conditions.
  • Treating “free cancellation” as unlimited flexibility. Find the deadline and confirm whether changes, rather than only cancellation, are permitted.
  • Expecting loyalty credit without checking eligibility. Confirm both the channel and qualifying-rate conditions for the specific hotel program.
  • Assuming support responsibility. Follow the contact instructions in the reservation terms rather than expecting the hotel or intermediary to handle every request.
  • Comparing unlike rooms. Different bed types, occupancy limits, inclusions or cancellation terms can explain a price difference.

Bottom line

There is no universally best booking channel. Choose between a hotel’s direct offer and an OTA listing by matching the stay details, comparing the full price and inclusions, reading the exact cancellation and payment rules, and checking loyalty eligibility where it matters. The best deal is the one whose verified terms fit your trip—not simply the one with the lowest headline price.
