Horrorria is a Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 modpack built for Forge. The current listed release is version 3.8, dated September 5, 2026. Install the 3.8 client archive through a launcher that supports CurseForge modpacks, give Minecraft at least 6 GB of allocated memory, and use the matching 3.8 server archive when hosting multiplayer.

This guide covers client installation, version checks, self-hosting, managed hosting, backups, upgrades, and the failures most likely to prevent players from joining. The project page does not publish a guaranteed player count or CPU requirement, so capacity depends on the host machine, world activity, and number of simultaneous players.

Those version details matter because Forge modpacks are collections of exact mod files and configuration files. A client on one release and a server on another can have different registries, scripts, or settings even when both display Minecraft 1.20.1. Match the complete Horrorria release, not just the Minecraft version.

What kind of experience is Horrorria?

Horrorria is designed around psychological and survival horror rather than a conventional building-focused pack. The creator describes From the Fog-style elements involving Herobrine, a Cave Dweller, Slenderman, darkness, stalking, footsteps, flickering torches, and jump scares. CurseForge categories also identify the project as horror, hardcore, multiplayer, combat/PvP, and exploration.

Expect sound and lighting events that may appear random, hostile encounters in caves or at night, and moments intended to startle rather than provide a predictable combat pattern. Headphones, a brighter room, or lower volume can make the pack more manageable for players who are sensitive to sudden audio or visual effects. These are experience choices, not installation faults.

Before you install

Use the Java Edition launcher path

Horrorria targets Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock Edition launchers and Bedrock add-ons cannot load a Forge Java modpack. Install or open a launcher that supports CurseForge modpacks and ZIP imports before downloading the pack.

Check the release on the project page

Version 3.8 is the current release listed for this guide, but the files page is versioned and can change. Re-check the official Horrorria project and files pages immediately before downloading. Confirm that the client file is the 3.8 archive and that the Minecraft and loader labels read 1.20.1 Forge.

Reserve memory

The creator states that “the modpack needs 6gb of ram or more.” Treat 6 GB as the minimum allocation for the game process, not as the total physical memory in the computer. Your operating system and other applications need memory as well. A computer with only 8 GB of physical RAM may need browsers and background applications closed; a system with more physical memory gives the launcher more headroom.

Prepare a safe world workflow

  • Keep an untouched copy of every world before changing the modpack release.
  • Record the exact client archive and Forge profile used for each world.
  • Do not open a valuable world in a newer release until you have a backup and have checked the release notes or project comments.
  • For a server, plan where world, configuration, and log backups will be stored before inviting players.

Install the Horrorria client

  1. Install a compatible launcher. Use a launcher with CurseForge modpack support or a documented ZIP-import function. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft Java Edition.
  2. Import the client archive. Choose the launcher’s import or add-modpack option and select [ Horrorria ]-3.8.zip. Do not rename files inside the archive or merge them into a different profile.
  3. Confirm the profile identity. Open the new profile’s settings and verify Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 and Forge. If the launcher proposes another Minecraft version, cancel the installation and re-check the selected archive.
  4. Set memory to at least 6 GB. In the profile’s Java or memory settings, enter an allocation of 6 GB or more. Leave enough physical RAM for the operating system. If the launcher asks for megabytes, 6 GB is commonly entered as 6144 MB; use the unit conversion shown by your launcher.
  5. Launch once without joining a server. The first launch may take longer while Forge creates libraries, configs, and resource caches. Stay at the title screen long enough to confirm that the game reaches the menu without a crash.
  6. Close the game and inspect the profile. Make sure the launcher is using the imported Horrorria instance, not a vanilla 1.20.1 profile or another Forge instance. Keep the instance isolated so another pack cannot overwrite its mods or configurations.
  7. Join only after the operator confirms the server release. Enter the server address supplied by the operator after verifying that both sides use the same Horrorria archive release.

Verify a client before multiplayer

When a player cannot connect, first establish what is actually installed. In the launcher, capture the profile name, Minecraft version, Forge version, and pack release. The archive name should identify 3.8 for the server described here. If the launcher has a “repair” or “reinstall” action, use it on that profile rather than copying individual mods from another pack.

A successful local launch proves only that the client can load. It does not prove that its configuration and registry data match a server. The server operator should provide the exact release and, if necessary, the checksum or original archive so every player installs the same file.

Set up a self-hosted Horrorria server

Self-hosting gives the operator control over files, backups, access lists, and update timing. It also makes the operator responsible for Java and Forge installation, firewall rules, port access, crash recovery, and keeping the machine online.

1. Create a clean server directory

Make a new directory used only for this server. Avoid placing it inside a client instance, a downloads folder that is automatically cleaned, or a directory shared by several modpacks. A separate directory prevents old mods and configs from contaminating the new installation.

2. Obtain the matching server pack

From the Horrorria files page, download [ Horrorria ] -serveur-3.8.zip, identified as a Minecraft 1.20 Server Pack and dated September 5, 2026. The server archive is not interchangeable with the client archive. Extract the server archive into the clean server directory, preserving its folder structure.

3. Install the required Forge server files

Use the Forge 1.20.1 server installation included or referenced by the server pack’s instructions. Run the installer or launch script supplied with that pack rather than mixing files from a different Forge version. The exact generated file names can differ by installer and operating system; the important check is that the server starts as Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1.

Mattel Games UNO Minecraft Card Game with Storage Tin,Ages 7+
  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

4. Accept the Minecraft EULA

Start the server once. Minecraft normally creates an eula.txt file and stops. Read the EULA, set eula=true only if you agree to it, save the file, and start the Forge server again. If the server stops immediately, read the console output before changing files.

5. Set an appropriate memory limit

The modpack’s published baseline is 6 GB or more. Configure the Forge-generated launch script or service to provide at least that amount to the server process, while leaving memory for the operating system and any panel or backup process. Do not assign all physical RAM to Java. The project does not publish a guaranteed player count, so increase resources only after observing actual use and keeping crash-free backups.

6. Start and test locally

Run the server launch script with the graphical interface disabled if the script supports a headless option. Wait for a message indicating that the server has finished loading before connecting. Join from the same computer using the local address supplied by the server software, then walk, enter a cave, and allow hostile events to load. This catches missing files before you expose the server to friends.

7. Configure access and network reachability

Set the server name, difficulty, and player permissions in the generated configuration files only after the first successful start. For friends outside your home network, allow the Minecraft server port through the operating system firewall and forward that port on the router to the host computer. The exact router menus vary. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a network arrangement that provides reachable hosting or choose managed hosting.

8. Give players the correct connection details

Provide the public address or DNS name and port, plus the exact Horrorria release. Never publish the server address together with an administrator account or operating-system credentials. Keep operator privileges limited to trusted accounts.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

The right choice depends less on the pack name than on who will maintain the machine. Use the following comparison before committing to a setup.

Consideration Self-hosted machine Managed server
Upfront cost Uses hardware and internet service you already have; additional hardware or power costs are your responsibility. Usually requires a recurring plan; current price and availability depend on the provider and selected region.
Network work You manage firewall rules, router forwarding, public addressing, and uptime. The host normally supplies a reachable address and handles much of the network administration.
File control Direct control over mods, configs, scripts, worlds, and backup destinations. Control depends on the panel and plan; verify that you can upload the Horrorria server archive and download backups.
CPU and RAM Limited by your machine; the project publishes a 6 GB memory baseline but no CPU or player guarantee. Limited by the selected plan; confirm that at least 6 GB is available to the server process and that CPU allocation suits your group.
Maintenance You install updates, monitor logs, restart after crashes, and secure the operating system. The provider may simplify restarts and monitoring, but pack updates, world backups, and support policies still require review.

Do not choose a plan solely by storage or advertised player slots. Ask whether the stated RAM is dedicated to your instance, whether backups are downloadable, and whether the panel supports a custom Forge server pack. Horrorria’s published information is insufficient to promise a particular number of players on any plan.

Using the official CurseForge hosted-server workflow

CurseForge’s hosted-server documentation says that CurseForge Servers can turn a modpack with a matching server pack into a hosted multiplayer server in a few clicks. Its documented flow is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the modpack.
  2. Choose a hosting plan.
  3. Choose a region.
  4. Enter server details.
  5. Complete payment.

The service is powered by Shockbyte and uses Tebex for billing, according to that documentation. Before paying, search the current catalog to confirm that Horrorria is available and select a plan that meets the pack’s 6 GB baseline. Availability, regions, plan limits, billing terms, and catalog entries can change, so treat the checkout screen and current provider terms as authoritative.

If Horrorria is not listed, use a provider workflow that explicitly accepts its Forge 1.20.1 server archive, or self-host. Do not upload only the client ZIP to a panel that requires a server pack; the two archives serve different purposes.

Backups, updates, and rollbacks

Back up before every change

Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory, and preserve the relevant configuration and server-pack version alongside the backup. A running copy can miss recently written region data. Keep at least one backup off the server machine so a disk failure or accidental deletion does not remove every copy.

Update as a controlled migration

  1. Read the current Horrorria files page and identify the target release.
  2. Copy the existing world and configuration into a dated backup location.
  3. Install the new release in a separate server directory rather than overwriting the working directory.
  4. Start the new server with the same access controls and test it privately.
  5. Join with a client imported from the matching release and inspect known areas, inventories, and permissions.
  6. Only then schedule the public switch. Keep the old directory until the new server has proved stable.

The files page shows versioned releases, so a rollback is possible only if you retained the older server files and a compatible world backup. Never assume that opening a world in a newer pack can be undone by simply replacing the mod files.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The launcher crashes before the title screen

  • Confirm the profile is Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge, not vanilla or another loader.
  • Check that the imported archive is [ Horrorria ]-3.8.zip and was not partially extracted or modified.
  • Raise the allocation to at least 6 GB if it is lower, while ensuring the computer has sufficient physical memory.
  • Use the launcher’s repair or reinstall function for that instance. Do not copy random mods from another profile.
  • Record the crash-report path and the first “Caused by” section before asking for help.

The game reaches the menu but freezes or exits during world loading

  • Allow the first launch extra time for Forge and resource caches.
  • Close memory-heavy applications and verify that the Java process is not being capped below the published baseline.
  • Test a new world. If a new world works but an old one fails, restore the old world from a backup rather than repeatedly opening it with different releases.
  • Check for a release mismatch if the problem began after an update.

The client says the server has missing mods or mismatched registries

  • Compare the complete Horrorria release on the client and server, not only “1.20.1.”
  • Verify that the server uses [ Horrorria ] -serveur-3.8.zip and the client uses [ Horrorria ]-3.8.zip.
  • Remove duplicate or manually added mods from the client instance.
  • Restart both sides after changing files; Forge reads many registries only at startup.

The server is running but friends cannot connect

  • Test locally first so you know the Forge process completed startup.
  • Check the operating-system firewall and router forwarding for the server port.
  • Confirm friends are using the public address rather than the host’s private LAN address.
  • Check whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding.
  • For a managed host, confirm that the server is online, the assigned address and port are correct, and the plan supports the uploaded Forge pack.

Players experience lag or memory errors

  • Watch server logs and the machine’s memory use while players explore and generate chunks.
  • Keep at least the published 6 GB baseline available to the process and leave headroom for the operating system.
  • Reduce simultaneous exploration or heavy background workloads while diagnosing the issue.
  • If the machine remains saturated, move to hardware or a hosting plan with more CPU and RAM. There is no published Horrorria player guarantee to use as a capacity target.

A horror event looks or sounds wrong

Footsteps, darkness, flickering torches, stalking behavior, and jump scares are core design elements described by the creator. Distinguish an intentional event from a technical fault by checking whether the same behavior occurs in a clean, matching instance and whether the log reports an error. Report reproducible bugs through the creator’s Discord or project comments, including the exact pack release and relevant log excerpt.

What to include in a support report

The Horrorria project directs users to contact the creator through Discord or comments and to report bugs there. A useful report is specific enough to reproduce:

  • Horrorria release, such as 3.8.
  • Minecraft and Forge versions shown by the launcher.
  • Launcher name and operating system.
  • Whether the issue occurs on a new single-player world, a self-hosted server, or a managed server.
  • Exact steps that trigger the problem.
  • The first relevant error and a short server or crash log excerpt.
  • Whether every player and the server use the same archive release.

Re-check the project files page before downgrading or upgrading. A newly published release may already contain a fix, while an unplanned downgrade can make a world incompatible.
