HostGator is the better starting point if you want lower-cost shared hosting and can manage your own WordPress upkeep; WP Engine is the better fit if you want a managed WordPress platform with maintenance features and WordPress-focused support. They are not equivalent tiers: compare the plan, site count, capacity, renewal price and work you expect to handle—not just the advertised entry price.
What is the main difference between HostGator and WP Engine?
HostGator sells shared web hosting as well as a separate WordPress hosting product. Its plans provide WordPress installation and documented site and resource limits, while leaving more administration to the site owner. WP Engine is a managed WordPress platform: its listed features include backups, staging, security measures and caching, with plan-specific capacity and support.
That distinction matters more than a simple “which is faster?” ranking. The available product pages describe each company’s own offerings; they do not establish an independent speed, uptime or support-quality winner. WP Engine’s explanation that managed hosting uses optimized infrastructure, caching, content delivery networks and monitoring is the vendor’s description, not a head-to-head test (WP Engine’s managed-hosting overview).
How do the plans and capacities compare?
HostGator: shared and WordPress hosting
HostGator’s feature summary lists its WordPress plans as Baby (20 websites and 20 GB SSD), Business (50 websites and 50 GB SSD), and Pro (100 websites and 100 GB SSD). It also lists one-click WordPress installation, Cloudflare CDN, WordPress Dashboard, FTP and email access, up to 25% server-resource use, and 25 simultaneous processes. These are published plan limits, not promises about real-world performance; check the current terms for the plan you are considering.
#1 Best Overall
Shared hosting is a separate product category. HostGator lists Cloudflare CDN on shared Baby and Business plans, and its documentation describes cPanel and broader Linux-hosting capabilities. Do not assume the shared plans have every feature or limit listed for WordPress hosting.
WP Engine: managed WordPress capacity tiers
WP Engine’s current plans page groups managed hosting into Essential, Core and Enterprise tiers. It lists ranges rather than a single configuration for some tiers:
Rank #2
| WP Engine tier | Sites | Estimated monthly visits | Storage | Bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 1–30 | 25,000–400,000 | 10–50 GB | 75 GB |
| Core | 30–50 | 400,000–800,000 | 50 GB–2 TB | 550 GB |
| Enterprise | 50+ | 800,000+ | 2 TB+ | 550 GB+ |
These are WP Engine’s stated plan capacities; visit counts are estimates, not a guarantee that every traffic pattern fits. Confirm the specific configuration with the provider, especially for traffic spikes or dynamic sites. The Essential Startup configuration is listed as one site, an estimated 25,000 visits per month, 10 GB local storage and 75 GB bandwidth.
Recommended Free Tools
WP Engine describes Essential environments as shared and Core and Enterprise resources as isolated. Its plan comparison lists SSL/SSH, security patching and plugin-risk scans, DDoS protection, automatic and on-demand backups, staging, and EverCache. Plugin and theme update automation and uptime monitoring are add-ons on Essential and included in the higher tiers shown. Check the exact package before purchase because features vary by configuration.
Rank #3
What do the prices mean over time?
Do not compare a HostGator promotional starting price directly with a WP Engine managed-plan price as if they bought the same service. HostGator’s shared-hosting page advertised offer prices of $2.75 per month for Hatchling, $3.95 for Baby and $5.95 for Business when accessed in the search result; those are introductory figures, not enduring rates. Its page described Hatchling as single-domain and Baby and Business as multi-domain, with one-click WordPress installs, SSL and domain inclusion.
HostGator’s price chart gives regular USD prices and says the full selected term is billed up front. The monthly breakdowns below are the term total divided by its months, not a month-to-month charge:
Rank #4
| HostGator shared plan | 1-month term | 1-year term | 3-year term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatchling | $17.59 | $158.27 total ($13.19/month) | $395.61 total ($10.99/month) |
| Baby | $24.19 | $224.27 total ($18.69/month) | $593.61 total ($16.49/month) |
| Business | $30.79 | $290.27 total ($24.19/month) | $791.61 total ($21.99/month) |
For HostGator’s WordPress category, its chart lists regular USD prices of $24.19 for one month, $224.27 for one year ($18.69 per month), or $593.61 for three years ($16.49 per month) for Baby; $30.79, $290.27 ($24.19 per month), or $791.61 ($21.99 per month) for Business; and $38.49, $382.67 ($31.89 per month), or $1,068.81 ($29.69 per month) for Pro, respectively. These are regular rates, not introductory offers. HostGator says promotional pricing remains until renewal, when regular pricing applies, so check the offer, renewal amount and billing term before signing up.

Its pricing notice lists core subscription prices in USD effective at the next renewal on or after March 11, 2026: Lite $17, Startup $35, Professional $65, Growth $130 and Scale $330 per month. These are renewal prices, not a like-for-like offer comparison with HostGator. The plans page separately says first-year pricing and coupons apply to new customers buying Essential plans only, and that annual Essential billing saves 20%; confirm the selected country, currency and checkout terms before relying on an offer.
Best Value
For a useful comparison, total the same time period for the exact plans you need, including the initial payment and later renewal. For WP Engine, confirm the Essential configuration or other tier, billing schedule and potential overages; for HostGator, use the actual promotion and its regular renewal price. Both figures can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which host should you choose for your situation?
Choose HostGator as your initial shortlist if…
- Your site is relatively simple and your priority is keeping hosting costs down.
- You are comfortable handling WordPress administration and upkeep yourself.
- The plan’s site count and documented resource limits suit your workload.
- You have checked the full upfront term charge and the regular renewal rate, rather than relying on the introductory monthly headline.
Choose WP Engine as your initial shortlist if…
- Your site depends on WordPress and you value a managed platform, backups, staging and listed security features.
- You want access to its stated 24/7 technical support and the selected plan’s WordPress-focused services.
- The site count, estimated visits, storage and bandwidth for your chosen tier fit your needs.
- The recurring price and any required add-ons work for your budget.
If you manage multiple sites
Compare total cost across the whole portfolio, not just a one-site starting price. Check the included site count, capacity, how each site can be accessed or handed off, and the support path. HostGator documents site counts by plan, while WP Engine lists tiered site ranges; those are different measures from traffic capacity, so do not treat them as interchangeable.
If the site is e-commerce or revenue-critical
Ask each provider how the proposed plan handles expected traffic spikes, what recovery objectives apply, and which service-level terms are part of the specific offer. WP Engine lists a 99.99% uptime guarantee for Core and Enterprise; that is a plan-specific guarantee, not a measured uptime result or a claim that applies to every tier. The reviewed product information does not establish which host is more reliable in practice.
Quick Recap
What should you verify before buying?
- Price and term: Confirm currency, billing period, amount charged upfront, introductory offer conditions and renewal price.
- Capacity: Match your site count, storage and expected traffic to the selected configuration. WP Engine calls visit counts estimates; ask about spikes and dynamic workloads.
- Included management: Verify which updates, backups, security functions, staging and monitoring are included versus optional on the quoted plan.
- Access and flexibility: Consider whether broader shared-hosting tools such as cPanel fit your workflow, or whether a managed WordPress environment is a better trade-off.
- Support and continuity: Confirm the support channel, recovery process and service-level terms that apply to your exact plan.
