HostGator can be a candidate for a small Python site, but shared hosting is not a safe default for every Python framework. Its shared-hosting pages advertise Python, SSH and Passenger, yet its software list places Django among software not installed or supported for shared hosting. HostGator specifically advertises Python (Django) and root access on VPS plans. Confirm the runtime and deployment requirements for your project before choosing a plan.
Does HostGator support Python hosting?
HostGator’s shared-hosting feature page lists Python and SSH access. Its software list also identifies Passenger as available for Python. These are provider-stated features, not confirmation that every framework, dependency or deployment pattern will work on a particular account. Check the requirements of your application against the plan and runtime HostGator will assign.
HostGator’s versions page returned different Python versions for different server operating systems: Python 3.9.21 for CentOS 7 and Python 2.7.5 for AlmaLinux 9. The page does not say which operating system or runtime a new shared customer will receive. Ask HostGator to confirm the account’s actual Python version and dependency support before committing. HostGator’s software and program versions page is the relevant reference.

Do not assume Django is supported on shared hosting just because Python is listed. HostGator’s software list names Django in its not-installed-or-supported section for the shared environment. Its VPS page separately advertises Python (Django), along with full root access. For a Django project, VPS is therefore the more clearly documented route, though you should verify the current configuration and management responsibilities before ordering.

Passenger’s availability for Python is useful evidence about a shared-hosting deployment option, but it does not override the shared software list’s Django caveat. Confirm your framework, process model and required system packages with the provider. See the software list and VPS plan page.
Shared hosting and VPS: what changes?
| Decision factor | Shared hosting | VPS hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Python and framework evidence | Python and Passenger are listed; Django appears in the not-installed-or-supported list for shared hosting. | HostGator advertises Python (Django). |
| System control | No root access, according to HostGator’s comparison chart. | Full root access is advertised. |
| Published resource detail | Up to 25% of server resources and 25 simultaneous processes, per HostGator’s shared-hosting summary. | Specific resources depend on the selected VPS configuration; confirm the current plan details. |
| Administration | Less system-level control; the provider manages the shared server environment. | Root access allows custom configuration and also entails more responsibility for server setup and maintenance. |
| Performance evidence | No independent speed, uptime or application-performance measurements are established by the cited provider pages. | |
The 25% resource and 25-process figures are provider-published limits, not a benchmark or guarantee of application capacity. A light site may fit within shared hosting if its exact runtime and deployment method are confirmed. Projects that need root access, custom system packages, more control over the app server, Django support, or resources beyond shared limits point toward VPS.

What do HostGator’s shared plans cost?
The following are regular USD prices listed in HostGator’s price chart, not introductory promotions. HostGator’s monthly breakdown for annual and three-year terms reflects the full term billed upfront. Promotions, checkout totals, add-ons and renewal rates can change, so verify the current figures before purchase.

| Plan | One month | One year, total (monthly breakdown) | Three years, total (monthly breakdown) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatchling | $17.59 | $158.27 ($13.19/month) | $395.61 ($10.99/month) |
| Baby | $24.19 | $224.27 ($18.69/month) | $593.61 ($16.49/month) |
| Business | $30.79 | $290.27 ($24.19/month) | $791.61 ($21.99/month) |
HostGator says introductory promotions apply only to the initial term and renew at regular rates. Its shared-hosting page directs buyers to the site for current introductory prices. Compare what is charged upfront with what renewal will cost rather than relying on a promotional monthly headline. See the hosting price chart and shared hosting page.
How to decide whether HostGator fits your Python project
- Identify the framework and runtime. Write down the Python version, framework, dependencies and any system packages the application requires.
- Confirm the actual shared environment. Ask which operating system and Python runtime your account will use, and whether your dependencies are available there.
- Confirm the deployment path. Ask whether your specific app can run using the documented Passenger support, and whether its process model is compatible with the plan.
- Check resource needs. Compare expected usage with HostGator’s published shared limits of up to 25% of server resources and 25 simultaneous processes.
- Choose the control level. If you need Django support, root access, custom system configuration or more server control, assess VPS instead of assuming shared hosting can provide it.
- Compare the complete cost. Check the current checkout total, term length, add-ons and regular renewal price for the plan you are considering.
What the documentation does—and does not—show
HostGator’s published pages establish that shared hosting advertises Python, SSH and Passenger, while VPS advertises Python (Django) and root access. They also identify shared resource and process limits, and show that reported Python versions vary by operating system.
Those pages do not establish which runtime a new account will receive, whether a particular Python application will deploy successfully, or its speed and uptime in practice. This is a documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on application test. HostGator’s hosting feature summary and comparison chart provide additional plan distinctions; the chart says Cloud, Reseller and Optimized WordPress plans are no longer offered to new signups.
